ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan Under Fire For Saying Kyrie Irving Is An NBA Owner’s ‘Property’ Because They Pay Him Millions

Kyrie Irving’s mysterious absence from the Brooklyn Nets has been a hot topic of conversation in NBA circles but Jackie MacMullan’s take on the situation may have gone too far.

Earlier this week it was reported that Kyrie had decided to take some time off because he was upset over “everything that is going in this country’ following the US Capitol riot.

While talking about the Irving situation on Ryen Russillo’s podcast, MacMullan told a story about the time she once got into an argument with Kyrie about the NBA draft. During the argument, Kyrie told her that players should go to whichever team they wanted because “we’re not someone’s property” to which he responded by saying “yeah, you are dude that’s the way it works, that’s why you get paid millions of dollars.”

MacMullan’s comments didn’t sit too well with NBA fans who felt she was being racially insensitive.

thats the problem with this country everyone is so stupid about what people say,he is the property of the Nets the same way Joe Harris is. this political correctness in words and speech is sickening

She's not wrong per se, but it's definitely not a good look to say that especially with the current events going on in this country.

It's really bad optics considering she's white and Kyrie is black.

Somebody needs to tell Miss Anne she is definitely wrong. Irving is an employee not property. The word property connotes "ownership" and the notion that white people can rightfully own black people ended with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. :hmm:

They own his nba rights. He can't suit up for the Lakers or the Knicks just cuz he wants too.

Like I said it wasn't a good look for her to say that, but kyrie like all the other NBA players, their rights are owned by the league.

yeah poor choice of words on her part. Employee and property are NOT the same thing.

Their rights? You sure about that? You need to be more specific.

Kyrie cant decide to play for any other team in the NBA other than the Nets. They (the nets) own his rights to play in the NBA for that team.

It's the same in any professional sports league.

Sign the contract, you play for your team.

Their rights, not them. Bitch was wrong.

In the context of NBA basketball, they own his status as a player. He can easily quit the NBA if he wants. However, as an NBA player, Kyrie gotta do what the league says.

Now if blk ppl pooled their resources together and created a different league, then it'd be an entirely different story (different rules, different CBA, etc.). Kyrie might be able to play on multiple teams per week if he wanted. He could even coach, perform during the halftime show, or sell his own shoes in the stands during the 4th qtr.

Basically Playing in the NBA = gotta do what the league says.
