this shit must have been interesting as hell:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/frank_hughes/02/12/labor.talks/index.html

Hunter said the league is proposing several things the union finds egregious:

1) The league wants to eliminate fully guaranteed contracts.

2) The league wants to reduce the players' percentage of basketball related income from 57 percent to 40 percent once it calculates a formula that introduces expenses into the equation.

3) The league wants to implement a hard cap, which will effectively eliminate the Larry Bird exception, or the ability for teams to go over the cap to re-sign their own players.

4) The league wants players re-signing with their own teams to be able to sign a maximum of four-year contracts, down from six, and everybody else to be able to sign a maximum of three-year contracts, down from five.

5) The league wants players who currently have large contracts to retroactively modify them to fit into the new model.

"We were very clear about our understanding of what the proposal held and that there was not any way we were going to be able to use it as a starting point for future collective bargaining negotiations," Fisher said. "We all agreed in the room that the NBA's proposal could not be used as a starting point."

Hunter said the primary thing the league's proposal achieved was galvanizing the players perhaps before they realized things were getting serious. Boston's All-Star power forward Kevin Garnett hinted at player anger earlier in the day, when the players met with the media.

"It is different from the perspective of what is being presented going forward and us having a new model," Garnett said. "That is what is kind of (maddening). You tend to look and get hit with a cold snowball, if you will, because I have seen it and I have been through it and it is a bit ridiculous, to be honest."

Initially, Stern, his staff and 15 owners were scheduled to meet with the union's negotiating team. But once the players started to realize the severity of the proposal and the repercussions it could have on their futures, a group that included Garnett, James, Wade, Paul Pierce, Johnson, Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, Bosh, Al Horford and Rajon Rondo skipped their league-mandated community service to join the union's leadership group of Fisher, Keyon Dooling, Mason, Maurice Evans, Theo Ratliff and Adonal Foyle.

James apparently spoke in the meeting, as did several other reputable players who expressed anger at the sentiment that ownership was trying to crush the union. Phoenix owner Robert Sarver, San Antonio's Peter Holt and Boston's Wyc Grousbeck were the most vocal members of ownership, according to Mason.

Hunter and several others said the meeting became heated at times, and the All-Stars who planned on staying for only 40 minutes before departing for their obligations ended up staying the entire time.

"I think that they (the owners) maybe underestimated the response, the blowback that they were going to get from the proposal," Hunter said. "Pretty much everything they could think of in the last 15 years was in that proposal."

The league is hoping to fix several elements of the current CBA. The league's top-paid player, Houston's Tracy McGrady, who earns $23 million, has barely played this season. Most of the trade discussions have revolved around teams saving money rather than getting more competitive. Many teams are losing money as their fan base dwindles.

Fisher said players understand that in tough economic times some concessions need to be made by both sides. However, he also said he does not see the players willing to necessarily commit to giving anything up in negotiations.

Ultimately, it seems, the union wants to discuss some form of revenue sharing in which small-market teams would be propped up by larger-market teams which have higher television revenue and gate receipts. That would replicate the NFL's model, which has been largely successful because of enormous television revenue.

Stern and the owners have lost their damn minds if they think the players are gonna go for this. Retroactively allowing your salary to be decreased.:smh: I guess the owners have no issue with a lockout because if they don't come off of some of this bullshit that is what's going to happen.

DUMBASS players.

Who the F**K do they think they are?

Pay lip-service to the greatest economic collapse in US history, while at the same time saying...

DON"T MESS WITH MY CHECKS!

I love it.

The owners hold all the cards because they write the checks.

It seems those NBA players thought they were white. Welcome back to the world of black people.

Wow!!! This is going to get ugly. Looks like Stern and his crew came in playing chess. Players came in looking to play checkers. :smh:

Hopefully this gets worked out before it can lead to a work stoppage. Basketball is by far my favorite sport and without it I would be stuck only watching futbol.

Was Watching The Rookie-Sophomore Game And NBA Gametime Tonight, And David Aldridge Quoted Some Of The Owners From The Meeting, With One Owner Saying "Lebron Can Leave And Go Play Football" ...And "Dwyane Wade Can Go And Be A Model Or Something" :roflmao:

These Owners Don't Give A Fuck Anymore

You obviously didn't understand the article or the situation.

You don't know what the fuck it is you're talking about. Chess?
Let me explain something to you about negotiations and who has the power in this relationship between owners and players.
Players have all the power and have a strong union and smart star players.
Owners are trying to duplicate the nfl ass rape
Owners presented the most impossible plan they could come up with.
They will negotiate to a better starting point- looks like the players arent stupid enough to start that low.

The owners are hurting because recession means less disposable income aka no jersey or tickets for little johnny. Plus they have overpriced tickets and a shitty product thanks to Stern.
They want to shift their losses on to labor.

Don't pity the owners. How many of you can have your city build your place of business for free? I love it when the poor feel kinship with the wealthy.

Yeah and if Dwayne and Lebron bounced and their merchandise and ticket sales dropped further into the toilet they'd be begging like crackheads for them to comeback.

Regardless of how any of us feel about the situation here is the REALITY.

The owners are BILLIONAIRES who can leave the NBA and make money in other industries.

The players are MILLIONAIRES who (for the most part) can ONLY make that type of money by playing ball in the NBA.

Even though the NBA has a STRONG player's union, the owners at the end of the day have the ultimate leverage. The owners have more realistic options than the players do.

The owners initially to the table with the strongest plan possible, and they will negotiate from there.

My predictions:
Guaranteed contracts will stay.... but:
  • Max contract lengths will be shortened
  • Larry Bird Rule will be modified
  • Harder Salary Cap

Tracy McGrady and Gilbert Arenas are this year's poster childs for the owners to reference.

Makk is right. The expansion and greed of the owners fucked the league. They also expanded way to much. If they really want to do something, fold a few of these ass teams and produce a better overall product. :smh:

Them niggas gonna agree to that shit and get out there and play like some the good negras they are cuz they can't afford to hold out as long as them fuckin owners. But the owners know EXACTLY how long the players will hold out before they break because they write the checks. Thas why they makin jokes about Wade can go be a fashion model or whateva...

When the owners dropped this proposal they knew the playas would puff they chest out and complain. But the owners have allready done the math. They know how long the players can hold out if they decide to and they also know in these times a large percentage of the public will look at the players as a bunch of crybaby millionaires.

Owners don't give a fuck. THey got theirs.

This is the best thing that can happen for the "NBA" not the "players. The worst thing about the current NBA is that there is no really incentive for players to play hard every night or/and better themselves during the off season. I've been saying for a long time that the NBA needs to do away with those guaranteed contracts. Guaranteed contracts is what has turned the NBA into a league of athletes that play for the money, not the love of the game.

T-Mac truly could give a fuck about playing. Why would he when dudes is making millions without leaving the comfort of his million dollar home? Whats the incentive?

Players in the NBA have become bigger than the game. If Lebron or anyone else wants to leave and go play in another league...fuck'em! Playing in the NBA should be a privilege. Those players know that they've been hustlin the owners for years. Now the shit is over. Deal with it.

So you're in favor of fucking the hard working guys cause of Tracie Mc Lady?

c'mon man, maybe drop contracts to 4 years or something, but fuck the rest of that.

Ok this story is not 100% accurate.. I know for a fact that Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony did participate in the NBA Cares event. I was there yesterday and I'm sure you'll see them in the commercials..

I agree 100$ That's what makes the NFL so good and why we miss that shit when its over, them players know if they arent cutting it then its a wrap. If you gave me 13 million for 2 years guaranteed, shit I'm chillin. NBA players need this wake up call, the game is nowhere near as good as it used to be and if you disagree then your probably 12 or 13 years old. I'm all for them getting their money, but I want them to earn it, not tweeting from the bench cause they are bored. I was recently in DC and a commercial came on advertising college basketball and the ending tag was "College Basketball, where is a rookie is a freshman, not a millionaire"

My GOD! Right now 57 cents out of every dollar the NBA makes goes to players. They want to cut that to 40??? I always have to side with labor. The owners are going to label the players as "greedy" and "selfish" and try to turn public opinion against them by using the economy.

I don't have a problem with this. The elimination of fully guarantee contracts would likely eliminate players like eric dampier and Q Rich

spoken like a true house niggah :smh:

so anything of value HAS to come from white boys, huh? fuk outta here. it's a bullsheit offer. the league wants the players to help cover the risk of doing business and expenses but don't want to offer them more than what they already get. sheit, at LEAST offer a type of profit sharing in times that aren't lean.

you generating hundreds of millions and xpect anybody to feel sorry for you? fuk those owners. and fuk the players too. ole rich mutha fukas!

((hater-aide tastes best sipped cold....))

kid-drinking-juice-pm-thumb-270x270.jpg

The league will just use other players and market them.
the hard cap is coming. too many nba teams are losing money.
teams like the knicks once they get under the cap will get prized FA everyone knows it b/c its NY and players have ego's about bringing NY back.
Small market teams like the bucks can't compete with that without a cap.
No cap and the knicks under it = yankees of basketball no one wants that to happen.

the contracts will be shortened and not promised too many examples...the T-mac's the Eddy Curry's...the eric dampier's...cats are playing for one big contract then fucking up after they get it. No one goes hard anymore. granted the league with its pussy soft rules make it like this but players have no reason to go hard anymore whether cut or bought out they still get all their money even for half assing it.

the 57 might go down to 48...

the league will win in the end. teams can't keep up with the salaries thats just fact.

Call it what you want but the NFL is has the best product out of all the professional sports.

are you suggesting that the nfl couldnt have a good product without having a weak players union and horrible agreement?

------

on another note it never ceases to amaze me how anti-union some kats around here are. the majority of bgol is the black equivalent of the middle class white GOP
:smh:

as david stern said no way can the agreement remain the same when we are going through a rescission. Ticket sells have been down. Especially in Detroit.

The way it's going look at the Hornets. Has anyone actually seen their locker room as Chris Paul said his high school locker room was better than that.

The Pacers are in trouble financially.

The Nets were lucky some Russian Billionaire purchase the team and is willing to resurrect the franchise because they would have to become the Seattle Supersonics

Memphis is in trouble too. Teams and owners are more worried about staying under the cap than competing. The hornets were trading players for 2016 second round draft picks.

Wonder what would happen if the top free agents in 2010 (Lebron, D wade, Bosh) put out a rumor that they were looking into playing over seas next year. Even though the owners cut the checks, the players bring in the revenue for the checks to be cut.

Must be these southern cats. I swear these people down south view unions as some kind of pagan religion.

Once the players give an inch, it's a done deal.

Also, fuck the NFL. Brothers are getting Alzheimers at 38, but they don't get guaranteed money? GTFOH with that slave mentality. If the shit is so easy, let the old ass white owners play the game, while the "lazy, shiftless Negroes and rednecks" run the front office.

I do not believe that incluudes merchandise. Players get zero percent of jersey sales etc....

The NBA isn't worry as Charles Barkley said these players are now playing for legacy and going over seas doesn't help your legacy sure Josh is making money but people forgot about him.

They go over seas and all of sudden stats and numbers aren't the same. Plus the one thing they want is the rings.

Now wade already has one but wants more.

But if this ever do happen the NBA would do what they always do make some good players in to "Superstar"

They would begin to push the likes of Roy,Paul,Gay and others good players as their superstars.

(Jason Richardson anyone?)

The owners will get their piece of the pie, but a lockout hurt the owners too. Most Owners are NOT billionaires, they are millionaires who own a business. Owners have more debt than the players too. Those teams arent paid for with their cash, they have payments to make to, they have leasing deals with arenas... They need revenue coming in to make those payments and a lockout hurts the owners too. The owners are also are not united. You have the same ole haves vs havenots that are gonna fracture the owners like it always has. You are right in that most teams dont turn a profit, its more of a hobby. They do have other ventures, some have other teams they own. But dont think that the owners have all the cards in these negotiations, they have shit to lose too.

not just them though - alot of dudes who think weak unions make for better competition
word the nfl players are so fuckin scared of getting hurt and not getting all they can in their avg 2 season careers they wont even look after retired players the right way
what's even worse is that every one of these leagues is run by whites with a predominately black workforce - PROOF POSITIVE OF RACISM AND THAT THE OWNERS ARE RACISTS yet these coons will pick the owner's side every time. :smh:

Ouch.

I think the owners overestimate the amount of leverage they truly have. The hard stance, take it or leave it bullshit wont go very far. The NBA isnt like football. Average fans are loyal to players not teams. Nor does the NBA have a devoted following of gambling viewers thats as big as the devoted following of actual fan viewers of the game itself. They have a much larger revenue stream that isnt dependent on actual game quality or player notoriety. The NBA is a superstar driven league and product.
