Do you refer to yourself as an "African American"?

Yeah it's kinda a useless topic, but i always wondered why that phrase is used to identify a race of people. I never used this phrase to describe myself, or another black person. I describe myself as black. That's it!

Oh, by the way... this rich bitch by definition, is an African American! :hmm: :smh: :hmm:

I've said African-American because the term was being used in conversation...but 99% of the time, I refer to myself as Black.

But one thing that I refuse to refer to myself as is a "minority"...I loathe that word.

I just say black. I'm too lazy to bother with political correctness all the time.

Wouldn't "African American" mean I was a dual-citizen, anyway?

I just say black. I hate all this political correctness bullshit. I laugh when I am around white people and they act scared to say black. They will start to say it, then have this confused/scared look on their face and then say African-American. Most of the time I tell them just to say black, I dont care, I dont find it offensive.

Well actually African is the correct term for those of us who originate from the continent... we are Indigenous African people. The hyphenated "American" came in to play because we have established new roots on the American continent. If a chinese person came to American, they wouldn't automatically be considered "American" as a nationality. He can gain American citizenship, but that is something totally different.

The problem most Black people have with the term African American is that fact that most of them don't even know what the fuck it means because they don't know the difference between nationality, citizenship, race etc.; if they did, they would know that the term is used properly.

And just because that Kerry broad was born in African and is American, doesnt make her African American, because she is not an indegenous African.

The term Black is confusing to most people because they don't seem to know the difference between a NOUN and an ADJECTIVE. This who argue, I'm not "Black" and say they are "Brown" are sing the term as a adjective. Those that cuturally use the term Black to describe a people, are using it as a NOUN. People youre confusing yourselves.. maybe if you study the English language a bit more you'd know the differnce.

You can thank the brilliant Jesse Jackson for promoting the term, which is more geographical than racial.

(Of course, white Charlize Theron, born and raised in Africa, is more "African-American" than the majority of U.S. blacks.)

Why should I not take CLAIM to America.

I live here.

My ancestors built this country's wealth. I RESPECT THAT, even if it was the greatest tragedy this world has ever known. I respect that they died, fought more than is taught, and even though I do not recieve a fair shake on this land I will continue that fight and demand equality for those who will come after me and their right to this land's wealth.

I'm a black man born in america. i dont feel any connection to africa and im only american because i was born here. just call me black

But whether you FEEL a connection or not to Africa you have to admit that is from whence your ancestors came....even if you got some white Blood in you..

Sad thing is White folks want Both Continental Africans and Those of The African Diaspora to feel exactly what you do.....NO CONNECTION!!....

Hmmmmmm.....wonder why that is???

Hmmmmmm.....wonder why that is???

the PROBLEM is that white folks know that ALL people... that's right, ALL mankind originated from africa.

they KNOW the migration patterns.
they KNOW how climate, diet, and surroundings resulted in appearance changes amongst people over hundreds of thousands of years.
they KNOW they are genetic mutations of the original man... with weaker skeletal muscles, etc.
they KNOW all of this shit.

the BIGGER problem is that most black people don't know these things... won't open a book to learn these things, and continue to let simplistic terms describe who they are as people.

see, white folks want YOU to say african-american, and others to say, indian american, mexican american, cuban american, etc., etc. meanwhile, they call themselves simply "american." that's when i call, "bullshit," and refer to them as european americans.

they are STILL on that subconscious shit... to make the weaker minds accept them as the original people of america-which as we all know is total and complete natural grade A bullshit.

the problem lies in the fact is most blacks in america do not know what country they are from. they only know africa, which is a continent. it pisses me the fuck off because it really sinks in that most black folks have been robbed their identity, they could be nigerian and not even know it

Cosign. But I don't like the term African American heres why;

In 97 when I was returning from Columbia, U.S. customs had two lines, one for Americans and one for everything else. They didn't ask for the politically correct hyphenated prefix.

I'll never forget the look on the faces of the foreigners as we Americans were whisked through customs. Black and white. I'll never forget how they stared at our blue passports while they waited in line for a glimpse of our sun.

I'm American fam...period.

I'll use the term before I use the term ni99a.
And I'll DAMN sure call myself an African American
before I ever refer to MYSELF as a NEGRO (calling
yourself either just shows the level to which your
brain has been taken away from you)

Just because white people can use the term to describe
themselves is not reason to discard yourself of your
own heritage. Understand that Africa is a CONTINENT,
not a country. There's are HUNDREDS of millions of
people on the African continent. All different races of
people. Just like in this country (and the North American
continent). Ironic that a white person might want to claim
to be an African-American" while we of the black race
are not. No wonder it constantly gets raped.

The funny thing is that so many are so quick to refer
to themselves as "American", but you can be from the most
southern part of Argentina or Chile and you are still an
American

Huh? What wealth? This economy would be crippled if we stopped blowing half a trillion. We're making more of this countries wealth today than in the past and doing it willingly. This country doesn't export anything beyond entertainment in music, movies and sports really. And that's basically also our doing whether directly through promenince in most sports and with hip hop or indirectly with everything else that we used to do and have moved on from.

It doesn't sound like your respecting their loss by not reclaiming your true name and culture that were taken to weaken and brainwash you into aspiring to be white something that aint ever going happen.

I'm interested in fair treatment while here but i'm not interested in sharing the spoils of European theft for generations. The continent has the most wealth any where yet people want invest their education and skill in continuing American dominence which means white supremacy. Sounds like people are still slaves and the programming our ancestors received to spare them having to torture each individual slave instead of one and that slave raising their child to be subserviant is alive and well.

just google diaspora

She's not an indigenous african. Just like most Americans are not indigenous North Americans, speaking on the last five thousand years.

She's not an african american either. She never was african. Being born in Japan does not make me ethnically Japanese.
Assholes are getting geographical birthplace and ethnic background confused.

**note to assholes - I use the word ethnicity in regard to a common shared racial and cultural identity. A clarification since its a broad term.

No one would dare suggest a stringy haired white bitch who is obviously non-arab is racially african or ethnically african in any fuckin way unless they were attempting to help further the cause of white colonialist, imperialist and racist apologists the world over.

Have you ever been to Africa? How knowledgeable are you about the different customs, traditions, and culture in some African countries? Just curious.

If I am going to have a connection to something then I want it to be apart of me. Ive never been to Africa in my life so I am not going to have anything in common with the people there as far as culture, customs, and beliefs go. The only thing that I have I have in common with the people there on a social level is that I am black.

I have been to Africa....and you don't have to believe me....But you have more in common with the people there than you can even imagine....I also got a lot of Continental African friends in this country......

And while many will diss you.....there are many that don't....there are many who feel that The primary hope for People of African descent from The Cape of Good Hope to Algeria and Morrocco....and those spread out thru out the world is to collate...to join together

As regards culture...listen to the Blues or R anf B or Spirituals or Jazz or Hip Hop....you will find similarities that will fuck you up.....

Yo my bro You are African But you just don't know it........But The White Man (as a Global Force) knows this....and the thought of that ever occuring scares the shit out of him........And for good reason !!!

shut up you cracka faggot scum
You make more threads pumping up some fake stereotypical bullshit about black people than anyone else on this board and yet have the nerve to talk shit to a dude who has proven who he is and what he's about by helpin cats in need on this board and serving the community?

You're a lowlife. You're the smegma off a rancid dead cracka's cock. Stick to making threads about not knowing how to dress for interviews and being scared of black people at clubs.

I only identity myself by my carribbean nationality. Obviously our ancestors are african, but I don' call myself african.....this or african.... that. I have african friends who are ol skool and deeply rooted in culture who take offense when someone say they are african american.

If u weren't born or have ever been to Africa, don't call u'r self african-american. Cause in the end the only thing african about u will be in u'r skin color when day is done. The reality is gonna be that any black man or woman living in North America will have waaay more in common with white people than he would with any real african person who has not been influenced by north american society or pop culture. So once again why call u'r self african when the average non-african person probably knows nothing about the culture or it's people outside of everyday sterotypes or perceptions??

i had a talk about this a work, i work with people from, Ghana, Togo, Rwanda,Niger,Sudan and I think Senegal. I said, "why do we call ya'll Africans, when we're called Americans, if thats the case we should be called North Americans. This other guy(American) said," Man you know how many countries they have over there", I was like, "So what that mean"
The guy from Ghana said that they(folks), want all of them to be classified together, The guys from Togo said, that the US like things to be simple about Africa.

but far as the question goes, this been on my mind to, and i just think its a "racial profiling" so thanks to this board I'm becoming aware of history and different point of views from the BGOL family, which are great thoughts most of the time,

I'm starting to feeling better with the "black" thing than the "African-Amerikkka" but that's better "Afro-American" which is better than "Negro", which is better that "******"

My take on it is this.

White people from Ireland are proud of their Irish heritage.

White people from Italy are proud of their Italian heritage.

Why shouldn't I be proud of my African heritage? Simply because my ancestors were forced to accept life here having been separated and stripped from their culture doesn't mean I'm going to disown it.

When you ask my nationality I am undoubtedly American, but my roots and lineage will ultimately link me back to Africa. It's not about being politically correct, it's about acknowledging my foundation.

Btw, the term African-American wouldn't and doesn't apply solely to black people.

Bish u'r still here lol. This is 2007 & u still haven't realized that slave days are over son, well get used to it. Physically, slavery ended along time ago so it's about time it started ending mentally for u as well. Anyway here's a classic song/methaphor I wrote for ya to memorize or live by.

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation triumphantly.

Chorus:
Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom?
' Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs,
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery,
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it;

We've got to fulfill the book.

Again.....

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery,
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it,
We've got to fulfill the book.

Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs.
All I ever had:
Redemption songs.
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.
