It took 40 and two years to find it – but there is no doubt Jamaican dancehall artist Cutty Ranks found his big hit “Dame Tu Cosita”.

In just three years the song has amassed more than three billion views on YouTube.

Dame Tu Cosita is Spanish, which means “give me your little thing”.

In the song, Cutty Ranks repeats the phrase over and over, and just like that the YouTube views keep coming again and again.

At the last check the song, posted on 5 April 2018, had 3 478 868 797 (Nearly 3,5 billion views).

Last year the song was the second most viewed on YouTube.

The 56-year-old Jamaican artist began his career as a reggae artist at the age of 11 with local sound systems.

Cutty Ranks, whose first job after school was as a butcher, recorded two major albums The Stopper (Fashion) and Lethal Weapon (Penthouse) before the big hit came along.

Cutty Ranks has collaborations with other top Jamaican artists including Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths of the I Threes fame.

His parents named him Philip Thomas, but for more than four decades fans have known him as Cutty Ranks – the one who lyrically chops off opponents “limb by limb” in the dancehall.

As Jamaicans say “the older the moon the brighter it shines”.

Older and wiser, Cutty Ranks can sit back and enjoy the rewards of decades of work that are now paying off in abundance.

0ne billion views on YouTube can earn about US$8 million (R119 million).

In 2018, Cutty Ranks’ vocals were featured on El Chombo’s reggaeton song “Dame Tu Cosita”, originally released in 1997.

I fucking KNEW it was that beat! I’m soooo sick of that damn beat. How do Latinos/Hispanics go to clubs; it’s the same damn beat!!!

Latinos / Hispanics love all that boring one beat music.... they'll dance to shit like that all night.... :o

....I'm just happy Cutty Ranks got a nice pay day out of it...
Even worse when you point out that it's the same damn beat/bassline on every song, they try to rebuttal saying the same thing applies for dancehall reggae

fucking kids don't know shit....

Is "Ranks" some generic name or is he related to Shabba?
Generically, it means dope, good, etc. You can describe stuff. But, only old heads still use this.

sidebar: how the fuck is Shabba's net worth only $1 milllion

Shabba Ranks Net Worth | Celebrity Net Worth
First, most of those Celebrity Net Worth sites are BS. Secondly, many artists from Jamaica, akin to the black artists in the U.S. (especially back in the day) did not have great contracts. Additionally, dancehall and Reggae music gets bootleged so bad. In the U.S., no one really buys an entire reggae album, only the single, if they do that. I remember getting maxi-singles that would have 5 or 6 different songs using the same riddim.

All I can say is that when you have an assignment in the middle of nowhere involving large groups of caucasians and their music turn on Spanish radio and listen to that one beat while you're driving home. I bet your volume control ends up all the way to the right and a big smile hits your face when you pull into the driveway.

Best of all, if you don't know Spanish the commercials are nowhere near is annoying as English radio.

Are you kidding? House snap and trap music always had same go to beat. We should know how to program that drum pattern from the Fisher Price set.

Edit: that's him? Hehe. I thought that was the reggae ton chitin circuit with Playero, Ken & Rakim, Alberto Stylee, Mexicano and Daddy Yankee. Congrats!

Yes Ranks is a generic name, a lot of artist have that name.
Shabba was ripped off by his producers and manager but I can't confirm his net worth.
He still do shows and charged a hefty fee from what I heard.

Shabba is quite fine financially

Dancehall artistes like Cutty and Shabba make a lot of their bread by doing dubplates and performing at dances & sound clash events.... that's mainly cash in hand which never gets declared... so there is 'net worth' and and then there is 'real worth', therefore what the tax man don't know wont hurt him.
