Gap Pulls Ad Called 'Racist,' Apologizes to Critics

Clothing retailer Gap has pulled an ad that some critics say delivers a "racist" message.

In the ad, a 12-year-old white girl from a youth performance group is leaning her arm on a black 8-year-old fellow troupe member, who also happens to be her adopted sister. Critics said the ad gives a message of "passive racism."

The campaign, launched last Friday, was made in collaboration with Ellen DeGeneres' lifestyle brand ED. As part of the campaign, Gap Inc., based in San Francisco, is donating $250,000 to the charity Girls Inc. to support its economic literacy program.

"We're partnering with Ellen Degeneres' lifestyle brand ED to encourage girls everywhere to be themselves," according to a statement on Gap's Facebook page.

Other say, gap used the same format several years ago, but the black girl was on the smaller white girl

I never try to tell other people what they should or shouldn't be offended by. We each have our own reasons for reacting to things in life. Personally I was not offended, but I can see how some people would be. Like JamesATL showed they did a similar campaign before. However I bet someone did raise the question that this could become controversial and they went ahead with it anyway. They got their campaign out and it ran for a bit and got a lot of news coverage out of it.

I LOVE being black but I aint that sensitive to bullshit.

This charge is some 'ole bullshit.

Ad aint no different than the other one with the tallest black girl centered.

I can see the subversive imaging here but...

We need to be thinking BIGGER than this.

this is exactly what it is!!

Gap doesn't have a Black person in their ad approval department, even touching Black is not a good thing. There are tons of memes on the net about Touching Black Hair, & I haven't even gotten to the submission position the black girl is in, the intent wasn't racist but the optics are.
