Has this ever happened to you on Vacation in the Carribean??

Went to a pretty nice resort in St. Lucia for my honeymoon. I mean, I pulled out all the stops, Presidential Suite, All Inclusive, the whole nine. However, I noticed something perculiar about some of the individuals working at the resort.

Of course all of the workers were native to St. Lucia or surrounding, but they seemed to treat the black guests differently (not as well) as the white guests. Now, the ratio of guests at the resort was about 90% white and 10% black. But it seemed when it came to things like getting a drink at the bar we seemed to be served after any other white people at the bar. Even at a restraunt, our server would come to our table last after she served the other tables with white patrons.

The first couple of times it happened I didn't think anything, but after a while I began to wonder, are they catering to the white patrons more because they think they have more money, or because they think the black patrons don't or won't tip them? It was a pretty expensive resort, so if you were there, you had to have SOME money, but they seemed not to cater to the black patrons nearly as well.

When I went to Jamaica, it wasn't quite as bad, but I still noticed it at the resort.

Has this ever happened to any of you on vacation in the Carribean or anywhere else?

YES!!! All the time in America.... OHhh you probably mean outside the country huh.. YES!!! WE JUST NIGGAS TO THE WORLD!!!!

yep, when i went to barbados in 05,

its a shame but them small islands hav become
totally dependent on white tourism, so much so
that no one else is of any significance to them.

you fell victim to what we like to call a sterotype. It's true that at the resort you probably will have to have a large bank roll to stay there, but guaranteed that the white people that stay there have a lot more money than the blacks. It's just wrong in our eyes, but to them treating whites better is just a good economic practice.

Its Mostley A Stereo Type Of Black Americans.what They See On Tv And What Family Members Who Are Here In The States Say About Them ..that They Are Cheap And Dont Tip Well.but The Same Can Be Said For People From The Islands They Are Really Bad Tippers When They Are Here Or Have Been In The Usa A Little While.oohh But Be Clear They Are Going To Cater To White Folks But Thats Just Part Of The Waythings Are There

if u black u gotta be popular, like a movie star, singer, someone along that line to get islander's to treat u with a little more courtesy, hell they be black on black attitude's worldwide remember,we done be brainwashed from slavery,so don't let it deter u from comin' again dawg....

just came back from Couples Ocho Rios (Tower Island) and was treated like royalty.

i have NO bad experiences from Jamaica.

When you go to the Jamaica, You'll notice the same people who talk shit about black americans and other islanders will bow down to whitey with the quickness. On vacation in Montego bay I noticed some dudes walking down the street talking tough and the usual Jibba Jabba I see from Jamaicans all day in fort lauderdale. But then they actually CROSSED the street when white tourists were in their way. I call it the slave mentality and it's rampant over there. When you get a chance, Look at the Former Prime Ministers they have had as recently as 8 years ago. Either Light or straight up white, and the biggest businessman down there (Butch Stewart) is also as pale as Bill Gates. On an island that is 95% black? :smh:
And we all know how dreads love them a white woman.

I have to say it was a little different for me, but I also knew why. Me and 3 of my girlfriends went to Jamaica and took our daughters, and we couldn't get the locals away from us.

It was almost scary, not that we didn't appreciate the attention, but it was almost overwhelming. But we were told to expect.

Another time, I went to the Bahamas with a guy I use to date, and it was totally different.

Noticed that shit in Florida. Haitians wouldnt speak or anything and white people guests and workers were so fuckin friendly it bugged me out.
Its not like I havent got that same treatment in NY or NJ from black AMERICANS.

That's because us Blacks are stereotyped as bad, or non~, tippers,,, many people who work in the service industry have told me about this.

Co-Co

I sometimes find myself overtipping because:

I love good fast service
I worked many years in the service industry, so I know how that shyt feels.

I usta work Valet in vegas and used to get stiffed by black folks all the time, they be in fly whips, so it's not like they didn't have the money, they just got off on it. (we usta fuck up they cars in the back doe. lol the good ole days

I think the first Mistake we make when going to the Caribbean is staying at those fucking money hungry resorts. There are plenty of Villas & bed and breakfast houses that cater to the full experience of the Caribbean. My grandparents have been running a bed and breakfast in Salvador, Bahia for the last 25 years, and there is nothing but success stories from black, white, and asian.

I may actually do the bed and breakfast thing next time. I've heard good things about them.

Just a lil island tip.

More than likely you'll have the same house keepping lady and if its all inclusive got the same bar/barkeep and if you take taxis and the service is cool get his cell #.

Tip all of them decent every time daily for they're service and they'll fight to serve you.

Its a streotype that Black ppl dont tip well and alot of times we go to the islands and stay with family/friends while White ppl are totally dependant on them and rarely leave the resorts so they spend and tip!.

They just don't know any better until they immigrate to this country. They are still in the stage of that Massa thinking and mindset. I recently had someone from the Caribbean tell me " we are not supposed to look the white man in his eyes" hence the old slavemaster mentality. They are not exposed to the same racism or they see the whites as been special.Still that colonialism mentality.

What u experience is called colonial slave mentality. I have been a victim of that already. For a country that soley depends of tourism, as a foreinger u will get preferential treatment.

When your a black foreinger if people(locals) do not pick up on that right away, u get treated differently as oppose to the white man who automatically everyone assume has money(obviously we know that ain't the case).

The fucked part about it is that the way your treated is like night & day it's like that blatant. It almost parrellels that way blacks customers were treated as oppose to white customers by business owners(who were mostly white) in the 1960's segregated south. The only difference is that it's a different kinda beast your dealing with. It's kinda hard to describe or articulate unless you have experience that treatment yourself. But when it does happened your offended like no other, cause of the blatantness of it.

WTF!!!!!!!

man, you cannot be fucking serious about that :smh:
Damn, and they come over here, a few with that house negro bullshit too I bet, damn shame, and most of these white feel no shame of what thier ancestors did to this world and the psycological and enviromental effects that still linger

Flip to the other side of this. Are you coming into a resort like that with a chip on your shoulder? Most black people from outside the united states -- speak kindly to each other and acknowledge each other's humanity, even in a service situation. Are you looking down your nose at your Carribean brother or sister while you are looking for hidden racism? No excuse for poor service, but check yourself too...are you throwing ice yourself?

Somebody up higher also mentioned... why the hell are you staying in an over-priced white owned establishment anyway... there are plenty of black-owned places to stay that will treat you very nice.

Sorry your stay was messed up after probably trying to get a break from all that type of fuckery to still experience it in Jamaica. Probably you could try not to stay in the tourist areas too much as it is really fucked up there. Black people being stereotyped as poor tippers is NOT an excuse.

You should know (unless you are white) they talk alot of shit about white people also. Ever thought that the White/light people being in power there is a residue of colonialism. Either they inherited alot of stuff or in butch stewart's case got breaks that an average black man could not get. The same big boy club thing.

8 years ago was 1999 , Patterson was prime minister and he is BLACK not light skinned by any standard. You probably meant 18 years ago.

Dreads like white women............or is it the white women like dreads? Alot of those dreads are just trying to get some $$$$, or a chance to come to the states from those women, its strictly business to them.

You only looking on some part of it , it is not until the mid seventies that tertiary education was available(not just to the elite). I those fortunate enough , have taken advantage of it to the FULLEST. enuff said for a post.

No chip on my shoulder at all, which is why I was so surprised by the treatment. However, Mr. Rob606, if you go to Jamaica, make sure you stay in a "black-owned" hotel in the middle of Kingston. Then post your experience on the board, and make sure you have pictures. I would certainly like to hear about the experience.

I don't look for "white-owned" or "black-owned" when I go to a resort. That's like saying don't drink Pepsi, when you can drink a "black-owned" cola that tastes just as good.

I went to the Bahamas last year and I got treated very well.
I was there with a local girl, and since she was with me they assumed she was a tourist too. She thought it was interresting because she got to experience her country as a tourist and felt that people treated her better than usually.

However I did bargin with the locals :hmm: lol
I enjoyed my experience a lot however I did not stay at hotel...so I'm not sure what that would be like..
