Florida finally announces ‘stay at home’ coronavirus order

After weeks of refusal, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finally issued a 30-day “stay at home” order to his residents in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus.
“I’m going to be doing an executive order today, ordering all Floridians to limit movements and personal interactions outside the home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities,” DeSantis announced Wednesday.
The order goes into effect Thursday night.
DeSantis had faced widespread criticism for refusing to take action, even as coronavirus spread rapidly through Florida. Instead, he left the decision up to individual cities and counties.
“At this point, even though there are a lot of places in Florida that have very low infection rates, it makes a lot of sense to make this move now," he said.

DeSantis also said he conferred with President Trump before issuing the order.
As of noon Wednesday, 6,694 Florida residents have tested positive for coronavirus, as well as 261 non-residents, according to the state Department of Health.
Eighty-seven people have died so far.
