Samsung is starting to make a mess of things. The new Galaxy Note 10 may look stunning but it is missing crucial features and Samsung’s handling of the Galaxy Fold is truly baffling. But now there’s A New Hope.

The ever-reliable ET News has revealed Samsung is developing its second-generation folding smartphone and it looks set to right everything the Galaxy Fold got so wrong.
Unlike the Fold, which was designed to be a phone which morphs into a tablet, Samsung’s new model will be a 6.7-inch smartphone which folds along the horizontal access so it becomes an ultra-compact device when not in use. ET News says, when folded, this clamshell-style phone will also have a 1-inch display for notifications.
This format has inherent advantages because the unfolded size matches the biggest premium smartphones, like the Galaxy Note 10 and OnePlus 7 Pro, but it has the portability of a dumbphone when not in use. It also wins from a durability perspective because the screen is protected when the phone is closed and most drops happen taking your phone out or putting it away. It also means you don’t really need a case.

Furthermore, despite the Galaxy Fold’s high-profile problems, Samsung is fully committed to this next-gen model. Mass production will begin as soon as November and a commercial launch is expected to begin in early 2020.
As such, with the Galaxy Note 10 hampered by compromises (and cost), Apple making a mess of the iPhone 11 and Google’s Pixel 4 looking worryingly derivative, Samsung’s next-gen Fold suddenly looks well worth the wait.
