Does it make sense to take a job that pays LESS than unemployment?

OK, so I got a lead on this part-time job that pays $9/hr for about 20-30 hrs/wk. The unemployment I get now is $310/wk and is guaranteed until January. Does it make any sense to take the job just for the sake of working?

Does not to me, your unemployment was taken from each paycheck you received while working, so why go work for less money coming in??
I would use the free time to acquire new skills or work on some side hustles.

What field were you in before?
How many years did you work there?
What was your hourly rate or salary beforehand?
Are you able to comfortably get by on your savings + $310/month at present?
What kinda job is this $9/hour one?

Holla.

What field were you in before?
Corporate Marketing
How many years did you work there?
4 months...I graduated school in 2008, got a job, worked for 4 months, then got laid off...did 2 internships w/ major corporations before graduation
What was your hourly rate or salary beforehand?
45k
Are you able to comfortably get by on your savings + $310/month at present?
Savings is gone...moved back in w/ my parents, so no more rent though. I can survive on $310.
What kinda job is this $9/hour one?
in the counselor's office of a high school

Hope this helps.

I asked this question before and I was clowned, I see niggas don't like me in BGOL.

All good.

OP,

you still got about 3 months till unemployment runs out, however, you can probably take the 9 per hour and get some additional side benefits to help you out like Food stamps and so forth.

I would take it, only to be working full-time instead of staying home, staying home isn't good and you'll get more frustrated like me.

Hope this helps.

Hmm ... do your boys have any leads on jobs? Are they doing alright with the current economy and such? Could they help you out with anything? Also - are you close to any of your fellow coworkers in corporate marketing who were ALSO laid off?

Me personally ... I'd probably ride it out and size up something better/more monetarily substantial in the meantime ... work is work and all ... but keep your nose to the grindstone, bro.

I thought you neede 26 weeks of employment before you could qualify for unemployment.

You should take the job and it should be easier to get on full time in the district.

Also if what you make is less than your benefit unemployment will make up the difference

Here's another piece to the puzzle...

Just moved back in w/ my parents...my pops worked for the government for 38 years and just retired last year. He's never been without work, so he doesn't really understand the whole unemployment concept. He thinks I'm just being lazy when I say I make more unemployed now than working a BS job w/ no benefits. I'll probably have to take this job, just b/c I can't afford to move out on my own and he won't let me stay here if I'm not working.

hell no playa..... look at it like a paid vacation. you gotta be crazy working for less and think about the factors taxes, gas, lunch/food. you would be making less working then getting unemployment do the math. If you want to do something with your time go volunteer somewhere....

Most of my friends have kept their jobs, but they're constantly living in fear about a pink slip coming. I got laid off at my company b/c I was the last one hired and the department was over budget, both of which had nothing to do with my performance. I was the only person let go in marketing.

I've had a few interviews, but the positions are either going to people who are overqualified and wouldn't be applying for entry-level jobs in a decent economy, or the companies are just not filling the jobs at all.

VA does their unemployment in yearly quarters...I had to wait a few weeks until after I got laid off to file for unemployment b/c I didn't qualify immediately. But b/c of this, my benefits are less than the maximum.

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

Nope,

Him sitting home filling out apps will frustrated him out more and his pops ain't gonna make him stay unless he's working so he should take it.

I like your father's style man, he's strict and seems to live by a code in life.

Take the job and look something else during lunch or break or whatever, also, you got new people around you that you can possibly network with, you might even meet a new chick around the way.

OP, where do you live?

Not unless your unemployment is about to run out.

I would rather have my days free for to find a job and go on interviews.

P.S.

I guess the only way I would yes is if some how you feel u can move up at this new job quickly

Oh, and fuck some of you BGOL niggas, I make a post and I'm called Slowhands or whatever and this dude makes a post and get serious responses and advice.

Fuck some of you niggas, especially dudes like mainman and sirwoodz.

Hmm ... tough call, bro.

Are there any other fields your skills would also translate well to? Which types of interviews (what companies) have you had thus far marketing-wise?

don't take it personal, it's what some of them do.

Yep. You can always search for something in your field with your down time.

Oh, then this question is moot. Go ahead and take it, if for no other reason, to put space between you and your Pop.

does the PT gig give benefits that make it worth it?

i haven't worked at PT gig since HS, so i don't know the standard procedure for them.

I lived in DC, but had to move back to Richmond w/ my parents last week. My pops is cool, but like I said, he's never been in this position, so it's tough for him to understand. Honestly, I've never wanted to work so bad in my life, but if I could make more money being unemployed, it just doesn't make sense to me. It's got nothing to do w/ me being lazy...my pops just sees me on the computer all day (not just on BGOL), and I'll be applying for jobs, but he's old school and doesn't believe u can actually get a job on the internet (the same place I got the 2 internships and the permanent job I had).

Not really...and marketing jobs are extremely scarce right now. I've had interviews w/ the government, an accounting firm, and an engineering firm, and the chamber of commerce in the county I used to live in.

Nope, no benefits...just 20 hrs/wk, $9/hr.

I know what you mean, my father is the same way.. I lived in NY when I was 16, I fucked up and moved to Florida to stay with my mom since my pops used to gun butt me in the head with his 45 on the regular.

I kinda regret it though, you need that tough love to make you a man in life, I'll go back in the minute if the nigga didn't build a mansion in JA.

sounds familiar

i got fired on 8/13 and was denied unemployment becuz of gross misconduct. i have no fucking idea what to do. @27 i've been with the same company (borders) for 8 years, now with 3 kids and no income i am FREAKING OUT. guess it aint really the same...but i am Frein out

Thanks for all the advice, fam...as it stands right now, I pretty much have to take the job or find somewhere else to stay. If nothing else, this shit will get me out of the house and back to actually doing something productive.

Damn, homie...what the hell did u do?

Relative to your situation I would say that living at home and your pops on your back will not allow you to get 'what you paid into'......now, in all honesty I will say HELL NO, IT MAKES NOT NO SENSE!!!

See if you can get something that pays under the table so you won't leave a tax trail AND collect that unemployment...and that becomes another battle, who pays under the table nowadayz ya know....

See about going back to school, additional certs and/or training as well.

dude, appeal that shit it's worth it....HOWEVER....
it maybe a loss if you were fired for fighting, insubordination, or theft....especially theft, cause if it is you maybe brought up on charges...

This is a real thread....I fucking hate my job but when you hear what dudes are going through...I gotta stick it through.

Since you now live under your parents roof and you made it very clear your father is a firm believer that a man should work. As the other poster advised, take the job to keep that distance between you and your dad; you don't need that stress.. You mentioned you have a good work ethic, so I'm sure this could lead to a full time employment with benefits. With it only being 20hrs a week you can still look for other jobs. If the weekly earning is low you still may be able to draw unemployment.
