I've been with the company for 9 1/2 yrs....what should I do with the severance, 401k and pension from the muthafucka's. I would like to start something but I know it's not wise to use your own money and my credit is FUCKED..Any help I'd appreciate it.

"Damn Craig!! How the fuck you get fired on your day off?"

Anyway, 401k, keep your hands off of it. With the severance, pay your bills, clean up your credit and find another job.

J.O.B. Just Over Broke is all it will ever mean to me.
You can go find another one… Do another 9 or 10 years or you can look into doing your own thing. It will not happen over night so get another gig to maintain your standard of life and look into owning a business. Mind your own business and not someone else.
What did you do at Verizon? Can you see yourself doing something like that? Did you like what you were doing for them?
Just some things to think about…

Did I just see that you worked at Verizon, how the fuck did you last that long in there, what the hell were you, a CSR(customer service rep) or anything other than that, you should've atleast should've fucked with college in the mean time, but if you didn't, it's yo' ass, sorry bruh

Thanks for the advice and replies brutha's ...I worked for a number of jobs within my 9 yr tenure, most of the latest experience was in Retail Markets Consumer Sales managing Call Centers at our centralized location in Irving, Tx. Verizon overpaid for MCI/Worldcom so now them mutha fuckers trying to save some of the bread now. After the year is over they will cut as much as 20% of their workforce.

I don’t have anything against the people in India; they are only doing what I would do if I were in their shoes. However, I wonder what is going on. Who will benefit in this next movement of wealth & how will it take place?
Each time something like this happen, a shift took place and the benefit went to the ones that made the change. In the Eighties it was technology and Reagan did give notice.
Fam… Get ready for change!

Sorry to hear about getting laid off. With the exception of Government, Verizon is the last in a dying breed of companies that actually offer retirement. Large companies are looking around and saying, "No else offers retirement anymore, so why should we? Fuck'em If they want retirement, they should go and join the armed forces or be cop!"

Customer Service is career/job that is being impacted by technology and workforce issues. Companies (especially Telecom companies) can operate almost anywhere in the world. If they don't like the way Virginia is treating them ( commerical office lease rates, taxes, state wage laws, etc), they shut down and move to Iowa. If they get tired of unions, 401k's, health care, family leave act, maternity/paternity leave, excessive sick days, paying for continuing education, and etc, they can move to India.

At the end of the day, it's business! Guess who is the least important when it comes down to pleasing either Wall Street, Customers, or Employees.

I know high school educated Verizon employees that make $70k to $80k a year explaining to you why they disconnected your phone service -or- why your $35/month residential service costs $60/month after various taxes and surcharges. They get health care, dental, vision, 401k, continuting education, generous overtime, and UNION REPRESENTATION. Some customer service reps make as much as their non-union managers. It's people in India with Master's degrees that are willing to take the same job with hardly any of the benefits and less pay and no union (companies hate unions).

If you are not ready to start a business or use your experience to be a consultant/contractor, Have you considered being a outside/inside line technician for Verizon. That is one field that can't be outsourced to India. They will need people to wire this entire country with fiber optics. I hear that they have plenty of overtime (a portion of it forced overtime), but a friend does make about $90k/year. Not a bad job when you consider that many cable company techs do almost the same thing and make a 3rd of that.

Real1....what can I say..you hit the nail right on the head (are you an executive for VZ) LOL....At this point I'm not sure what my next move will be but I have been thinking about rejoining the company after my 6 month period is over and joining the FIOS (Fiber) side of the house...You are right, there is a great need for outside Techs and they are making some serious bread...Thx for dropping the knowledge about industry.

The post I have read here are true. However, GOD bless a child that has it’s own!
Go back to them if that is what you want to do Dawg… Six months… I would think about doing my own thing… Going back to the MOFO’s is like going back to an old girl… She may have changed a bit, but at the end of the day it is still the same chick!

Being laid off is a mother....Use this time to think about your next moves carefully. You've acquired 9 yrs experience..which is good particulary in this economy. Ask yourself if you want to continue along the same career path, or perhaps try something different. I'm curious...did VZ provide you with any type of outplacement package....if so use it! Call centers seek good leadership....what's the service industry like in your part of texas....I know that many t-coms are in Richarson and Dallas. PM...I may be able to point u in a few directions....no fee this one's on me!

Invest in a good financial planner, preferably an African American one, now! Do not wait for a year or five years from now. Start and IRA! Read or purchase these books: the Millionaire Next Door, Practicing Financial Planning for Professional, a book from the Harvard Book Press called The Blue Ocean Strategy, and Guns, Germs, and Steel. Accomplishing these goals and reading these books should set you on the right financial path with the proper frame of mind.

For some reason they are not laying off in Charleston, SC. In fact they are still hiring there. They just put a new building there. But then again a lot of businesses are coming to Charleston, SC.
