Baseball lost one of its most colorful characters--on and off the field--to liver disease, according to his wife, Hjordis. Dock Ellis died at age 63, after fighting the problem for some time.

His career spanded three teams---Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, and the Kansas City Royals. He once pitched a no-hitter, while issuing 8- walks, and admittedly mentally influenced by LSD (1970).

The following season was his best--statistically--going 19-9, while earning an appearance in the Major League All-Star game. The game was played in Detroit, at the old Briggs Stadium in Cork Town. Unfortunately, he was the victim of the Reggie Jackson clout to right field over the light tower...the ball is probably still in flight. He was guaranteed further appearance in the annals of history.

He as traded to following season --along with Willie Randolph and Ken Brett--to the New York Yankees. He played with some good Pirate teams (Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, Dave Parker, etc.

His death occured on December 22, 2008, but was overshaded by other events that took place in the 'grand old game'. RIP Dock, you always told it like it was.:hmm:
