21.7 million pounds of meat recalled

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP)[/B] -- The Topps Meat Co. on Saturday expanded its recall of frozen hamburger patties that may be contaminated with the E. coli bacteria and may have sickened more than a dozen people in eight states.
Topps said it was recalling 21.7 million pounds of ground beef products distributed to retail grocery stores and food service institutions throughout the United States, up from the 332,000 pounds it recalled on Tuesday.

The recall represents all Topps products with either a "sell by date" or a "best if used by date" between September 25 this year and September 25, 2008. The Elizabeth, New Jersey-based company said this information is found on a package's back panel.

All recalled products also have a USDA establishment number of EST 9748, which is located on the back panel of the package and-or in the USDA legend, the company said.

The company said consumers should destroy any recalled product and wash hands thoroughly after handling it.

Topps set up a toll-free recall help line at (888) 734-0451.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday it had suspended the grinding of raw products at the Topps plant after inspectors found inadequate safety measures there. The USDA declined to detail the inadequate safety measures.
"Because the health and safety of our consumers is our top priority, we are taking these expansive measures," said Geoffrey Livermore, Topps' operations vice president.

"We sincerely regret any inconvenience and concerns this may cause our consumers," Livermore said.

He said Topps has augmented its procedures with microbiologists and food safety experts.

The USDA said three people are confirmed to have contracted E. coli from Topps products, with 22 other cases are under investigation. Cases were found in Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

E. coli causes intestinal illness that generally clears up within a week for adults but can be deadly for the very young, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and, in extreme cases, kidney failure.

it's a good thing they didn't send that shit to Texas, otherwise i'd have to eat my 1 inch thick porterhouse with one eye open.....................

I got sick and wrote this after reading about it online:

I purchased Topps Picnic Pack 5 lb. - Quarter Pounders from Pathmark supermarket on 145 street in Harlem, New York, NY. I made double cheeseburgers on Sun, Sept 23, 2007 for my mom, 17yr old daughter, My wife and her 8yr old daughter.

We all became very ill on Monday, Sept 24, 2007. My Wife had to stay home from work Monday thru Thursday. She went to work Friday because she could not miss anymore days from work due to bills. Her daughter, Became so sick that I picked her up from school early on Wednesday, Sept 26, 2007 due to diarrhea and stomach pains. She stayed at home on Thursday, Sept 27, 2007 and was able to go to school on Friday, Sept 28, 2007 because she did not want to miss her bake sale. They are resting this weekend and are slowly recovering from the sickness.

My mom, and my daughter, decided to go to work and school and just deal with the symptoms. They are resting on the weekend as well.

I also was sick with a bad case of diarrhea and since I work for myself out of my SOHO office/apt I did not have to travel far or venture outside as much as everyone else did. I did surrender to my sickness on Friday and just lay ed around all day not feeling good at all.

I have been using your product for years and I can't believe how disruptive an outbreak of E-Coli can be. I am not sure if I want to use your product again or recommend it to family or friends due to the traumatic experience I as well as my family, girlfriend and her daughter have experienced with your product.

Please tell me what does a reputable company like yourself do to win back customer/s who have witnessed a product become unfavorable in their eyes? I believe in customer satisfaction and 99% of the time bend over backwards to insure that my customers receive the best support and or service always as well as when a mistake not on their part is made.

Here is the article where I learned of the E-Coli outbreak with your product. I then knew the reason and how we became sick.

I have inserted as well as attached pictures of the box and the printed info on the box bottom in this email.

Here is an interesting question: What does it take to win back a customer/s when quality is at stake as well as the bottom line?

Regards,
