Foreign officials in four countries have talked in private about how they can leverage Jared Kushner’s business dealings, as well as his dearth of policy experience and financial issues, and use them to manipulate him, according to a report.
Current and former U.S. officials told the Washington Post officials in China, Israel, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates have considered how to influence Kushner, a senior White House adviser and President Trump’s son-in-law, and identify vulnerabilities.
Kushner maintains a wide portfolio of issues at the White House, including the Middle East peace process.
Though the foreign officials discussed how Kushner could be influenced, the Washington Post reported it’s unclear if the countries acted.
Some White House officials were worried Kushner was “naive and being tricked” during discussions with foreign officials. According to the Washington Post, some foreign government officials said they wanted to work exclusively with Kushner as opposed to other experienced Trump administration officials, a former White House official said.
A spokesman for Kushner’s lawyer rejected claims foreign officials sought to use Kushner’s complex business arrangements and experience to manipulate him.
“We will not respond substantively to unnamed sources peddling second-hand heresy with rank speculation that continue to leak inaccurate information,” Peter Mirijanian told the Washington Post.
Kushner reportedly has had discussions with foreign officials that were neither coordinated through the National Security Council nor reported through official channels.
National security adviser H.R. McMaster was surprised of those communications when he learned of them. During daily intelligence briefings, McMaster was told about the issue of foreign officials discussing contacts with Kushner, as well as what they perceived to be his weaknesses.
An official told the Washington Post that McMaster believed Kushner’s foreign contacts were “weird.”
“It was an unusual thing,” the official said. “I don’t know that any White House has done it this way before.”
McMaster wasn’t “concerned but wanted an explanation,” the official said.
Since learning of Kushner’s contacts with foreign officials, McMaster and Kushner have worked together to ensure the National Security Council knows about Kushner’s communications. Kushner also can engage with the National Security Council’s experts ahead of contacts with officials from foreign governments.
