Video shows the Waymo passing a white pickup truck pulled over in Los Angeles by several police cruisers with their lights flashing as the suspected driver lays on the ground.

This trip was Waymo dangerous than it needed to be.

Passengers in a robotaxi operated by Waymo were driven just a few feet away from police stop in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday — a brief brush with danger that was caught on video by incredulous onlookers and which ended with nobody hurt.

The driverless vehicle could be seen in the video making a left turn into a street and passing a white pickup truck pulled over at the corner by several police cruisers with their lights flashing.

The suspected driver of the pickup was lying face down on the street at the time, the video showed.

Immediately, the police officers could be heard yelling at the vehicle to get away.

But instead of splitting, the Waymo appeared to slow down briefly and signal it was turning right.

"Go to your left! Go to your left!" a police officer was heard yelling at the wayward Waymo. "Go through."

Meanwhile, the man on the ground looked up to see what was going on. Police are then seen in the video approaching the man with their weapons drawn.

NBC News has reached out to the LAPD for further details about the standoff.

Waymo said the entire encounter lasted barely 15 seconds.

“Safety is our highest priority at Waymo, both for people who choose to ride with us and with whom we share the streets," a Waymo spokesperson said. "When we encounter unusual events like this one, we learn from them as we continue improving road safety and operating in dynamic cities.”

Waymo is owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. It currently operates in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area, and Phoenix, according to its website.

In July, the company said it had passed more than 100 million miles without a human behind the wheel and not one fatality.

But there have been several snafus since the since the service opened to the public in November 2024. And the company has gotten some unwanted attention.

Five Waymo vehicles were torched in June by anti-ICE protesters in Los Angeles.

In July, a cyber-prankster reportedly sent 50 driverless Waymo vehicles down a dead-end street in San Francisco, another incident that went viral.

Then in September, police in the San Francisco suburb of San Bruno were conducting a DUI operation when a self-driving Waymo made an illegal turn in front of them.

The police were unable to give anybody a ticket because, well, there was nobody to ticket. But they contacted the company which promised to fix the “glitch.”

In November, Waymo announced it would begin offering rides on freeways after previously limiting its robotaxis to city streets.

Clearly Waymo isn't the only company abusing the public trust for the sake of its profits. How many people will be arrested because AI said they match the description? How long until legal precedent rules that these flawed digital designations constitute probable cause?

AI has exciting potential, but it's being developed and promoted by ruthless and reckless companies pretending to act for the greater good.

It's time to take that power back!

In other words, "were beta testing our thousand pound death machines at the public's expense."

Tesla just got sued for $40 million over similar practices.

The handful of accidents get a lot of press, but the fact is that autonomous vehicles will save thousands of lives every year.

Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, with over 100 people dying each day.

"A total of 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2023. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent estimate of the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion (Blincoe et al., 2023). Contributing to the death toll are alcohol, speeding, lack of seat belt use and other problematic behaviors. Death rates vary by vehicle type, driver age and sex, and other factors."

In 2021, 43,230 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes, of which 7,388 were people walking. Millions more were injured – sometimes permanently – each year.

The technology may save lives, but so would improved public transportation, walkable neighborhoods, banning SUVs and heavy duty pickup trucks, or strengthening driver's license requirements. These are proven solutions that don't involve subjecting innocent people to a real life trolley problem.

The technology WILL save lives. It will be much easier and much more cost effective to implement than overhauling whole public transportation systems and redesigning whole cities. Most crashes aren't due to SUVs or Pickups. "strengthening driver's license requirements" will be near impossible in our political climate and would not make much of a difference because many accidents are due to speed, distraction, alcohol, fatigue, and other factors that have nothing to do with passing a one time test.

Soon Tesla will have the data that their autonoumous vehicles are much safer than human drivers. If your concern is genuine, then you will support their efforts.

Most crashes aren't due to SUVs and heavy duty pickups, but when they strike a pedestrian their larger grills are far more to likely to cause a fatality than a sedan. That's why their sale and manufacturer needs to be banned or at least heavily restricted.

You don't need to redesign an entire city or transportation system to make the street safer. Just add more buses and make certain areas pedestrian only. Same way New York City did with Times Square.

Also, driver's license standards are controlled by the states and are about as nonpartisan as it gets. Why would the political climate have anything to do with changing them?

The real issue is that none of these tried and true solutions raise the bottom line for a billionaire tech company.

What percentage of pedestrian fatalities are due to SUVs and Pickups? Are current public transportation overcrowded? What likely happens if people can’t pass the DL test?
