Floyd Mayweather: Top Rank Protected Cotto From Me

Floyd Mayweather Jr. lashed out at the suggestion that he ducked a fight with Miguel Cotto in 2005, when both of them were rising junior welterweights under Top Rank's promotional banner. According to Mayweather, he requested a fight with Cotto in 2005, and then Top Rank responded by matching him with a "test opponent" to get a better idea on how a Cotto fight would potentially play out in the ring. The opponent, Henry Bruseles, was dominated and stopped in eight rounds.

"We asked for the fight. They said we'll use Bruseles [as a test]. Go back and look, he had the same identical style, came from the same stable. They said 'this is a tester, let us see how the fight would play out.' They did [the Bruseles fight] and said 'no that's not going to happen' [to a Cotto fight]," Mayweather said.

Mayweather's adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, chimed in, claiming Top Rank President Todd duBoef was always against the fight. - "[Cotto] was always Todd's own personal pet project. Coming up through the ranks, they would never, never put Cotto anywhere near Floyd.

bishop..not true...false lol...mayweather is on record saying cotto not yet..gotta prove himself etc etc

He is complaining about what top rank did protecting Cotto just like they did him. That's funny and that is pbf. Cause ever fight pbf had with top rank. Pbf was an underdog.

Show the record you speak of.

back then he was trying to get where he is now,why do you think a cocky mofokr like him would be ducking.

He has beaten everybody they put in front of him 41 times.

He has beaten some before they man Pac and Pac has been beaten but yet he was the fighter of the decade ?

Why is Pac fighting either fighters under Arum or fighters after Mayweather beats them ?

I just don't see the reason for lying .

Also why did he leave top rank on bad terms ? maybe Arum wasn't doing him right

It's the promotion game in boxing. Promoters have many fighters in and around the same weight class, and Top Rank has loads of the better fighters. The last thing they would do with a young, popular, rising star like Cotto was in '05, is put him up against an established superstar champion while still in his prime (Floyd). They invest in the fighters they believe will give them the return they seek. Why jeopardize that on a long shot? Especially one featuring a challenger/champ they control?

He left because Arum wanted to market him as "Ray Leonard II" and he wanted to market to the "urban market", something Arum was against (but took credit when it was successful).
The Cotto story is actually old, with the only thing new being the Bruseles part.

Makes sense..that's why the big name fighters should break the fuck out and do what May did..control your own career. But Floyd didn't want to go the Leonard route cause that wasn't him. Floyd knew one thing - whats more profitable than white hate and racism? Just sit back and play the I am the shit - black man role while counting millions. These folks hate floyd more than wall street...Floyd burning 100s in the club got damn near more hate than investment banks giving million dollar bonuses with tax payer money...I'm telling you, a black dude flaunting money with no boss is foreign in any sport...where he doesn't have to worry about losing endorsements for speaking his mind? Unheard of - he needs to get hurt/beaten up/a loss.

I was watching a youtube clip after a Floyd fight where Stewart wanted Floyd to fight Sharmba Mitchell cause he was fast and a great fighter at 140lbs..what happened - Floyd Ko'd him and no one said a damn thing. Just that he was anotha over matched fighter.

This is real simple - floyd fights fighter - three years later - don't look at the record just call him overmatched.

Pac fights fighter - don't look at the fighter - just the record - call it a signature win. This didn't happen in the 60s - we all remember these fights and when fighter fought them.

Are you talking about the Sharmba mitchell that had just lost to Kostya in the 3rd round (after being beaten like he stole something) two fights before that or the one that hadn't lost to him twice?

But doesn't Floyd market himself to the "urban market" with the whole Money Mayweather persona?
