Die Hard. First Blood was very underrated though.

If they had kept the ORIGINAL ending...

First Blood’ Turns 30: Rambo’s original dark end

Thirty years ago Monday, "First Blood" hit movie screens, introducing audiences to John Rambo, the embattled Vietnam veteran played on screen by Sylvester Stallone. The movie was an enormous hit, earning $125 million worldwide on just a $14 million budget. The violent, R-rated action thriller spawned three sequels, video games, and, improbably, an animated series for kids. And it established Stallone as a major Hollywood star outside of his "Rocky" series. But none of that might have happened if they had stuck with the original ending for the movie where Rambo didn't survive.

In the theatrical version, Rambo is cornered in a police station. He has his gun aimed at Teasle (Brian Dennehy), the sheriff who pushed Rambo to lash out in violence. But then his old commanding officer Trautman (Richard Crenna) orders him to stop. Rambo breaks down, telling Trautman how Vietnam scarred him and that he can't find a place in the civilian world. Then he gives himself up, and the film ends with him being taken away by the police.

That ending was changed after test audiences rejected the much darker original ending. The first scripted and filmed ending saw the trapped Rambo pleading with Trautman to kill him. Rambo says, "I can't spend the rest of my life in a cell. If I've got to die, I want you to do it." Trautman flinches, but Rambo insists: "You trained me. You made me. You kill me. You owe me that." Rambo places a pistol in Trautman's hand. He tries to aim away, but Rambo pulls the gun towards him and it goes off. It ends with Trautman walking away as Rambo dies alone. You can see the original ending in the deleted scenes in the "Rambo - The Complete Collection" DVD and Blu-ray set.

The ending where Rambo survived was actually Stallone's idea. He had co-written the screenplay, and in the middle of shooting felt that audiences might feel too sympathetic to Rambo to want to see him die. He insisted that they film both versions during production, and when the audience at a test screening objected to the death scene, the other ending was switched in.

Just getting "First Blood" to the screen was a challenge unto itself. It took more than a decade to adapt David Morrell's 1972 novel into a movie. Many huge stars were considered for the lead role of John Rambo, including Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, and Clint Eastwood. Kirk Douglas was originally cast as Trautman, and he told Movieline that is was his idea for the character to kill Rambo at the end. But he dropped out and was replaced by Crenna at the last moment.

"First Blood" gave Stallone his second blockbuster hit of 1982, coming only five months after the enormous success of "Rocky III." But it helped establish him as a true action star, not just a guy in boxing trunks. Stallone followed "First Blood" with two even more successful sequels in the '80s, then returned to the character after a 20 year break with 2008's "Rambo."

Stallone had originally stated that he might be up for a fifth film, but in 2010 he told Empire Magazine, "I think Rambo's pretty well done. I don't think there'll be any more. I'm about 99 per cent sure." That doesn't mean he's packed up his guns, though. His last film, "The Expendables 2," made $290 million worldwide this past summer, and there's already talk about a third.

And who knows? They couldn't kill Rambo thirty years ago, so you should never count him out.

Die Hard, but it shouldn't be in this, even though it was only made a few years later it was already a different period in movie making, it borrowed and used lessons learned from later Stallone and Schwartznegger films and took it up to a new level...
Shit, just look at it -Rambo, and a shit load of Ahnold movies were made between First Blood and Die Hard

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

I'm torn right now. I absolutely love First Blood and I might be inclined to go with it, but a staple for that era of action movies was coming up with a bad ass villain and Die Hard definitely has the best villain out of these 3 choices.

Fuck it, I can't choose.

I liked all three a lot but if I had to choose one it would be Terminator. Watching that as a kid I was hype.

Damn, that's like choosing between Sydnee Capri, Michelle Tucker and Candice Jackson.

On further review, Terminator, for these reasons my dad served in Vietnam and I don't like First Blood's suggestion that they're all crazy. I watched Die Hard on Monday and was just swept away by the expanse of it all "you're not a terrorist, you're a common thief". But, like ViCiouS said, it came well after the other two.

Die Hard & Terminator are two of my all time favorites.
but I think Terminator is the superior film

This is what I call tough choices! Shit, they don't make action movies like they use too.

But for me

1) Rambo
2) Terminator (This movies scared the hell out of me)
3) Die Hard

I hear your Die Hard argument...

but to be fair it had to added because of the generation and influence IT had on subsequent action films.

EACH had a MUCH deeper storyline then they were given credit for at the time.

I think Die Hard maybe my favorite, But Rambo "one man army" motif was incredible, when he stitched his own arm shut:eek:. Dude would be labeled an urbanterroist now, taking out cops!

Point Blank the Terminator revolutionized sci-fi action.

Oh John McClane could kick all they asses just saying:D

Terminator still the shit...Die Hard CLOSE second...Rambo always put me to sleep as a kid, never did finish watching that shit lol

Rambo is the better film because sly is an actual actor (people forget that at times). Terminator has the better legacy (part two is a top ten film). Die hard is the better action film .

Oh that's really going mess with my head
Ok, under those guidelines, I would roll with Terminator. It's the only one that I can still clearly remember the first time I saw it
(late night watching it with Pops on VHS) and it definitely left the biggest impression. When I was a child, I didn't even think of the first Terminator as a action flick. I thought it was a horror movie. Terminator scared the shit outta of me when I was a kid

I remembering having nightmares that Arnold was going roll up on me out of nowhere.:lol:

Nice poll.

Love action flicks. Along with comedy it's my favorite genre. I can watch the classics repeatedly over and over.

Gotta give it to Terminator. It's one of my top 3 fav action flicks of all time.

They were showing it on cable awhile back almost daily or at least once a week. I could watch that movie every single day. I pretty much have all the lines and scenes memorized.

Die Hard is great too but cannot touch Terminator IMO. First Blood was good too. The best in that series.

terminator

rambo

die hard

This.
Arnold was all business in the first Terminator. Spoke all of 10 words the whole movie. Let his clips to all the talking.

Colonel Troutman had some memorable lines sonning those hillbilly cops in their tent. Great revenge movie. The most realistic of the three movies. I think it was based on true events.

McClain running around without shoes killing terrorists was a little far fetched but great action and pace.
