Despite 'Serious Reservations', Pres. Obama Signs Defense Bill

WASHINGTON -- Indefinite military detention of Americans became the law of the land Saturday, as President Barack Obama signed a defense bill that codified that authority, even as he said he would not use it.

The National Defense Authorization Act states how the military is to be funded, but also includes a number of controversial provisions on arresting and holding suspected terrorists, which at first drove Obama to threaten a veto.

He retreated from that threat after Congress added provisions that took the ultimate authority to detain suspects from the military's hands and gave it to the president. Congress also clarified that civilian law enforcement agencies -- such as the FBI -- would still have authority to investigate terrorism and added a provision that asserts nothing in the detention measures changes current law regarding U.S. citizens.

Still, the signing on New Year's Eve as few people were paying attention angered civil liberties advocates, who argue that the law for the first time spells out certain measures that have not actually been tested all the way to the Supreme Court, including the possibility of detaining citizens in military custody without trial for as long as there is a war on terror.

"President Obama's action today is a blight on his legacy because he will forever be known as the president who signed indefinite detention without charge or trial into law,” said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

How will this play for his chances this year?? I'll admit I'm not crazy about the detention aspect being attached to this bill and I think the Republicans will jump all over this. However if the shoe was on the other foot, I don't think the Repubs would have hesitated to sign it.

It is not only indefinite detention, it gives the military the power to conduct surveillance on Americans.

If you want to see what a police state looks like, than check out this movie...The things I am seeing in it, is not to far from what is going in America.

This is the military or some civilian law enforcement agency coming into your home when you are gone installing equipment with no warrant and ties to any criminal activity; typing up reports. A lot of these countries have democratic in the official name such as the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Democratic's People Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Democratic United States of America. Calling yourself democratic doesn't mean you are free or not living in a police state.

Voting in East Germany (United States) was relatively simple. To vote yes, a voter simply took the ballot paper, which contained only one name—that of the approved candidate—and dropped it into the voting box (in the United States it is two approved candidates). A voter could vote against the candidate by crossing out his or her name, but had to do so in a separate voting booth without any secrecy. The consequences for such an act of defiance were severe—loss of one's job or expulsion from school, and close surveillance by the Stasi.[23] Damn that shit happens in the U.S, doing something and losing your job and getting put under surveillance.
