After Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won Best New Artist and three trophies in the rap category at last month's Grammy Awards, the duo's mouthpiece tried to prove that he thought another nominee should have walked off with some golden hardware: "You got robbed," Macklemore texted Kendrick Lamar. "I wanted you to win."

The private message — which Macklemore made very public by posting it on Instagram — didn't strike everyone as generous. And in the new issue of Rolling Stone (on stands Friday), Drake makes it very clear he thought the message was unnecessary. To put it bluntly, he thought "that !! was wack as !!."

"I was like, 'You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn't deserve it, go get better — make better music,'" he tells us. "It felt cheap. It didn't feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?"

Drake notes that Grammy wins don't always go to the artist who made the best album. "This is how the world works: He made a brand of music that appealed to more people than me, Hov, Kanye and Kendrick. Whether people wanna say it's racial, or whether it's just the fact that he tapped into something we can't tap into. That's just how the cards fall. Own your !!."

And in the end, if Macklemore was going to start doling out apologies, he should have reached out to more nominees, Drake says. "To name just Kendrick? That !! made me feel funny. No, in that case, you robbed everybody. We all need text messages!"

Drake makes a good point. It all seemed phony to me that Macklemore would post that text message. Also he has a point that all the other nominees should have received a text also. I'm not even a Drake fan but there is no way that Macklemore had a better album than Drake, Kenderick, and J. Cole.
 
I feel what Drizzy saying & I thought the exact same thing. Why you sharing private shit like that on social media, that shit was corny & contrived & then only apologize to Kendrick, like ya dick n the booty compilation wasn't better than good kid mad city, but was better than Yeezus, Holy grail & Nothing was the same... #Fuckouttahere

Regardless of all the inference people are making, he had a point with his first comment. It was phony as fuck to post that. Like he wanted credit for that shit in some way.

Macklemore had the gay joint, and ya'll know how hard they pushn the gay shit now, but everybody knows kendrick had the better album, hmmmmm lets have them both win! give the white boy the trophy so the gay shit keeps gettn pushed, and lets have the black boy get talk about by the white boy sayn the black boy is more deserving so he stay popular.... The general public hear that Thrift shop song more than they heard any song from Kendrick. I haven't listened to Macklemore's album so I can't judge it but Kendrick and Drake put out great projects.

Everyone keeps speaking about the gay agenda and it's probably true but you can't sleep on the popularity of the Thrift Shop song.

yeah but thats a song. kendricks album was better and as far as i know kendrick sold more. i tried finding the numbers of macklemores album but couldnt find shit. i dont think he went platnum

To my knowledge Macklemore sold more. Him Kendrick and Drake sold similar numbers all within a couple hundred thousand. I liked Kendrick's and Drake's albums, didn't listen to Macklemore's so I have no opinion of it.

I think the win had more to do with sales and popularity than anything else.
