The attorney for the woman who allegedly pulled the trigger in a deadly shooting at an Eastpointe sport goods store said the incident was a matter of self defense while she was trying to break up a brawl involving her brother.

Lakylia Sheila Taylor was arraigned Thursday in 38th District Court on two counts of second-degree homicide and other crimes. Judge Kathleen Galen set bond at $2.5 million cash/surety only.

Taylor, 19, of Detroit, is accused in the shooting that killed two people. Earlier this week, her brother Dejuan Jermain Taylor was also charged for his alleged role in the incident.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido called the shooting a “senseless act of violence.”

“Young lives are lost and ruined forever from this conduct,” he said in a news release. “Self-defense of yourself and/or others is allowed, but street justice is never permissible.”
Dejuan Taylor

Randall Upshaw, the defense attorney for Lakylia Taylor, said the young woman was fearful her brother was going to be shot in the attack.

“How can the Macomb County prosecutor reward the person that started the fight and apparently was going to kill Lakylia’s brother,” he said in an interview with the Macomb Daily. “I can’t understand what society has come to.”

The incident took place about 2:50 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of a Foot Locker store on East Eight Mile and Kelly roads.

According to police and prosecutors, the siblings had just pulled into the parking lot when they saw a vehicle occupied by a group of individuals. The two sides knew each other, police said.

As Dejuan Taylor got out of his vehicle and began walking toward the parked Jeep Compass, one of the men — identified as Tyjaune Pierre Morris-Turner — exited the vehicle with a gun at his side, police said.

According to investigators, the two men began to argue and fight. Lakylia Taylor later told police that she ran back to her car to obtain her gun to defend her brother. The weapon was unregistered, prosecutors said.

In the confusion, Lakylia Taylor accidentally shot her brother, officials said.

Police say Dejuan Taylor then grabbed Morris-Turner’s gun and some magazines on the ground, and fled the scene with sister and teenage cousins in her vehicle.

Lakylia Taylor’s attorney said she had taken her teenage cousins shopping for shoes last week when the violence broke out. He said he’s not sure what the initial argument stemmed from.
