The Google Pixel Fold — or Pixel Notepad, as it may ultimately be known — has been promised for a long time now. Originally expected at the tail end of 2021, it wasn’t mentioned at Google’s last event even when next year’s Pixel tablet got namechecked. Could that mean it’s even further away, or worse, never going to see the light of day?

clue from the latest Google Camera app suggests that won’t be the case. As revealed by 9to5Google (opens in new tab) in one of the site's regular app teardowns, version 8.6 contains references to a new mode codenamed “Jupiter." The icon for Jupiter is extremely revealing:

That seems to be an unfolded tablet-style foldable (like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3) with an arrow pointing from the outside to the inside.

While 9to5Google says that the purpose of Jupiter isn’t confirmed, it seems to be something to do with the unique camera layout of foldables, where — thanks to having two different screens — you have two sets of front-facing cameras. When open, one of the selfie cameras joins the rear camera round the back, and this could simply be a way of choosing which lens to use, letting you take better selfies with the higher-spec cameras.

Alternatively, it could be a way of combining all three sources for reaction videos or similar.

product, even if it was conspicuously missing from the last event. That’s what display analyst Ross Young was predicting as recently as February — although that was three months before the Fold’s no-show at Google I/O.

As for other recent Google foldable phone rumors, the potential camera hardware on the Google Pixel Fold got leaked. This leak mentions a high-res a 50MP main camera along with two 12MP sensors (that could be for the front) and an 8MP one.

What we do know for sure is that Google isn’t done with its hardware releases in 2022. When the Google Pixel 6a was announced, the search giant said that the Pixel 7 and Google Pixel Watch would be arriving this fall, and the company’s events typically take place in October. Could the Pixel Fold be an Apple-style ‘one more thing?’ We’ll have to wait and see.

Everybody knew it was on the horizon. Now the question is, will it actually come out?

Hardware development spans years into the future, so today’s leak describing the Google Pixel roadmap into 2025 is right on track. If Google sticks to it, barring disruptions, the next three years of Pixel phones reveals Google’s desire to offer a range of devices that more than mimics the iPhone in terms of variety.

Pixel in 2023
  • Pixel 7a: Lynx
  • Pixel 8 and 8 Pro: Shiba and Husky
  • Pixel Fold: Felix
  • Pixel Tablet: Tangor/Pro
We’ve reported in-depth about Google’s next mid-range phone, with pricing reportedly remaining the same, while solid foldable renders have emerged over the past few weeks. According to Android Authority, the Pixel 8 “will have a smaller display and overall smaller form factor,” while the Pixel 8 Pro remains the same.
Pixel in 2024
After next year, Google reportedly has interesting strategy changes in mind. The Pixel 8a, which is codenamed after a dog, would cost $499 as part of a $50 price increase. It’s best to think of that as a target rather than something definite, especially given how much things could shift with the landscape between now and then.
Speaking of change, the aforementioned plan for the Pixel 8a could be altered depending on how the Pixel 7a does in the market. If so, Google is reportedly switching to a two-year release cycle.
  • Pixel 8a: Akita
  • Pixel 9: No codename, curiously
  • 6.3-inch Pixel 9 Pro: Caiman
  • 6.7-inch Pixel 9 Pro: Komodo
  • Pixel foldable follow-up
That’s not the first departure modeled after Apple’s iPhone – specifically, the SE – lineup, with the Pixel 9 Pro reportedly being offered in two sizes in a return to the XL approach that ended with the Pixel 4 series. Android Authority says this three-phone lineup is “set in stone.”
Lastly, 2024 could see a “follow-up foldable,” but no other definite details are available.
Pixel in 2025
  • Smaller Pixel 10
  • Larger Pixel 10 or flip-style foldable
  • Smaller Pixel 10 Pro
  • Larger Pixel 10 Pro
  • Pixel foldable follow-up
While Google might be undecided on a follow-up to the 2023 Pixel Fold, a flip-style device, like the Galaxy Z Flip, sounds slightly more definite per this 2025 roadmap leak. That said, Google is contemplating an alternate strategy with just a smaller and larger version of the Pixel 10 to mimic the 10 Pro series. This would truly match the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus (which is apparently not selling that well), iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
With the Pixel Watch and upcoming Tablet, Google demonstrated its desire for a “Collection” of devices. These leaks, if they pan out, reveal that Google wants depth for its offerings in addition to range.

A $1700 phone better be able to suck my gun... and cook dinner.... :hmm:

KEY POINTS

  • Google is planning to launch its first foldable smartphone at upward of $1,700, making it the highest price-point product in Google’s smartphone series, according to internal documents and images viewed by CNBC.
  • The company claims the Pixel Fold, which will compete with Samsung’s phones, will have “the most durable hinge on a foldable” phone and will offer a phone trade-in option.

Google will launch its first foldable smartphone sometime in June, challenging Samsung’s market-leading foldable phone business, according to internal communications viewed by CNBC. It plans to announce the device at its annual developer conference, Google I/O, on May 10.

The Pixel Fold, known internally by the codename “Felix,” will have the “most durable hinge on a foldable” phone, according to the documents. It will cost upward of $1,700 and compete with Samsung’s $1,799 Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Google plans to market the Pixel Fold as water-resistant and pocket-sized, with an outside screen that measures 5.8 inches across, according to the documents. Photos viewed by CNBC show that the phone will open like a book to reveal a small tablet-sized 7.6-inch screen, the same size as the display on Samsung’s competitor. It weighs 10oz, slightly heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it has a larger battery that Google says will last for 24 hours, or up to 72 hours in a low power mode.

The Pixel Fold is powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chip, according to the documents. That’s the same processor that launched in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones last year.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment.

While hardware is a small fraction of Google’s revenue, the Pixel Fold is the most expensive phone in the company’s Google Pixel family. Google has been working on the software, including Android and its app store Google Play, for third-party devices made by companies like Samsung, the current folding phone market leader.

The Pixel Fold will give Google a chance to show what a fully Google-made foldable phone experience is like. Other Pixels, for example, have exclusive features that aren’t available on all Android phones, like photo editing options that are powered by the Tensor processor.

The launch comes amid questions about Google and Samsung’s relationship. Earlier this week, Alphabet shares fell more than 3.5% Monday after a Times report said Samsung is reportedly considering changing its default search engine from Google to Microsoft’s Bing for its lineup of smartphones, which drives an estimated $3 billion in annual revenue to Google.

The Alphabet-owned company will offer incentives in a bid to convince people to switch to the Pixel Fold, according to documentation. For example, Google plans to offer a trade-in option to swap in a current Pixel, iPhone or an Android-powered phone for a discount on the Pixel Fold. It also plans to offer a free Pixel Watch, the company’s latest smartwatch, to Pixel Fold buyers.

From what we've heard so far, the Pixel Fold could take the fight to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 with a shorter design that makes it easier to store in a pocket and comfier to hold. We can also expect strong cameras, a bigger battery and a Google-made Tensor chip. Add it all up, and the Pixel Fold could be a more exciting launch than the iPhone 15.

Here's what we've heard so far about the Google Pixel Fold and the search giant's foldable plans.

The Google Pixel Fold represents Google's first attempt at a foldable phone, and it looks like it will be coming soon to take on Samsung's devices for a spot on our best foldable phone list.
