George Carlin on comedy traditionally punching up, not picking on underdogs

He's 100% right and those of you constantly harping about "the PC police" and "cancel culture," if you are indeed black, are Stockholm syndrome sufferers acting as useful idiots on behalf of the alt-right.

This was on Andrew Dice Clay, the leading "shock jock"-style comedic hack of his time who made a living off of being offensive long before Joe Rogan, Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr made millions while simultaneously portraying themselves as silenced or soon-to-be silenced victims and "oppressed" white men across America turned Shane Gillis into a martyr:

"I think his core audience are young white males who are threatened by these groups. I think a lot of these guys aren't sure of their manhood... And the women who assert themselves and are competent are a threat to these men and so are immigrants in terms of jobs."

BTW, I disagree with the tweet author in that sometimes punching down can be funny. But you "just take a joke" motherfuckers lecturing as comfortably and undisturbed as Jerry Seinfeld typing from one of his mansions need to listen to what George Carlin said.

Why is it always punching up or down? If I make a gay joke...and gay people are equals...isn't that more of a straight? o_O

Being equals as people does not mean a group of people cannot be underdogs historically relative to another. Your arguments are modified lines from the white supremacy handbook-- Are you unaware of how some whites have used the existence of or advocacy for affirmative action as a way of slyly questioning black equality? Do you not see how stupid that is when applied to any marginalized group?

All comedians aren't social commentators. Carlin was...Hicks was...some comedians aren't trying to go for thought provoking comedy.

Everyone is equal when it comes to making fun. Their are people that call themselves comedians that aren't trying to be clever, and just rely on their audience being angry...Steve Crowder and that coon Terrance something with the fucked up hair line.

What comedians are "Punching Down" and what communities are being "Punched Down" upon?

I need specifics.

WTF are you talking about? Are you really comparing Andrew Dice Clay to Chapelle and Burr?

The whole "punching down" argument is bullshit. How are you punching down when these people control the media and popular culture in 2019? Please point me to the powers that be that have been publicly praising Chapelle's latest.

OP is faaaaaaar left.

Dave Chappelle punching down on white males who like dick.

Bill Burr punching down on the second biggest beneficiary of white supremacy, white women.

Chappelle's going at the media and Hollywood that’s controlled by gay people. He’s also going at specific entities in the gay community who are although a minority, are acting as bullies when it comes to what can and can’t be said specially targeting the “Cancelling” culture.

So one could argue that Dave is “Punching Up”.

The same with Burr. Burr’s speaking on a community that’s ending careers over mere accusations. Getting men blackballed just at the accusation of them doing something wrong. And when the smoke clears and the man is proven innocent and the accuser blew things out of proportion, the man can’t recover because the damage is done.

So again, in my opinion. They’re both “Punching Up” because they’re going against an entity that is more powerful than themselves.

I wasn't very old in 1990 but I don't think gays had hardly any media representation at that point. Kind of odd considering they're sooooo powerful.

Do you have anything to back up your claim? I thought the conspiracy theory was that Jews run Hollywood-- Maybe it's gay Jews?

I think Woody Allen has another new movie out, so this blacklist that women have must not be too powerful. Louis CK is coming back. Your exaggerations don't match the reality. The men you're caping for are a very small percentage of people, the idea that Bill Burr is punching up is absurd.

Unless you bring up stats or valid sources to back up your wild claims, I'm not wasting time engaging them.

You and I feel the same, I’m not wasting my time engaging with you either.

Personally, I have been going back and forth on this subject. Although, "cancel culture" can be a bit extreme at times (especially with its motto of "no forgiveness" ever). I understand why it came into being. I do agree with the OP that marginalized folks are tired of being marginalized.

However, the problem with censoring speech is that ultimately, the suppression of speech will spill into the black community two-fold. Even in the clip posted, Carlin said he believes in the right to say what you want, even though he had a problem with the jokes of a fellow comedian.

He also forms things as jokes with structure. If you get on stage and just say "fags are disgusting am I right?", that's not funny, there is no attempt to be funny. THAT IS PUNCHING DOWN.

I had a joke in my standup set about how straight orgies always have an air of nervousness and tension, but I'd guess that gay orgies were like the WWE Royal Rumble with the next guy running into the room. I tested this joke before one of the gay people in my acting class, and he was laughing at how ridiculous it was. I did the joke on stage, and a white chick comes up after and says he brother is gay and she felt i was disrespecting him. He wasn't there to offer his own opinion, but there is something about liberal white women that feel the need to be offended for the world.

LOL did u get a laugh from the crowd? Was there visible uneasiness?

Will we reach the point where you are only allowed to make jokes about yourself? Is that what anyone wants from comedy? :smh:

“Punching Down” is also going after a weaker opponent which they’re attempting to say that Dave and Bill are doing but they’re not. IMO.

Regarding the gay dudes sister approaching you after the show. You should’ve asked her, “Have you ever seen your brother enter an orgy? If not, Get the fuck out of my face”!

I know. He calls himself a socialist.

One thing's for sure, trying to censor free speech because you don't like it is similar to the actions of dictators in those socialist utopias he wants the US to become.
He's an extremist like the rest of the far left. Can't stand the extreme right or extreme left. He doesn't understand in this context that the bullied have become the bullies. They went from high school punk to the pig throwing their weight around.

The far left fucking hates free speech. They'll try to ruin someone's life over what they said 10 years ago as a freshman in high school. Comedians are on fucking eggshells these days. Anyone who denies that just isn't living in reality.

The graphic you posted with the critics showed how much pressure critics feel. They know it's career suicide to like something that the far left might go after. 'Where do they work?" It's ridiculous.

Why is it okay to joke about black stereotypes and folks can find that funny but you cant make fun of the gay community....shit makes no sense at all..

You're comparing black people joking about black people to non-gays clowning gays... you don't see the difference? It's very rare for non-black comedians to do humor about black stereotypes and if they do it better be perfectly packaged. IMO, even with black comedians, it's lame cliched comedy most of the time.

The "embrace of the middle" fallacy.

150 years ago, you'd have been praising Lincoln and condemning the abolitionists, who were the extremists. Extremism in the name of virtue and justice is no vice. Conformity to a corrupt status quo is contemptible.

But this is a digression and you love to play that one not at every opportunity. "Comedians are living on eggshells," he'll say, ignoring Chappelle and Burr's million dollar deals and Shane Gillis's martyr status. The facts don't matter, you just love to repeat your same spiel of aggrievement for some reason.

See. You're almost insane with your shit. You extremists on the lefts are just as bad as the fanatics on the right. :smh:
Positive change doesn't always have to be extreme. I'm for fucking change. I'm not for fucking extremism from either side.

Chappelle is only surviving because he is black. You hippies are just now getting comfortable shitting on straight black men. Chappelle won't be Chappelle in 10 years if cancel culture/pc nonsense isn't checked. Burr uses just enough self-depreciation to get away with shit. If Burr did Chappelle's routine, his career would be fucking over.

Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit....:smh:

These folks criticize conservatives for being bullies yet they're doing the same fucking thing...:smh:

Moderates always look bad 200 years later. People like you will be scorned for the evil you tolerate. (Not that me & my comrades will be unscathed by the judgement of history but less so than you incrementalists.)

But, back to the point, is George Carlin wrong here in your opinion? I'm seeing anti-gay conspiracy theories and fictitious cancel culture lamentations but, beyond that, not seeing the people in this thread who are pissed articulate any reason relevant to the rationale laid out in the OP.

You're in here aligning yourself with a troll droning on about "trying to censor free speech" and repeating for the 1,000th time your never-ending complaint that "the far left fucking hates free speech" when the very first words of the clip are "I would defend to the death his right to do everything he does." It's a shame some people are too simple-minded to distinguish between criticism and this hyperbole about cancellation.

Your taking what he said in 1990 about a very different type of comedian and applying it to Chapelle 30 years later.

Do think if Carlin was alive he'd be criticizing Burr and Chapelle with the rest of mainstream media? Agreeing with the modern PC police?

GTFOH.
