The team at Warners Bros. and DC are really confident that their next big release, Aquaman, is going to swim not sink.

EW exclusively spoke to the film’s producers and the studio’s executive brass about the next title in the DC Extended Universe coming Dec. 21. The film starring former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa as the half-Atlantean, half-human superhero has been shrouded in secrecy and has only publicly released a couple photos so far, but there are hints that a trailer could be coming soon. The movie represents the first superhero film by director James Wan, best known for his work on The Conjuring and Insidious films, yet also tackled Furious 7 — the top-grossing film of the Fast & Furious franchise.

“James has done an incredible job with his team,” says Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich. “The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”

One of the film’s producers, Peter Safran, tells us the film has, “got the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels … it’s a testament to James’ unique vision. I think it’s an extraordinary step in DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”

The storyline is largely being kept under wraps, but it’s expected to introduce Arthur Curry as a surface-dwelling outcast who battles his half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) over the fate of Atlantis. Expect to see sights such as the seven undersea kingdoms, giant octopi and Atlanteans riding great white sharks into battle.

DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns (who recently announced he was exiting the company for a writing and producing deal) knows plenty about Aquaman, having penned some of the comics in addition to co-writing the story for the standalone film.

“The underwater stuff has never been executed like this before,” Johns tells us. “The visual effects shots coming in are just beautiful. James can switch modes from horror to big bright colorful action to really emotional scenes. He’s so able to hit all these different genres.”

That description, “big bright colorful,” is telling. We’re hearing Aquaman is visually more punchy and with more humor than some of the previous DC films directed by Zack Synder that were known for a more grim aesthetic. The last, Justice League, ended up disappointing at the box office despite grossing a pretty sizeable $658 million. DC also has 2019’s Wonder Woman sequel, a stand-alone Joker movie with Jared Leto reprising his Suicide Squad role, another presumed Justice League film, and a The Flash stand-alone in the works.

I'll say this........it has everything going for it. From reading this its actually a bright colored film with some comedy relief. That's already a plus for DC movies.

That dude looks like he's about to go strip at a white middle class bachelorette party :smh: cheesy.

I definitely won't be comin outta pocket for this.

I think they could pull it off with Aquaman. They know their old formula wasn't working.

I may go check it but not on the first night. Gonna read the BGOL Review before I spend my money.

The same studio with 2 Joker movie's with 2 different actors in 2 different "universes?"

Seem like every DCEU movie coming down the pike after Aquaman,Shazam and WW 2 will be Batman-related in some way(the 2 Joker films, the Harley Quinn solo movie,Birds of Prey,Batgirl,Gotham City Sirens, etc :smh: )

Aquaman is one of my favorite DC characters so I'll see the movie off that alone. And Dude playing Black Manta was good in the Get Down.

after seeing how aquaman was portrayed in justice league whoever said that this movie is a masterpiece is clearly is spewing pure propaganda.

they are trying to get good opening weekend numbers.

based on where they are going with the character...

I thought the BEST course of action would be an undersea rock and roll game of thrones.

almost a Chronicles of Riddick in the ocean.

A new and improved Waterworld meets 300.

something like that.

The fact that their best movie (Wonder Woman) is the same as the worst Captain America movie (First Avenger) should tell you something.

I hope it's good, but I doubt it. They already fucked up Darkseid

Yup same script with a few tweaks. I think it's worse than CA:FA. Much worse. I can watch FA over and over if only to see Haley Atwell's tig ole biddies. Gadot is flat as a diving board. Plus Marvel did the time period much, much better. I could go on and on because I think WW sucked big time. I think it just caught the right moment.
Anyway, I say all that to say, these are the same people who brought us JL where the underwater scenes put me to sleep they were so fucking boring. Now it's a whole movie?
Somehow I'm skeptical.

the first two acts in wonder woman were good. the last act killed the movie.

I disagree. Better than the rest of the movie? Most certainly. It would be hard not to be. The beginning had so many plot holes it was laughable. Soldiers come from a gunship yet don't shell the beach with the guns? Oh, wait, the entire crew came ashore. In hostile waters. Gimme a break. The beach battle was decent. Far inferior to Marvel's battles but decent. The whole "created by Zeus" thing was presented so awkwardly it was idiotic. Honestly, Connie Nielson was the best thing about the movie.

Good point, i didn't give the announcement long enough to even put those points together..

And they're all centered around this weak ass batman at that. Where was DC's imagination and creativity when Snyder was doing Batman and they were really racking uo numbers in the box office? They sat fat in their expensive ass ergonomic chairs thinking shit was sweet.... The pigs got fat and turned into hogs..

And like the (in)famous James Prince once said. "Never get into the pigpen with pigs, pigs turn into hogs, and then hogs get slaughtered."

I know taken out of context, but i really liked the quote, haha

So. Another time piece. And we're still supposed to think because gadot has an unusual accent that that translates into acting talent. Captain Kirk is probably looking for a transporter in this scene.

Who knows? Maybe it'll do big numbers but I still think the first one was wack and just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
