Do You Think Jay-z Did A Good Job As President Of Def Jam?

just wanted some opinions because i realized that redman's album, method man's album and even the roots' album came and went without much promotion or noise.

Contrary to what people believe Jay-Z is NOT the end all at Def Jam. Yes he has high say so but not THE Say so. Example: Jay wanted 2 million for Bleeks budget...LA Reid didnt approve that shit....Guess what? Bleek album didnt drop. People give Jay too much credit and criticism..However Def Jam did win 2006 billboard label of the year.

He had success with the junior Beyonce.

But I don't think he even touched hip hop. Must have been too busy with all those trips to St. Tropez.

peace
He had sucess with Rihanna so-so with Ne-Yo and the Hip-Hop side was :dunno:
Exactly
The big forehead Bajan princess and TightCapOn hiding that receending line are paying the bills so that's all that matters right? The other young girl that was signed at the same time aint take and finally heard a FoxxyBrown song last week so gotta keep that shit moving right? HIS shit got out with a "good" amount promo right?

NORE was the 1st to point out in a song that he, Meth, Red, LL, The Roots or none of them proven rap acts got their proper promotions but thats the way of the boutique label now that aint "ya daddy's" defjam no mo

I think that's what folks have to keep in mind.

Things change on the continual.....

D-Nice 1 (The Nice One)

They should look at El-Presidentay and C that just because U got mad promotion don't garuntee sucess. What was Jay's promo budget? I think his shit only sold like a mill or two. Nobody wants to hear that bullshit right now, there too busy listening to Southern bullshit. Here in Philly we strugglin' 2 B heard too, it just ain't time yet. New York niggas wanna be on top all the fucking time, either wait the storm out or switch to south-paw.

No Jay-z has the gift and the curse as he previously named his album he seems to be the only person who can sale when he's on a label.

Nope, They Should Have Had Me Running That Bitch I Would Have Had It Rocking It Would Have Been #1 Every Year.

define "success" it seems like they spent a ton of time, money, and effort on those two then didn't give shit to anybody else on the label and neither are platinum yet. :dunno:

Rihanna is on her 3rd single and she just eeked out of 600,000 most labels would have deaded her project and moved on to the next bunch like they did to all their other artists *cough* redman, methodman ll cool j, roots, bobby v *cough*

Let's just say he's showing sings of improvement.
The first 2 years were HORRID...Teirra Marie, Bleek (never released), Meth ....

He lucked up with Rhianna. Ne-Yo was already pretty well established as a writer.

But the true measure of a good CEO/Manager is what he does with his established veterans, and if they're not producing - invigorating/inspiring them to do better and renew creative juices even if that means pairing them with new energy and younger artist.

LL and Ghostface are the only two Def Jam artist I heard complain.

Especially about how Jay marketed Kingdom Come.

No Boss in the world can please every single employee. :smh:

I think he did pretty well with my limited knowledge of the situation.

The Carter Administration has earned a "B". In a depressed (I say corrected) marketplace, still managed to have good numbers and for Rhianna and Ne-Yo, had a number 1 album in the 3rd quarter (Ludacris), and three in the 4th (his own, Jeezy, and Nas). The success, so far, of Kanye's album is another good move. His later success balances out his earlier failures.

Most of the negatives happened with older acts who would have had a hard time getting significant radio/video play on any label (there aren't too many veteran acts getting big play like that on any label).

He underestimated The Roots' fanbase and didn't push them hard enough. 1 demerit.
He admits to mishandling the LL album by sending the first (garbage)single with Jennifer Lopez to urban radio instead of pop. Another demerit.
Could have pushed Meth, Red, and Ghost harder but didn't. I doubt they would have gotten a bigger push anywhere else either.

L.A reid is the one running shit over at island/def jam

what the fuck does jay-z know about r&b? nothing

you can't give jay-z any credit for rihanna or ne-yo or jezzy or nas

if jay-z was a big time executive making people go platinum
why would he be coming with yet another album?

why would he be leaving def jam in december?

LA reid run island/def jam end of story

how many times cam'ron going to have to tell you ninjas that.

I don't know what the fuck jay-z is doing over there.

As a whole, and I don't blame this on Jay, Def Jam isn't the label that it used to be.. In the past they had almost all the hit makers on the hip/hop and r&b charts (dru hill, foxy brown, LL, and many more)... Now, the heavy hitters are coming from "urban" areas under larger labels, like Sony and Warner brothers...

In reality... I think he did an ok job for someone who has not been trained on how to be an executive...and anyone who believed that he made the final decisions at defjam was an idiot...

:smh:Fuck him. He signed the Roots and then didn't promote Game Theory which is one of the most diverse, best albums of the last five years. Fuck Him:smh:

Now you see the differences that seperated him from Dame Dash.

This is the same shit that Dame complained about at the Roc.

Jay doesn't believe in going all out and blowing budgets on people who don't sell and can't make hot shit out the box. Jay wanted people to make it on they own. Dame wanted Jay on all of the lead singles to make them hot. I side with Jay on that though because if the shit ain't hot without him it won't be with him. He can't be on every damn single his crew put out. YOU make it hot and build a career for yourself.

Jay helped those who he saw would underperform in the market (Red, Meth, Roots) by NOT BLEEDING THEM FUCKING DRY! Spending a million dollars on a Roots project is throwing money away. They not gonna sell like that. Put that album out. Go get that show money. Your core audience is going to buy it. Def Jam make money. Roots make money.

What's the problem here? :hmm:

You really surprised that no one wants to buy a cd from a rapper thats over 35. Your surprised kids don't associate well with rappers that are the same age as there parents in most cases. Wake the fuck up most people today only buy albums to show support for an artist, hell if you can't get it for free someone will sell it to you for 5 dollars. The only reason Jay-Z is still succesful because of a combination of blind luck and marketing genius. Young kids like his collabos with younger artist and clubs jams. While older cats know he'll always put some grown-up tracks on the album even if they don't get radio play.

Co Sign:
Even LL was getting mad on he didn’t promote his last album the way he did. Jay Z came out of pocket on Kingdom Come. Jay pushed Def Jam to put out 3 LL videos befoe the realease of the last album and he still wasnt satisfied. How much promotion does one person really need? LL has been in the game for a long time and he couldn’t even sell to his fan base (the ladies) at certain points in your career, your name will sell.
Example: 50, Jay, Eminem, Dre, Outkast, etc....will go at least platinum based of their name alone.
Lyor Cohen (former Def Jam CEO) was considered a mastermind when he flooded the fourth quarter (releasing Foxy Brown, Redman, Method Man, DMX, etc... all around Christmas)
Jay did it with Ghostface, Nas and Young Jeezey, and himself and he was labeled stupid.
Artists hate to see their peers in charge. Thats why LL is so mad at Jay. You gotta go get 50 cent to help write your album to become relevant again?

No, Nyet, Nien, emphatic Now Cipher..

The groups that succeeded are the ones that promoted themselves.

Juelez Santana: Cam promoted
Kanye; Dame (and indirectly 50) promoted
Jeezy: self promoted

They did a better job because Lyor and Kevin didnt have to battle internet downloads. Yeah albums were bootlegged but still had sales. Music is so watered down today that we have no choice but to "preview"the music. And ill be the first to say i download, but if the artist has i tight album, i go out and buy the orignal to support them. We are going back to when a rapper sold 500,000, they were on top. But lets think, name 10 albums in the past 10 years that you could push play and let the album go without hitting FF. 1997 is when Real Hip Hop was infected with "cancer" it has slowly been dying since. Thanks to Master P and Puff Daddy. Then you get that artist with a message that doesnt reference Cars, Rims, and and Ice.....and he'll be lucky if he sells 200,000.

i was thinkin bout it....Dame should be Def Jam Pres. Jay is a borderline hater, he is not going to market nobody else like he markets himself. kanye had a lil market but it was just kanye.....he's gonna sell...look at how he's doing ll....i mean i not the biggest fan of LL but that's fucked up...and esp. the roots...What the fuck was that all about....he screwed the roots, to make himself seem as if he wanted to see them prosper, but no budget no nothing....i hate that dude...
