State Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery slammed Republicans for passing a restrictive abortion bill that would ban the procedure after the detection of a fetal heartbeat.
One Alabama state lawmaker is calling out his colleagues for what he sees as racist hypocrisy, claiming that they would support abortion if their white daughters were carrying black babies.
According to the Raw Story, Democratic state Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery made the controversial accusations on Tuesday during a debate on an abortion bill that would ban the procedure after a heartbeat was detected. The bill ultimately passed in a landslide 73-29 vote.
The passing of the bill prompted its sponsor, Republican state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, to compare it to Brown v. Board of Education, offending Holmes and sparking his ire.
"Ninety-nine percent of all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion," Holmes said. "On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion. They ain’t going to let her have the baby.
"Now, listen, you know the truth sometimes hurts," he added to a silent crowd.
"She's got two other white children, and then she's going to have a little black baby, going to be running around there in the living room, in the den with the rest of them," Holmes reiterated. "They're not going to let that happen. You know that and I know that. You will never admit it. You know that and I know that."
He referenced a conversation he had with a woman a while back who was against abortion but who turned around to pressure her daughter who'd been impregnated by a black man to abort the baby.
"I said, 'You're not going to let her have that baby,' " Holmes claimed. "She said, 'Oh, no. No.' She thought I was crazy."
Holmes then took up his argument with the very sponsor, McClurkin, asking how she would feel if her daughter were pregnant by a black man. "[I would] let it run around in my living room and enjoy it as my grandchild," McClurkin said.
"Well, I need to commend you, then," Holmes said, laughing. "It wouldn't be one out of 100,000 to do that."
