Customer Forced to Buy Costco Membership to Leave Store After Getting in With Mom’s Card

AA1cE6ky.img

Raise your hand if you've used someone else's Costco membership card at some point in your past.
For some of us, we come out of this ruse completely unfazed. But for one customer, shopping at Costco with the mom's membership card turned into quite a story to tell.
The customer shared their experience on TikTok, and not surprisingly, people had some comments. Read on for details and decide if being forced to buy a new membership to leave the store is justified or just ridiculous.

This shopper wasn't planning on buying a new Costco membership card — but they did!

AA1cEi6E.img

The story of a shopper who is now a (maybe not) proud new owner of a Costco membership card was shared on TikTok by a creator who uses the handle @megancahalan along with the caption, "Costco is so strict for what?"
The shopper, named Meg, then posted a short, 11-second video that says, "POV: You got into Costco with your mom's Costco card but had to buy your own in order [to] exit Costco."

We see a man's picture on the new card, and then he is using the self-checkout to pay for items. It's unclear what this person's relationship is to Meg. What is clear is that commenters to this TikTok have some very strong reactions to this share, with many folks empathizing with Meg's experience.
One commenter called Costco "the most anxiety inducing store," while someone else offered the (too late) tip to use the excuse, "My mom is in the bathroom."
Another commenter accused the checkout people at Costco of being "nosy."
Meanwhile, yet another commenter joked that Costco "is starting to crackdown like Netflix," referring to the streaming service's password sharing ban. And finally, multiple people said Sam's Club is better and not as strict with carding.

To be fair, some loyal Costco members defended the discount warehouse's membership policy, with one person ironically retorting, "It's almost like the cards say non-transferable and it's members only."

Costco's membership policy is pretty clear when it comes to card sharing.

No matter your take on Meg's shopping experience, Costco is pretty clear about sharing a membership card on its website, stating, "The Costco membership card is non-transferable."
However, the company also states that members can share their cards if they are present when a guest shops with them. "Keep in mind that purchasing items is exclusive to Costco members," the policy goes on to state.
Meanwhile, so-called Primary Members or account managers can assign another family member to use their membership privileges, but this process has to be completed online.

Ultimately, it must be noted that Meg and her shopping partner were not "forced" buy a Costco membership in reality. They could have abandoned their items and chosen to leave the store. But those deals...
Ultimately, perhaps this tale will serve as a warning to other shoppers. Based on recent social media activity, Meg is clearly not the only customer who has fallen victim to the seeming crackdown on membership cards.
Sigh. First Netflix, now Costco. Are we going to have to start using our real names when we order Starbucks?

Lol this was me about 3 months ago using my cuzz card.. was using their shit for a yr. Then renewal came up and the manager was called and the dude really stared mad hard at the black and white pic and was like wait this isn’t you. I was like hey I just paid for last yr membership for this card I’m pretty much the second partner ( all lies) .. they than did a check of course my name wasn’t on it. But somehow they was like hey you said you paying for everything in cash right? Aite let him use the membership but don’t comeback until you have your name put on that card or you get a separate one

Ol clickbait title made it seem like she was held hostage untill she bought a new card...

she couldve left the shit there and walk out....

folks got too spoiled and didnt realize a company has a right to enforce its policy.....

plus according to the article you can just add a family member online....

that being said, costco is still full of shit because they make some serious money selling information

on your buying habits... data mining is fuckin HUGE business nowadays

Least they can do is continue to be a little lax on their membership policy

Actually if you look at company policy it says you have to live in the same household and it’s only for one other person. So if you don’t share the same residence you can’t share which is some bullshit. At least bj’s give you up to like 6 other people at a discount price to get memberships. Plus bjs all throughout the yr being giving discount memberships to new customers. Only problem there’s no bjs in Harlem or anywhere in Manhattan son of a bitch

Costco got them on the ropes.... they struggling for customers

I was at Costco a couple of months ago and they did tell a guy that he couldn’t buy the stuff because it wasn’t his card.

I also noticed that they come scan some cards while you’re waiting in line.

At its highest Their stock tripled since Covid begun.. it’s stock now 2.5 times it’s worth since March 2020.. bjs is basically looked at as the cheaper warehouse.. they said Costco is looked at as upperclass, Walmart version is looked as middle class, and bjs is looked at the lowest.. it has the least stores of them but truthly if it had the same amount of stores most people would probably get the cheaper membership 1 since they sell a lot of similar products

People ain't got $50?

Unless it's your mommas card and you live with her I don't understand the problem.
Not how much you make but how much you save. It’s like shut up I’m buying shit and adding to your sales and profit and you crying like a bitch cause I didn’t want to cop a seperate card. Would you rather me spend thousands per yr at your store and not pay for a membership or not buy a membership and take my bizz elsewhere?

Basically, four fucking dollars a month for those discounts and deals they be dying for..... fucking pathetic

.
U’ll be surprised how many rich people share cards and don’t pay for individual memberships. Or go group shopping.. this what the Jews mastered.. being cheap and saving the most.. notice the vid has a pale face involve and he’s using his mom card. This happens wayyyyyy more than people think.. this why they pushing that policy more

Don't kid yourself...... ain't that many of those cheap fucks around..... like you said, upper class mentality...... the hood folk don't want to spend the fifty.... it's ingrained in them to get the maximum discount anywhere.... including free use of the card... and they could always take their trifling asses back to the supermarkets and shop if the fifty, four dollars a month is too much for them... fuck spending four dollars a month to save hundreds a year :dunno:
sidebar: same mofos you see with their fucking carts and those flatbed carts loaded shoulder high with shit when they get access to a card and be in there

You really trying to put a blackface on this smh.. most Costco are in well to do neighborhoods and lot of their customer base is white.. they literally Pointed out majority of their customer base annual income is in the upper middle class.. look up many vids about Costco. So if their customer base is mostly pale faces who you think is running these scams? It’s cacs… most people will tell you how much cacs steal , tamper with products, switch items, etc.. if you don’t know this or refuse to believe this that says a lot about you… in fact like I said bjs tend to be popular in the Hispanic and black community than Costco. Cheaper membership

By the way outside of me it was always cacs and a few Asians that got pulled to the side for using someone else card.. I go to the one in Spanish Harlem/ every week

No, I'm not.... but maybe it seems that way because I live in the hood...... and it's my own folk that are doing it.... and complaining about the $50... I'm not around cacs like that... just speaking from the experience from what I see and hear first hand, at work and other spots

Know a few Costco workers and they say the same. Most didn’t care until Costco overseers started really pushing the policy big time. I definitely seen cacs get mad trying to cop tvs, other appliances, etc and going to the register and being denied the ability to buy shit. Actually been seeing a lot lately. Cacs be like I have a friend or family that’s a member, why does it matter if I don’t have a membership if I’m paying for it, etc.. they be getting big mad when they get denied.. like I said lot of cacs be trying to get away without paying membership

I don't see why they're losing their minds..... either come with the person who owns the card, tell them to pick it up for you..... or spend the $50 to save the apparent more than fifty on the item/s that you want..... and use it for other shit the rest of the year... a win/win situation............ not the brightest campers in summer camp :dunno:

Bro, there's a Costco in Inglewood right by the bottoms. Miss me with that whites only shit. Costco goes wherever there is money to be made.
I never said they are white only. I said their client base tends to be well to do aka upperclass . I also said their clientele base is largely white.. that obviously means not all their client is white. They literally have many segments on why Costco is very profitable and their blueprint on success. Been looked up their whole system.. they broke down the tier of Costco, sams club, and bjs and how they are looked at

Also spanish Harlem is not a white area so it’s obvious they have locations not in mostly white areas

.
It’s $60+ tax… $120 for the executive memberships.. it’s easy scheduling might be off.. they not use to hearing no.. whatever they wanted they wanted right there and now and didn’t give a fuck about no membership.. most stores don’t have that policy so they not used to different rules.. or frankly they just don’t care.. whatever their reason I’ve seen some of them have fits

People ain't got $50?

Unless it's your mommas card and you live with her I don't understand the problem.
The problem is, it is a membership/ club discount grocery chain.....

If you let just anyone off the street come in, then you are no longer a membership based business. (Which is the core of their business model)
This has federal tax, city code/regulation, and other red tape "paperwork" ramifications if the word gets out that Costco doesn't care about membership cards anymore.

It seems like a very small issue/hill to die on, but it could lead to millions upon millions in new fees/fines for them

Don't know where you are in Manhattan. But there is a BJs in Da Bronx at Bronx Terminal Market/Mall off of 149th by the bridge. I usually go there with My Sister and Her Boyfriend because they have a Membership Card there (as well as SAM's Club and COSTCO).

I know where bjs at.. it’s a few in the bx.. like to stay in Manhattan when shopping for groceries if I’m not in the whip

The biggest thing also is that membership fees is more than half their total profit gain. Another percentage is their Kirkland brand sales.. finally other products they sell.. they can sell them other non Kirkland products at a lower price with a lower profit margin due to the fact they get so much money from their yearly membership fees.. they also got one of the highest renewal rates.. like a high 90+ percentage automatically renew their membership so they get pretty much guaranteed money each yr. Like I said I peeped various articles/ vids about their whole system and understand why they are so profitable

It's worst than that cause with a membership you get to give someone else a 2nd card under your membership. My mom got my 2nd card and she doesn't live with me. I gave someone else my 2nd Sam's Club membership and she doesn't live in the same city as I do

Exactly, I didnt want to get into all of that, but man Costco was a big deal when it came to Polaris (a high middle-class Columbus suburb) 20 yrs ago!!

Those mfkrs love that place and some of those deals are excellent. So I get it.....fuck it, take your $50 and let me give you more of my damn money.

But I ain't gonna lie, moms used to share the Sam's card back in the day, that pixelated black and white pic on the card....oh and then just smudge the face a little bit more.......mayne that couldn't been anybody, haha

The DC Costco off NY Ave is mostly Black and always busy. Club owners up in there stocking up on Henny and Smirnoff by the cases and industrial carts. Bougie federal employee and law firm negroes from NW buying prime steaks and tiramisu. The average sale is $200+.

I’m not sure where the issue lies. I enter the store and flash my card. Nobody looks at my picture or sees any details. When I check out, I just scan my card on the register. Again, nobody really looks at it. How’s anyone know it’s not my card?

Exactly. Lines long as fuck. I don’t need extra broke ass there with me.
I haven't been to a Costco a half hour past opening time since I started coming, and I know not to go on the weekend..... I'm there half an hour before opening..... then wait ten minutes for the pre-opening line to clear.... go in.... shop my list..... and get out.... can't be driving around twenty minutes for a parking space then parking 1/4 mile away..... that lot is full 45-60 minutes after opening

:itsawrap:

Had to curse out a Costco cashier and get in the manager's ass a few years ago cause of this bullshit. I've had my membership since 2002 and have my wife on my membership. We're in Costco TOGETHER and I show my card while my wife goes to pay for stuff as I put it in the cart. The woman tells her she can't pay it has to be me. I tell her it's my wife she's on the membership. Woman says no then she has to show her card to pay. I start getting loud cause this is the stupidest thing I've heard in awhile.

Manager comes over and the cashier tells him wants up and you can IMMEDIATELY see he's like "Oh no" cause he knows the lack of common sense going on right now. But now I'm not in the mood to let shit go. I have him scan my wife's card and say out loud who's membership is she on....me. So this was a huge waste of time right....yes. And by wasting my time you've also wasted the time of everyone in line behind me.....yes. Also did that cashier ask anyone else in this Costco for both to show their cards.....no.

I wanted to beat everyone's ass.

What’re you talking about? You have to scan a card to check out. I don’t think they care whose card even if it’s a Visa. Who checks the card? But, you can’t just walk up and say I’m with him My wife and both my kids have my card duplicates. Never a problem.

You're missing the point. I scanned my card. When my wife went to pay they tried to say that she can't pay and that only the card holder can pay.
