Yes, in Common Law countries, judges and lawyers bow when entering and leaving. If you look above where the judge is sitting, there's a crest of the monarch, and in Latin on it is "Deus et mon droit" - which means "by God and my right" which is the origin of the basis of the grant of the law to govern from the old English monarchs. They granted the right of the people to govern themselves under the monarchy - and whenever they tried to take it back, the people revolted, giving us the compromise system still in existience today. By bowing, the judge is recognising the power of the State (and therefore justice, good order and things like that) and was not bowing to the plaintiff.

That guy apparently is trying to go up against a lawyer about a law - bad idea. If he won't answer to his name, date of birth and nationality, then he's not the person the judge should be dealing with, right?
