Two US Republican lawmakers want to know if popular American pop star Beyonce and her husband, rap singer Jay-Z, had the US government’s permission to travel to Cuba despite an economic embargo.

Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida on Friday sent a letter to Adam Szubin, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the US Treasury Department, requesting information on the type of license Beyonce and Jay-Z received before traveling to Cuba.

“As you know, US law expressly prohibits the licensing of financial transactions for ‘tourist activities’ in Cuba,” the pair wrote.

The lawmakers went on to say that these restrictions were in place because the Cuban government was listed by the US State Department as one of four state sponsors of terrorism and has “one of the world’s most egregious” human rights records.

“Cuba’s tourism industry is wholly state-controlled; therefore, US dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people,” Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart wrote.

Beyonce and Jay-Z created a stir Thursday as they toured the streets of Old Havana, with hundreds of Cubans turning out to catch a glimpse of the US pop power couple.

Celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary, they visited historical landmarks in the heart of Old Havana, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. They snapped pictures and spoke with local residents.

Beyonce — who sang the US national anthem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration in January and performed in the Super Bowl half-time show in February — was wearing a short mustard yellow dress with black and white accents.

After visiting the cathedral, the couple had lunch in a nearby restaurant.

On Wednesday night, they also had dinner at La Guarida, one of Havana’s most exclusive restaurants.

Americans are not allowed to visit Cuba and spend money there unless they have special US government permission.

According to regulations posted on the Treasury Department’s website, “unless authorized by a general or specific license, any person subject to US jurisdiction who engages in any Cuba travel-related transaction violates the regulations and may be subject to penalties.”

Criminal penalties for violating the regulations could result in up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in individual fines.

Thousands of Americans nevertheless visit Cuba every year without US permission, often via third countries. They are rarely prosecuted back home unless they flaunt their defiance of the rules.

Beyonce is a strong and vocal supporter of Obama and helped raise money for his 2012 re-election campaign.

In their letter, the Republican lawmakers noted that numerous press reports described the couple’s trip as tourism and that the Cuban government had touted it as such in its propaganda.

“The restrictions on tourism travel are common-sense measures meant to prevent US dollars from supporting a murderous regime that opposes US security interests at every turn and which ruthlessly suppresses the most basic liberties of speech, assembly, and belief,” argued Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart, both Cuban-Americans. “We support the Cuban people by refusing to sustain their jailers.”

Beyonce and Jay-Z were not the only US celebrities to visit Cuba in recent years — actors Sean Penn and Bill Murray did so in 2009.

Fucking hypocritical RepubliKlan trolls. I can exit the door of my apartment building with nothing but my passport & my wallet, hail a yellow cab which will take me to JFK airport. At the airport using my credit card I can buy a round trip ticket to Communist China. When I land in Shanghai Communist China I can stop at the GAP and purchase some casual clothes, I can then stop by RALPH LAUREN and pick up a couple of off-the-rack purple label suits, I can stop by COACH and purchase some luggage. I then book a room at the MARRIOTT or HILTON. I then make a steak dinner reservation at MORTONS. All of the above was done using my AMERICAN EXPRESS card. Meanwhile I'm not supposed to go to Cuba. Communist China extracts body organs like kidneys and livers from prisoners condemned to death and sells them. Communist China imprisons hundreds of thousands of citizens who just want the right to possibly vote for their leaders. So much for "human rights".

But, but, what about placating all those Cuban votes in Florida

But, but, what about placating all those Cuban votes in Florida

This has to do with the image the white, anti Castro Cuban ex-patriots want to maintain of Cuba.

Any image that Cuba, under the current political control is positive toward American Black popular culture will not be tolerated.

What the capitalistic, republicans don't want is any sympathy about the Cuban socialist cause. They are afraid of the possible positive propaganda that this will generate, directed toward American young Black folk, Afro Centric Latins and you people in general.

The republicans recognize they having a difficult time attracts minorities toward their causes. They do not want any attention brought to and solidarity to develop between those young Black folks that have little if any political awareness or those that can only relate to political events unless it is in the context of the hypnotic celebrity culture.

This is facist thought control.

Marco Rubio: Explain Beyonce and Jay-Z's Cuba trip

beyonce_cuba_ap_400_605.jpg

Sen. Marco Rubio says the Cuban government used celebrity couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s recent trip to the country for “propaganda purposes,” and the Florida Republican wants answers from the White House.

“According to recent news reports, Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s Cuba trip, which the regime seized on for propaganda purposes, was fully licensed by the Treasury Department,” Rubio said in a public statement on Monday. “If true, the Obama administration should explain exactly how trips like these comply with U.S. law and regulations governing travel to Cuba and it should disclose how many more of these trips they have licensed.”

Reuters reported Monday that the Treasury Department licensed the trip.

Rubio said that U.S. law bans American tourism to Cuba because it helps fund a “cruel, repressive and murderous regime.”

“U.S. law clearly bans tourism to Cuba by American citizens because it provides money to a cruel, repressive and murderous regime,” Rubio said in the statement. “Since their inception, the Obama administration’s ‘people to people’ cultural exchange programs have been abused by tourists who have no interest in the Cuban people’s freedom and either don’t realize or don’t care that they’re essentially funding the regime’s systematic trampling of people’s human rights.”

Rubio is not the first lawmaker to question the trip. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) sent a letter on Friday to the Treasury Department, wanting more information about the vacation, which coincided with the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary.

Reuters reported Monday that the Treasury Department licensed the trip.

“We write to express concern and to request information regarding the highly publicized trip by U.S. musicians Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Beyoncé) and Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) to Cuba,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter.

The United Nations has consistently voted like 180 to 2 for ending the embargo. The United States tried to embargo Haiti when they fought to end slavery. This country supports much worse people when they are fighting against communists such as death squads.

I also like how they timed the visit near Martin Luther King assassination date, I don't know if that was his intent. I believe he was killed for his beyond Vietnam speech, rather than a lone gunman. The beyond Vietnam speech may have had implications for fighting communism. MLK popularity plummeted after giving the speech and became a pariah if you can believe that in the black and white community. Maybe I should visit a communist country on April 4 every year in defiance of these elusive people seeking to gain more power.

He gave the speech exactly one year prior to his assassination.

FLASHBACK: When Fox News Thought It Was The Perfect Time To Visit Cuba

Fox News is blasting Beyoncé and Jay-Z for traveling to Cuba in light of U.S. sanctions against the country -- but the network previously published articles with advice and tips on traveling to Cuba.

Under current sanctions against Cuba, an American citizen can obtain a "people-to-people" license from the Treasury Department -- which requires visitors to take tours that are strictly educational -- in order to travel to the country. Last week, singers Jay-Z and Beyoncé spent their anniversary in Havana, Cuba, after reportedly gaining such authorization, according to Reuters.

This visit drew the ire of Fox & Friends -- co-host Gretchen Carlson said, "[T]he trip appears to be just a vacation going against a 51-year travel embargo. So what is Hollywood's obsession with Havana?" Co-host Steve Doocy wondered, "Why would they spend money in a place where Cubans are being beaten and arrested for disagreeing with the Castros and the government?"

The Five co-hosts also criticized the couple for traveling to Cuba -- co-host Dana Perino asked, "Whose idea was this initially?" while co-host Bob Beckel said the two were traveling to "a racist country" and concluded, "I don't get it."

But a few years ago, Fox's website detailed "a few points to keep in mind if you're considering traveling to Cuba legally." In an article reporting on President Obama's reinstating the "people-to-people" exchange, FoxNews.com laid out helpful hints to readers on how to take advantage of the program, concluding, "there's no better time to book a trip."

In 2012, after Obama strengthened the requirements necessary to obtain the "people-to-people" license, Fox News Latino advised readers on how to plan their Cuba trip:

Jay-Z Mocks Republicans’ Fury Over Cuba Trip In New Track

Jay-Z, international rap star and husband to pop diva Beyonce, took out his frustration against Republicans’ attacks on him and his wife Thursday in a new rap track, mocking their anger over their recent trip to Cuba.

Florida Republicans, including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), have been attacking both the celebrity couple and the Obama administration for almost a week now, claiming that the trip may have violated U.S. sanctions against Cuba. The new track — titled “Open Letter” — extensively references and mocks those attacks as well as highlighting their ties to the Obama administration:
“I done turned Havana into Atlanta,” Jay-Z raps in “Open Letter,” which he released Thursday. “[…] Boy from the hood, I got White House clearance… Politicians never did s—- for me except lie to me, distort history… They wanna give me jail time and a fine. Fine, let me commit a real crime.
Listen to the track here:

As Jay-Z noted, the two actually did not commit a crime in visiting Havana. Instead, their trip was approved under a “people-to-people” license from the U.S. Treasury Department, which handles policy related to the Cuba embargo. Under the terms of the license, Jay-Z and Beyonce stuck strictly to an approved schedule, forgoing normal tourist behavior in favor of walking tours of Cuban architecture. The entire “scandal” simply highlights the ridiculous nature of the fifty-year old broken policy the United States has towards Cuba.
