You're right, but this is basically to break you in and to help you recognize what to do in certain situations. When we trained in the training tower we had they basically put us in a room full of wood and tires with our gear on and lit it on fire so that we could feel the intense heat as we put it out
Again, this is only to basically break you in, but eventually they will train you in "the real deal" situations... East Meadow is a volunteer fire department without a lot of loot and the sheer volume of firefighters in New York's training acadamy makes space very limited unless you're training for full time paid firefighters.... this type of setup helps with the basics while drastically cutting costs
