Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for at least the 2022 season after gambling on games in 2021.

The NFL released a statement Monday announcing his suspension, saying he gambled on games over a five-day stretch in November 2021 when he was on the non-football injury list to address his mental health.

Ridley stepped away from football on Halloween, saying he needed to get his personal life in order.

In a series of tweets Monday after the suspension was announced, Ridley said he bet $1,500 total and that "I don't have a gambling problem." He also tweeted that he couldn't even watch football at the time he made the bets. He added that he's just going to "be more healthy when I come back" and that, "I know I was wrong But I'm getting 1 year lol."

The NFL determined that Ridley placed multilegged parlay bets involving three, five and eight games that included the Falcons to win via his mobile device out of state, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The NFL learned of Ridley's betting activity through its relationships within the legal sports betting industry, a source told ESPN's David Purdum.

"There is nothing more fundamental to the NFL's success -- and to the reputation of everyone associated with our league -- than upholding the integrity of the game," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to Ridley notifying him of his suspension. "This is the responsibility of every player, coach, owner, game official, and anyone else employed in the league. Your actions put the integrity of the game at risk, threatened to damage public confidence in professional football, and potentially undermined the reputations of your fellow players throughout the NFL.

"For decades, gambling on NFL games has been considered among the most significant violations of league policy warranting the most substantial sanction. In your case, I acknowledge and commend you for your promptly reporting for an interview, and for admitting your actions."
The NFL said its investigation uncovered no evidence that Ridley used inside information or "that any game was compromised in any way." There also was no evidence that any of the Falcons' coaches, staff or players were aware of his betting activity.

The earliest Ridley can apply for reinstatement is Feb. 15, 2023, the NFL said.

He also can appeal the suspension by filing notice within three days, per the collective bargaining agreement. It is not known if he has appealed the punishment.

Multiple NFL teams reached out to the Falcons in recent weeks to inquire about trading for Ridley, and each time, Atlanta declined to enter into talks out of good faith, knowing the issues in store for their standout wide receiver, sources told Schefter.

The Falcons said they are preparing for the 2022 season as if Ridley will not be with them.
"We were first made aware of the league's investigation on Feb. 9. We have cooperated fully with the investigation since receiving notice and support the league's findings and actions," the team said in a statement. "We are moving forward in the 2022 season with the decision that was made. With the decision that was made by the NFL, any further questions on the investigation should be directed to the league office."

Ridley is the second player to be suspended for betting on NFL games since 2018, when a ruling from the United States Supreme Court opened a path for all states to authorize sports betting. Then-Arizona Cardinals defensive back Josh Shaw was suspended in 2019 after the NFL learned he had bet on league games while on injured reserve.

Since the Supreme Court ruling, 30 states and the District of Columbia have launched legal sports betting markets.

With Ridley now unavailable, Atlanta has one receiver from the 53-man roster last season under contract -- rookie Frank Darby.

Ridley's contract will toll until 2023 and come off the books for 2022, opening up $11.1 million in salary-cap room for the Falcons.

He's done in this league
I don’t think so, still talented but has cost himself a ton of cash, between the understandable mental health struggle, and the flagrant violation of the rules with gambling. He got narced on by the casino, dummy you have someone else who DOESNT PLAY IN THE NFL place your bets for you. This dude did it via his phone. :smh:

Bet he didn't see this coming...

Wtf?!?

These leagues better what out with legalized betting...

Stuff like this and tanking games may destroy a sport

Word. I have no idea how big or small a problem it may be for Ridley personally... But I know most big time gambling addicts have NO self control. As in they'll bet in any arena where they think they have an edge to get that "hit".

Everyone has at least one boy like that too: addicted to easy money. And lots of times it ain't even about the money, it's more about the thrill of /or being "right". Same thing with lots of stock traders.

...so long story long I agree with you just for the simple fact that the real hard-core bettors ain't gonna have the self-discipline to keep themselves from making bets on a sure thing if they think they have inside knowledge (as you would if you played the sport you are betting on)..

He deserves too more years for this tweet alone. Straight up dummy.
Not really. He saw it as, "I bet $1,500. I don't have a gambling problem I just I saw a bet and figured I would take it. I didn't know I'd get a year for it"

I felt something similar when I got caught growing weed in my backyard. I had no idea I was looking at a motherfuking felony. I was just bored and looking for some shit to do and it was just weed. It's damned near legal now.

The law saw it differently. Luckily, I didn't get jail time

He'll be back in 2023. The NFL is more concerned with their image as opposed to allowing players "due process." Although, they have a rule against NFL players betting on games, Calvin Ridley was not playing during that time period and therefore could have no influence on any Atlanta Falcons games.

He may not have a problem, hell I have a few of the apps & have probably bet on sports 5 times over the course of years. And even then it's been well under $500. He may have just thought hell I'm not playing & I'm better for them to win, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Your line about just bored and looking for some shit to do seems to apply here.

Hey dumbass, him having a "gambling problem" aint the issue. Him being an idiot is and betting on NFL games is... Not to mention being stupid enough to comment on it on twitter. Its a rule violation that goes against the very integrity of the game and is viewed as the worst sports related violation an athlete can make. Add that its done in an environment when the sport is opening up to gambling and therefore needs to be especially careful with assuring fans of competitive balance and fairness, and its even more dumb.

I def feel you. And I'm not one to trip over the "sanctity of the sport" anyway like some folks that run the leagues. Just like @playahaitian kind of referred to: once you open that door these things are going to happen.

I guess all I can say is that I wish he would have been extra careful about it because you know the NFL (ESPECIALLY) hands down some of the most subjective punishments known to man.

Hey dumbass, by the time he made a comment on it he had already been suspended. Fuck the NFL and their double standard bulshit

You trying to tell me the NFL ain't fixed? "Assuring fans of competitive balance and fairness"?

You can point out a half a dozen plays on a weekly basis that proves the NFL is just as fixed as many of us have always believed.

Times when the referees swallow the whistle on an obvious violation

Times when there was no penalty until Tom Brady started whining to the referee (they wanted the Rams to win this year so Tom Bradys busted lip didn't matter this year and didn't draw a flag for the first time in recent memory

Well hopefully he reads this bullshit and feels better about losing $11 million that he will never get back.

If you are risking a million dollar job to make a bet, you have a gambling problem.

I had a buddy who was on felony probation and would not stop smoking weed....he told the judge he didn't think he had a problem because it was just weed. The judge said it isn't about weed, but about the fact that violating your probation will get you sent to prison.....and if that is not enough for you to not smoke weed, then you have a problem.

Sometimes it is not the thing that makes it a problem, but what one is will to risk to do the thing that indicates it is a problem.
