Police investigate the scene where an 11-year-old boy was shot

HOUSTON –
A suspect has been detained after an 11-year-old boy was shot in the back and killed Saturday night while playing a prank known as “ding-dong ditch” in Houston’s Eastside.

The shooting happened at a home in the 9700 block of Mimbrough.

Authorities say several weapons were recovered from the middle-aged suspect’s home, and the investigation is ongoing.

What we know

The prank, sometimes called “doorbell ditch,” is a game where someone rings a doorbell or knocks and runs away before anyone answers.

Investigators said the children were playing “ding-dong ditch” at a home in Houston’s Eastside when someone came outside and shot the boy.

The child was struck multiple times and was taken to a hospital.

Neighbors we spoke with said they were shocked to hear the young boy had been shot.

Nearby resident Theresa Jones called the shooting “really sad” and said guns shouldn’t be around kids, noting, “a bullet doesn’t have a name.”

Officers were seen taking a man in handcuffs out of a police unit and walking him back to the home where the shooting happened. Police have not released the shooter’s name or said whether any charges have been filed, a police spokesperson said. The investigation is ongoing.

“At this time, prayers are going out to the family of the child. That’s been shot,” said an officer with HPD’s major assault division early this morning.

(NEXSTAR/AP) – A man in Houston has been charged in the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy after a prank in which the boy rang the doorbell of a home and ran away.

Leon Gonzalo Jr., 42, was charged Monday with murder, according to the Houston Police Department.
The boy had been ringing doorbells as a prank late Saturday evening, the Houston Police Department said in a statement. The boy, who was shot once, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead Sunday, police said.

Commonly referred to as “ding dong ditching,” the prank involves fleeing before someone inside the home opens the door. A witness said the 11-year-old was running away from the house when he was shot, police said.
Gonzalo was booked into the Harris County Jail. Police spokesperson Shay Awosiyan said that officers were still investigating.

Other “ding dong ditch” pranks have turned deadly in the past. In 2023, a Southern California man was convicted on three counts of first-degree murder for killing three teenage boys by intentionally ramming their car after they rang his doorbell as a prank.
And in May, a Virginia man was charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting an 18-year-old who had rung his doorbell while a filming a TikTok video of the prank, the New York Times reported.

I'm with the homeowner on this. The parents are at fault having their kid out doing mischief.
He shot a kid in the back. While I'm with the homeowner, you shouldn't play a stupid games like this, the kid ran and he shot him in the back anyway. There was no threat, and thus no reason to pull the trigger
