Did Lovie Smith underachieve as Chi.HC with 3* HOFers and about 5 or 6 more borderline HOFers?

*Urlacher is in. Orlando Pace spent 1 year('09) with Bears , he's in HOF. Julius Peppers was a Bear from '10-'13. It's a given he gets in Canton. Ruben Brown was a Bear from '04-'07, he will probably be a HOF nominee. Others in the HOF conversation that played for Lovie:C Olin Kreutz, LB Lance Briggs, KR Devin Hester . Robbie Gould, Matt Forte, Charles Tillman and Greg Olsen may or may not get in. Same for Brandon Marshall. Should Lovie have done better than 81-63 in the regulars season with the Bears and 3-3 in the playofffs?

No. The squad had an offense for half of the year they went to the Superbowl. The D was stout, but that alone don't win chips. All those good offensive players you named, all but 1 made more of a name for themselves outside of Chicago. None played QB, and Forte as good as an all around back as he was... Was an easily replaced RB.

Love got them as far as they were going.

5 years before Lovie= one season above 500
5 years after Lovie= one season above 500

Lovie= 9 seasons. 7 above 500. Super bowl appearance with shit QB.

Bears= 5 postseason appearances in 25 years. 3 with Lovie.

Lovie Overachieved.

/thread.

I have no malice towards Lovie and appreciate what he didz, but You could argue that he both overachieved and underachieved. He really only was able to make the Seahawks his prison bitch in the playoffs. The LovieBears mostly had to outtalent the playoff teams to beat them, rarely out schemed them. Ever notice the Bears domination over Green Bay under Lovie ended when Aaron Rodgers took over? The Bears Tampa- was mostly effective vs overconfident qb's and halfwits, not surgeons like Rodgers.

An argument could be made that the effort the defense put forth in '05, carrying the to the playoffs with Orton as qb, was more of a herculean effort than '06. At least in'06, there were many games that the offense and special teams could spot the "d" with a double digit lead. Just as the "d" and special teams could give the "o" essy field position. Re: the '05 season, while he Jeff Blake, Orton's backup was old and washed up, I thought maybe Lovie should've given more thought to letting Blake take the reigns till Grossman returned.

Lovie wasn't perect, he was stubborn as fuck. I would've given Rex the reins before that Atlanta game. But Kyle never made the big mistakes and I guess that's why he stuck with him.

But looking back on his time... I'm not sure what more he was supposed to have done to get them over the hump. He coached in a time where winning it all with elite D was harder than previous decades.

lol

First half of the season Rex had the offense looking right. It was hit/miss the 2nd half of the season. Really, after they skated put of Arizona with him throwing like 4 or 5 pics. I forget, but he was never the same after that. It was good Rex or bad Rex after that.

A QB from Florida not knowing how to play in the rain. Inexcusable. Defense was hurt hurt too. No Brown or Harris.

Grossman was quite posibly the best Gator qb to play in the NFL. What an indictment on the FLorida program. Here's another thing I wanna add that I don't mention to many Bears fans. I thought that WR Mark Bradley could've helped in the playoffs. He was an effective weapon on the slant pass in the regular season, especially on the Meadolands road trips.
See the 1:59 mark in this highlight video. Bradley is #16 who scores the game clinching td. I sometimes wonder if his speed and RAC ability would've been effective vs.the Colts in the Super Bowl.

To his credit, his defense was,one of the few in the league that could render Michael Vick in his prime ineffective. Mostly because of Urlacher and Briggs. The only time Vick ever hurt the Bears was when he was an old, ex-con playing for the Eagles. Think he hurt them on a draw play on a night game .

Raise of hand from head coaches that won big with Jay Cutler or Rex Grossman.

Then don' t you go to mgmt/owner's offense and demand that the hire the best qb coach on the market, money be damned. Rex had Wade Wilson. Come on. Was there no one better than that? I think Jay had Matt Cavanugh as his qb coach at one point. Is that the best the Bears could do? But traditionally, Papa Bear and his descendants skimped on the qb and offensive skill position coaches. They are way better now. Nagy looks like he knows what the fuck he's doing.

End of the fucking thread......people just starting threads to start em

Shula had a Dolphins team qb's by David Woodley trailing he Skins 17-20 in the 4th quarter in the Super Bowl Riggins ran wild on them and scored the game winning td. Let's not act like Rex was the only fucking joke qb to start a SB.

Did he "outtalent" them when he won 12 games and a division with Kyle Orton?

Tressman had Briggs, Pepp, Forte, Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Peanut Tillman all still in they prime and won 5 games i believe... Why didnt he "outtalent" anybody?

He did. That Carolina game in the regular season where Bears defense nearly decapacited Jake Delhomme, was masterful. Carolina had an answer for the playoffs. Steve Smith was running thru the secondary as if the old with CAC owner, Virginia McCaskey was covering him. They clearly had a plan to counterract the Bears defensive domination in the regular season.

Thank you

I rarely see these questions asked of white coaches

Rex rarely had a middle ground. He could slice you up short, long or medium in one game, then look like he never played football in his life the next week.

This dude creates the most random threads

So do a bunch of other posters. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony/induction was this weekend. That got me on this train of thought. Oh, and I saw a Devin Hester highlight vid the other day in a Facebook NYC area Bears fans group I belong to.

Lovie’s mistake was in ‘05 not riding Kyle Orton to the Super Bowl and instead putting Rex Grossman back at QB late in the season, then Steve Smith torching them in the Divisional Round getting Carolina up 14-0 before the late arrivals could even get seated.

He also got his hand forced by management to draft and play Cedric Benson when Thomas Jones was easily the better back; Benson fucking fumbled in SB 41; underachieved in Chicago them promptly TORCHED the Bears in his first game against them (as a Bengal).

All Danieal Manning has to do is keep coverage on Reggie Wayne for a half second longer; Peppers sacks Manning; Bears rout is on; instead he hit Wayne for a long touchdown and they win the SB. Oh well.

You might mean Adewale Ogunleye. Peppers didn't become a Bear toll 2010.

Quietly until that first injury Rex had scrambling for a TD against the Vikings in like his rookie or second year, he looked every bit like the dude who came 2nd in the Heisman voting. Always had a cannon for a arm and threw darts.....after that injury it was “good Rex”, “bad Rex” from that point on.

Appreciate the correction you are right. I was confusing Peppers almost sacking Rodgers in the finale in 2013 when he hit Cobb to win the game and knock Chicago out the playoffs and put GB in.
