Fiber Optic Cables from Verizon going to Military Bases to Spy

For years Americans' right to privacy, as granted by the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, has come under threat as the country's surveillance systems have grown.

After intelligence leaks by former National Security Agency employee Edward Snowden, however, the NSA's domestic dragnet is finally getting the attention that many people feel it deserves.

Over the weekend James Risen and Eric Lichtblau of The New York Times — who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2005 for this story on the NSA gaining the cooperation of U.S. telecommunications companies to obtain backdoor access to customer data — mentioned a detail from 2007 (emphasis ours):

In Virginia, a telecommunications consultant reported, Verizon had set up a dedicated fiber-optic line running from New Jersey to Quantico, Va., home to a large military base, allowing government officials to gain access to all communications flowing through the carrier’s operations center.

We recently wrote about a 2006 report by James Bamford of Wired —who wrote a book on the nation's premier covert intelligence gathering organization — which detailed how the NSA hired two companies with ties to Israeli intelligence to bug the communications of AT&T.

The news about the Verizon-NSA fiber optic connection came from a class action lawsuit brought by a former AT&T engineer who worked on a proposal to give the the NSA access to all the global phone and email traffic that ran through an AT&T network center in Bedminster, N.J.

The Israeli hardware, which can record data that comes through an internet protocol network, was discovered by a former AT&T engineer named Mark Klein and confirmed by former NSA senior executive Thomas Drake.

Another former NSA employee named William Binney, who, like Snowden, believes the NSA's surveillance has gone too far, says that ever since 9/11 the NSA has been hoarding electronic data — phone calls, GPS information, emails, social media, banking and travel records, entire government databases — and analyzes, in real time, "all of the attributes that any individual has" in addition to making networks of connections between individuals.

Binney, one of the best mathematicians and code breakers in NSA history, quit after 32 years in late 2001 because, in his view, he "could not stay after the NSA began purposefully violating the Constitution."

The Posse Comitatus Act is the United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) that was passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction and was updated in 1981. Its intent (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) was to limit the powers of Federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce the State laws.

Since the NSA is doing domestic surveillance, and it is located, under the direction, and control of the military, that is a big problem. The military is enforcing State Laws, they are working hand and glove with the FBI. This type of program should have been under DHS; however, the government is playing legal games to hide it under the NSA. All personnel involved should face criminal prosecution and incarceration, they should be fleeing the country, not Snowden. Politicians like President Obama use the classification of this program, they know it would costs them in an election. I would have voted for somebody else if I knew he supported this type of bullshit.

Congress needs to stop being 'briefed', and not being allowed to bring something. They need to shut this monstrosity down.

Wikipedia:

The National Security Agency (NSA) is a cryptologic intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the collection and analysis of foreign communications and foreign signals intelligence, as well as protecting U.S. government communications and information systems,[2] which involves information security and cryptanalysis/cryptography.

The FBI tried, plus it was a political risk for a politician to openly support this type of program. Now they, moved it to a military base, classified it, put it under military control, and say it is being used to go after terrorists.

If it was under DHS or the FBI, the information collected could be FOIA.

I think they should change the name from national security

to national overseer agency..

crazy how they are running wild with OUR money...

we still should stop giving them our money untill they get their act together...

fire them, cia and fbi, when was the last time they found a missing person or actually solved any fuckin thing??

Snowden parents better get with the ACLU and file a don't kill my son lawsuit.

My sources are telling me that President Obama is getting legal justification from the Justice Department. They are portraying Snowden as an Al-Qaeda sympathizer/member. They are sending doctored pictures of him to the media with a beard, reading the Koran, with his skin color darkened.

That is enough due process for him, a legal memo and giving the command to the military to drone strike.
