And the hits just keep on coming …
Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who seemed to be on his way to the Pro Bowl this season, is expected to miss at least the next three weeks with an injury to his lower right leg.
According to the team, he has "Compartment Syndrome which apparently was the result of a hit in the Giants' 27-17 loss in Philadelphia on Sunday night.
Compartment Syndrome is the compression of blood vessels and nerves in an enclosed area. It can lead to bigger problems, such as muscle and nerve damage and blood flow issues, if it's not treated immediately.
Nicks was sent to the Hospital for Special Surgery Monday afternoon for a fasciotomy - - a procedure where a deep cut is made in the skin to relieve the tension and pressure in the enclosed area.
The injury is the same injury that cost former Giant Jack Brewer three games in 2004. It also cost then-Redskins defensive Jason Taylor two games in 2008.
The loss of the dynamic Nicks, of course, is a huge problem for the Giants who are already down two other receivers. Steve Smith has already missed two games with a partially torn pectoral muscle and said Monday that he'll miss this Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, too.
In fact, Smith said it's "far-fetched" to think he'll return for the Giants' Dec. 5 game against the Redksins, but he expects to return by Dec. 12 when the Giants travel to Minnesota.
The Giants are also without receiver Ramses Barden, who is on injured reserve with a broken ankle.
