I was just curious about all my dreadhead peeps on here. I was wondering what everyone routine is with maintaining their dreads.

Not to mention, stories on how certain people look at you because of your dreads. I'm considering keeping my dreads for the next 4-5 years because I do like feeling of being an individual *I rarely know anyone with dreads in my area*. So, please, share some stories about your life being a dreadhead..

Where do you live? Dreads in the south, are like crack in the 80's. Move to Atlanta like me and dreads are the Honda Accord of hairstyles. I've been loc'ed up for 5 years now, I started back in college. I wasn't inspired by Lil Jon or some cats shaking their dreads on videos. I was getting my kos up, learning some history, and making some changes. I was debating on cutting them so I could get a job but, I was able to land an engineering gig with a Fortune 500 with locs still in tact  . I've never gotten any crazy looks, atleast not to my face. I will be starting school to get my MBA in January. The locs may have to go after finishing up. I've seen dreaded engineers but not executives unless they're the owners...may have to get an Obama. I'm all about being me but at the end of the day I have to be able to eat and feed my my family when I have one. I'll pick a worthier cause to be a martyr for.

Well I'm in North Texas, and everyone I know still have braids and fades. However, I like my dreads because it seems like the women I'm trying to attract are the ones that are attracted to dreads. Therefore, its a win win with me. As for getting a job, I'm currently working for the post office. I've never had any problems *job wise* with my decision. In fact, my boss "which is a woman" think they are cute on me *so she says".

My locs actually got started by "accident" when I left 2 strand twists in too long and the new growth started locing. I decided to just go with it as I had wanted to loc for a long time anyway.

At first, I left the twists in for the length. When the locs were long enough I untwisted the bottom and had real cool locs with curls at the end. Then on one of those days I decided I was tired of the curls at the bottom and cut them off. Big mistake. Now my locs always unravel a bit at the ends.

Next big mistake; I decided to color my hair orangey blond. What a fucking pain in the ass to keep coloring the roots. Then I couldn't get good organic color done home so I let it go. At one point I had 4 to 6 inches of dark brown at the top and 4 to 6 of blonde at the bottom :smh: THEN I decided to just dye the bottom half dark brown too but it didn't work because it kept fading. Then I finally decided to cut off all the blonde parts. So now I just have a shortened set of locs in my natural dark brown color. PRAISE JAH.

THEN I got a liver attack during my tribulations and my locs decided to shed ALOT. I figured all the hair with the bad vibes was busting off. But damn its a saga with these locs lol.

As for maintenance, I wash and twist every 3 weeks or so. I really like the Jamaican mango and lime rasta locs and twist products with the green and yellow labels. They contain no petroleum whatsoever. I wash 3 times with there shampoo and rinse very very well. Then I put leave in conditioner. Then I twist with the gel. Then when its dry I oil my scalp. I rotate what I use to twist. Sometimes I use this other product called "loc up" its more like a creme. Sometimes I use shea butter. I avoid beeswax tho. Inbetween twistings I put leave in conditioner often and sometimes dry twist with shea butter or the loc up. Once in a while I do a hot oil treatment as well especially in winter .
As for peoples reactions the main thing is too many strangers either ask me for weed or try to sell it to me :smh: Certain church variety Caribbean people have a stigma against locs but fuck all a dem. Then here in the states due to my fair complexion alot of people don't overstand my locs and/or don't believe they are real :hmm: Again fuck all a dem.

Niggas asking for hair advice??? On a woman's board? *guffaw*

15 yrs, times have changed. Back in the days, you couldn't walk past a dread without some sort of acknowledgement. Nowadays, A dread'll walk past you as if you don't exist. I've heard some of the dumbest questions on planet earth about my locs over the yrs. Do I put dirt in my hair to make it grow? WHAT!??!Do you bath in the river and wash your hair in it? I live in East Oakland,Ca, born and raised. What the fuck! Ain't not fuckin rivers within 50 miles that I can think of and my waterbill is paid.:confused:Back in the days, I'd be solicated to buy weed and or asked for weed while driving in my car by absolute strangers at stoplights.<<<<on the reg I've been asked for weed by a stranger who was approximated 100yds away without a word being said. And folks who used to talk shit in highschool about my hair have locks going down their backs. One thing I noticed throughout the yrs is that I get a certain amount of respect and have never had to deal with the idiotic 'you step on my shoes', and or 'what you looking at' bs. Adversely, at times, I've encounted some coldness from Black folks because they thought I was from the Caribbean. I've got some shit from folks from the islands when they find out i'm a Black american. I don't know. It's been an interesting ride so far... ONE
ps Pattern male baldness is a bitch to have to expect:angry:

call me anal, call me an asshole, but i feel the need to make a distinction & a comment...

DISTINCTION: twists are not dreads...

locks are not a style for hair. locks grow naturally from not brushing or combing curly hair.

TWISTING IS ABSOLUTELY NOT NEEDED TO GROW LOCKS!

COMMENT:
i've had my locks for over 14 years. Africans have given more more of a hard time anytime than any other ethnicity since i've had my locks.

it's oddly fascinating, & sadly true. over the last 5 years or so, twists have become more common, thereby making the appearance of locks less unique. i don't get dumbasses asking me to touch my locks as much as they did back in the mid-90's.

WTF! if i see a female w/an ass i don't walk up talkin' about can i touch your phat ass...

women are a trip...

locks used to breed mad hate from the ignorant. it's not as bad as it used to be, but this has never been a hairstyle for me...

The shock value of locks has long past and now they are just another hair style. Im growing my fro out now to get loc'ed up next year. Can yall post some pics?

been growing my twists/locks for a bit now.... and its well kept and i work with a company with only white ppl. I did it because i went home to Trinidad my family was doing it.

Out West, would be considered troubled or in the dope game, blame it on the Bay or Oakland. As far as dreads tho cool but alot of em' seem to sell out, dating white people, but on the black power front, omg...!!!
