Shafelia Ahmed's disappearance may have been prompted by fears of an arranged marriage, an inquest hears.

A teenage girl whose body was found next to a Cumbrian river had been scared she would be forced into an arranged marriage, an inquest has been told.

17-year-old Shafelia Ahmed disappeared in September 2003, four months after a family trip to Pakistan. While there, it is alleged she tried to harm herself when she was introduced to a potential husband.

I don't understand why in this day in age its so important to keep this tradition.

She was a pretty girl. I wonder if her parents think this was all worth it.

I remember this case being big news in the UK, after she went missing, her family didn't even bother to contact her on her mobile and also only reported her missing a week later.

Something is definately fishy on this one.
