Do you think the Wire would have done better if it was structured like Law and Order?

Now think about it for a second.

Instead of making it one long story for the season (which I love), do you think they would have been stronger (overall in story and ratings) if they did singular stories around B-more or some other city like how Law and Order does it.?

I think the writing was so good that they might be able to pull it off.

Thoughts.....

NO...It is a series with many different sub plots based upon suburban Baltimore life. It's like a puzzle fella you have to find where the pieces fit.

Re: Do you think the Wire would have done better if it was structured like Law and Or

NOPE

Re: Do you think the Wire would have done better if it was structured like Law and Or

I love Law and Order.

But I don't think that intricate a story line would work.

Re: Do you think the Wire would have done better if it was structured like Law and Or

The Wire is more realistic than Law and Order. Solving a case in 30 minutes, prosecuted in another 30 minutes is unrealistic. No chance to develop the characters or see some of the issues police struggle with.

Re: Do you think the Wire would have done better if it was structured like Law and Or

no, because no matter what, whites are not gonna tune in. and thats what it would take for them to improve ratings.

Re: Do you think the Wire would have done better if it was structured like Law and Or

good lord no. theres enough Law and Order copies and CSI copies out there. Im glad they did it this way gave u a real chance to love or hate a character. the fact is we like stories. Even when slick rick did story telling people were into it and made it a classic. You cant really do that with no one except the cops in Law & ORder or CSI. In the Wire you can love or hate the good and bad. I think there u get a chance to decide if morals matter for you in this story. my .02

I disagree, the detectives and D.A./A.D.A's characters have been well developed over time on SVU, and to a lesser extent on the original. The focus of the show has never been on the suspects, there's no need to develop their characters since they're usually only around for one show.

Fuck no, The Wire is flawlessly structured as it is

...5 Seasons on HBO ain't "bad" , per se. Same as Six Feet Under. Sex and the City and the Sopranos, ran for 6 each. They'd have to leave HBO to run any longer than that...those time slots are precious ;)

Carnivale was the shit, but it only ran 1 season :(

then it would be a typical cop show...but its not the intricacy of the plotline thats the major problem its the majority black cast..

like slowmotion said...white people still wouldn't tune it in large numbers..

The Wire has never been about one ruthless villain, or one relentless cop, or giving viewers anything that they've come to expect from other dramas. Instead, the show adheres to Baltimore's reality, and that means more than putting noted Baltimoreans like onetime police commissioner Ed Norris or Melvin Williams — the former drug kingpin busted by Burns in 1984 — in recurring roles. It also necessitates a predominantly African-American cast, one that the show's creators readily acknowledge hurts their ratings. (The average viewership for season 3 was 1.5 million per episode.) ''It's not just the farmer in Kansas,'' says Burns. ''It might be the suburbanite in Ohio. But there are people who see that many black faces staring back at them and say, 'This is not my story.''' (It's worth noting that season 2, which employed the largest number of Caucasian actors since the show aired, was also its highest rated.)

Law and Order is one of the most unoriginal shows ever.
