So here's my story:

I've been playing basketball all my life (19 years), and to say the least, I am a very solid point guard. I am confident that I can play at a D1 level (I always keep it 100 with myself, I wouldn't sell myself a dream). In high school, I was 1st team all-conference, 1st team all-area, and all-state while i was averaging 17ppg, 9 assist, and 3 steals. Last year, straight out of high school, I went to a small D2 school out of desperation and did a little bit of dirt there. I was a freshman averaging 14 and 8. At the end of the year, I decided to transfer, because I knew deep down inside that I hadn't reached my potential. This year (my sophomore year), i decided just attend a community college to keep getting my grades and to develop/polish my game. I would say I'm doing well with my development... I'm 5'10 (5'11 on a good day), 180lbs, dunking with ease, dribbling is solid, jump shot is pure. My one on one defense can use some work though, but my help-side D is very good. My problem is, my high school coach who I felt I could trust never helped me get into any colleges or universities or contacted any coaches for me and now we don't even speak. When I was his star-point guard and running his offenses for him, I was his favorite person in the world. I even went to the dudes crib for thanksgiving. Then after my senior season, I hardly ever even talked to the guy. So basically I am alone, and I wanna know if anyone has any suggestions or helpful hints on what I can do. I AM going to play next year at someone's school. Getting there is the hard part, once I get my foot in the door, the rest is easy.

What are your grades like? B/C if you got game, I know George Mason could use you.

No my grades are cool actually. I got a 3.1 gpa. the problem is getting recognition for hoop.

My problem is, my high school coach who I felt I could trust never helped me get into any colleges or universities or contacted any coaches for me and now we don't even speak.

Man I can relate to this.

The key is to market yourself. This is a no-no in college recruiting but send out a dvd or game tape. Don't send a highlight reel because it only shows part of the story. Use your last coach as a reference. And get your travel on. Go to different colleges and ask the coach if you could work out for them. If you are solid, they should give you a look. Good luck.

First off, quit acting like a bitch! So what if your coach didn't help
you get into the best programs. Or that you feel he owes it to you to
help you get anywhere. You have to take a more proactive approach and
get in contact with these D1 coaches. Since you truly believe in your
game, believe that all of the info is out there. All you have to do is
use your library card or get on the net. Make something like 10-15 dvd's
or your old school vhs highlight film videos to promote your game. Run
to walmart and pick up a yellow envelope with the bubble guts inside to
protect the vids. Mail them to the care of the Head coaches and send them
CRRR so that you know someone signed off on it. Call up the school you sent the tape to and
ask to speak to a coach who wants to pick up a top point guard in the country.
Let them know about the video and see what that coach says. There are no guarentees, but
whinning about your HS coach, who probably doesn't know how
shit truly works in D1 isn't going to help. Take it from someone who went your route with football and
balled out on a team that won 2 Conference championships.
It can be done you just got to keep it pushing and believe in yourself. peace and good luck.

Join the Army or Airforce, go all Army or all Airforce B-ball team... I've heard of people who went to d-1 schools like that. Not a recommendation, just an option. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Okay, let's keep it real. If you were any good coaches would be blowin' up your phone. That said, play AAU ball or make some of those summer camps. Take whatever free ride you get. Remember, you ain't makin' the NBA so an education is your real goal. Real talk.

again why you need to hit up a school like Mason. get on a Greyhound and show up and ask to workout, show what you got.

Man grab all your highlight films and put one tape together of your best defensive and offensive plays. Send that shit to every college under the sun and follow it up with a call. If that tape shows skill someone will scoop you. Try black colleges tuff man, they play D1 ball and mostly all HBCU's play large schools. Run your ass off and stay in shape and be ready fam, even if you gotta walk on. Fuck the haters, it's always one nigga who will tell you what you can do, just bust yo ass you will be alright fam!

Dude, I feel your pain...
- First, don't expect your HS coach to do much ELSE for you now.
- The reality is... YOU DON'T PLAY for him anymore.
- So he has to FOCUS on his CURRENT athletes. Nothing personal.
- Anything EXTRA he does at this point is considered a BONUS.

Once you can accept this.. now it's time to MAN-UP!
And maybe this can help...

1. STAY IN SHAPE / WORK ON YOUR GAME!
- Play as much as you possibly can. Continue to improve EVERY facet of your game.

2. Put together some VIDEO of yourself immediately.
- Scrape together ANY footage of yourself, or find a friend with a camcorder + some editing equipment and hit the local gym / park. (Don't know anybody? There's plenty of film students @ the local college who need a topic for their next assignment. Post up a few flyers around campus ;-)

- All you need to do is film about 5-10 minutes of yourself, doing drills, draining jumpers, dunking, shooting free throws, etc. (But OFFICIAL GAME footage works best, imo)

- Create a FREE MySpace page, or a YouTube Profile and upload the vids so you can maximize the power of the INTERNET / VIRAL VIDEO. This can be your *home base* for self-promotion.

3. Contact College Coaches DIRECTLY.
- Decide on a few schools you want to attend.
- Go to their WEBSITES and try to track down any of the Athletic Director(s) or Head Coach(s) email addresses.
- Write a short email about yourself + include your links to your videos. (But don't OVER sell your skills / brag)
GUARANTEED....THIS WILL GET YOU NOTICED!!!

Busy People (like coaches) don't have a ton of free time, but they may spend 5 minutes or so looking at video of a new prospect. Even if they don't read your e-mail personally, some Assistant might see it, take notice + pass it on.

4. Lastly, check out sites like: http://www.allnetshooting.com

- Who knows? The owner may give you some advice / contacts personally.
- Especially if you spend a few bucks on his device and/or send him an email with links to your self-promo videos.
- Get creative. (ex. Use yourself to create a "before" and "after" type-video, post it on You Tube & send it to him.)
- You might just kill 2 birds with one stone. (1) Improve your game. (2) Get referred to TOP coaches.
- Don't wanna buy a product like this? Ask yourself if $40 bucks is worth FREE TUITION. Then decide.

But WHATEVER you do... DO NOT JUST PLAY BALL ONLY.
(or continue to sulk about your situation.)

The fact that you seem determined / motivated... shows character.
Now you just need to do a few simple things to get THE RIGHT people to notice.

Best of Luck!!

Good advice dawg. Just do what you can to make the squad, and when your opportunity comes, make the best of it. GOOD LUCK and SKILL...

Yeah, With the internet every player in the country is scrutinized and there are very few players that slip through the cracks. College coaches don't give a damn about high school coaches, if they see a player they'll recruit him. I am a high school coach and I am the all-time scorer at my college so I know what I am talking about. If no one recruited you then you weren't that good. Now does that kill your dream? No. Walk on somewhere and prove to the coaches that you are as good as you think you are. GOOD LUCK

Also, I see that people are advising you to make a highlight film and show the coaches. They don't wanna see that shit! They want total game film, they want to see how you play throughout the entire game. Any player can put together clips of them making a good shot or playing one series of good "D". If it is not a total game then you are just wasting your time. As a matter of fact it is counter productive because coaches think you are hiding something when you don't send them the whole game.

easy

if you can, spend the summer in nyc

enter the rucker league and play the hardest in your life

if youre good, someone will pick you up at their school

youll be amazed at the college and professional scouts at those games

at the rucker, its the best talent in the world there

the problem with those dummies is that they cant pass a test to save their lives

CO-SIGN. FULL GAME FOOTAGE WORKS BEST.
Some college kids might not have their own camcorder / knowledge of video editing.
But EVEN WITHOUT IT... he shouldn't let that stop him. (if he's serious, that is.)

He could still put something together WITH NO MONEY AT ALL.
Especially in this day & age...

- MySpace / YouTube is FREE.
- And practically EVERYONE has a camera phone, nowadays.
- So if he can email the video clips to himself / or transfer them to a computer somehow...

Then there's really NO EXCUSE, imo.
He might get some calls within a week, or 2.

Just saying.

If you can get to NYC, just visit the 155th Street courts one afternoon and ask ANYBODY who's out there how to GET ON a squad. (But you might have to *break some ankles* b4 they give up that knowledge, tho.)

In any case, you gotta do a little leg-work ON YOUR OWN.
Get the point?

Also in NYC, try to contact:
- NYC GAUCHOS GYM. (Emanuel Richardson aka Book)
- RIVERSIDE CHURCH. (Mark Jerome)
- BOUNCEMAG (Bobbito Garcia)

You might even be better off sending vids to these AAU-type cats.
1. They got more FREE TIME than any Division 1 coach, plus I guarantee they read ALL their emails PERSONALLY.
2. They might put you on their squad, or shout you out in their mag, if you REALLY NICE, that is. You neva know.

PLUS THEY KNOW MORE D1 COACHES THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.
Now Git!!

Oh yeah, 1 last thing....

STAY DILIGENT.

*Young Ballers* (like yourself) tend to slack-off a bit too much sometimes.

EXAMPLE:
- You may workout / play ball for 6 days in any given week.
- Plus watch a TON of College / Pro Ball wit your boys.
- Fuck with some hotties / chase some ass for 2 or 3 days.
- Hit up the local malls / movie theaters / nightclubs.
- Play 2 much XBOX / Playstation.
- Surf the internet for some bullshit.

AND BY THE END OF THAT WEEK...
WHAT WILL YOU HAVE DONE TO IMPROVE YOUR SITUATION?

+ Did you find the contact info of key College / Athletic Staff?
+ Did you make any phone calls?
+ Did you send any emails?
+ Did you create that YouTube page?
+ Did you put that Video Package together?
+ Did you even *get started* on any of the above?

If you don't spend ANY time doing these simple things also...
don't cry about your HS coach.

MAN UP.

If you made all-conference and all those other all's D1 coaches DID see you.You sound like a 5'10" scoring guard whith average (solid) handles. These are a dime a dozen. Talk to D1 coaches and see if you can walk -on. At 5'10" you will need superub ball handling skills and if you can shoot the 3 consistantly you will get looked at. Play alot of pro-am if you can.

If you truly feel you can play D1 then buy some blank tapes and make copies of some of your best games and send them to teams in the NEC, MAAC or America East conferences. If you from the south send it to the MEAC or Big south teams. Also write up a little BIO about yourself with all your accomplishments. Realistically speak 14 and 8 is not nothing to stand up shout about, especially for D2. So you better kill at JC this year.
