Covering African American Issues, Is Cnn Becoming Our New "B.E.T. News"?

I have been watching CNN for years. In the last year or so they have been covering in depth alot issues that black people are concerned about. For example: the coverage of Jena 6 march, the James Brown funeral and special, Katrina in depth coverage, bringing national attention of the missing Chicago woman and others. They have a program called "Out In the Open" that sometimes exposes racism and injustice. On top of that CNN have a number of black news anchors. Kind of like what the canceled B.E.T. Nightly News use to be.

I am not here being a cheerleader for CNN, but in the absence of our own news program i think they are doing a pretty good job covering our issues. What do you all think or your opinions?

BET is far more interested in generating income than it is in reflecting the
reality of black life in America. Usually I would say so what? What company
isnt interested in making the most money it can? But we dont have CNN or
FOX or MSNBC or NBC or ABC or CBS, etc. BET is all we have. And for BET
to turn its back on covering the Jena 6 issue in order to run an old episode
of Jaime Foxx from 1998 is unforgivable to me.

I've noticed that to b/c I stopped watching CNN b/c they talk about celebrities, Iraq, and politics like the rest of the news programs. I got tired of seeing Paris Hilton and Anne Nicole just about everyday. I think they are HQ in ATL and the ATL has a large black population so I guess they are finally reflecting the culture of the city. I think black issues are a big topic(ratings) now b/c even black people want change within our communities and we are speaking out.

BUT THEY CAN GENERATE INCOME AND STILL SHOW NEWS PROGRAMS AND OTHERS SHOWS CONCERNING BLACK ISSUES. BUT UNFORTUATELY THE POWERS THAT BE AT B.E.T. DON'T WANT THIS. THEY WANT US DUMB AND BLIND.:smh:
WHEN I WATCH B.ET. YEARS AGO I USE TO LOOK FORWARD IN WATCHING THE B.E.T NIGHTLY NEW AFTER WATCHING MUSIC VIDEOS AND COMIC VIEW. IT BROUGHT A SINCE OF BALANCE TO THE STATION. MUCH LIKE HOW SOME SPANISH STATIONS SHOW TALK SHOWS, VIDEOS, AND SOAPS ALL DAY BUT ALSO HAVE NEWS AND CONSCIOUS PROGRAMING THAT REFLECT AND EDUCATE THEIR COMMUNITY.

MAN, I MISS "TEEN SUMMIT" THAT CAME ON SATURDAY MORNING, I GREW UP ON THAT SHIT.

BET nightly news was a good program. I saw the light skinned woman that used to be on BET nightly news covering something on CBS (which Viacom owns of course). The BET news was very educational and informative b/c it covered black issues and the part I liked the most was the financial segment. We need to know more about managing our money and investing. Now they have shows like "Hell Date." :smh::smh:

black news and issues should should be covered on CNN, it's a part of national also. In fact it should be covered more.

Black news should also be covered by BET and Radio One. Last week was a crime to have to go to CNN for coverage of the Jena 6 rally. These stations should be our first options for coverage of black events like Jena, not CNN.

Black people are not in control of BET and when they were, they didn't give a shit about our isses. At least the years before it was sold.

Speaking for myself, It's waaay to early to endorse one segment of CNN as our defacto standard bearer when it comes to news where we are conserned. BET is an entertainment model. They did offer some news and community service segments in the past but BET was and is about entertainment.

Whites own it now and they have hired people with faces like ours to do what whites feel most confortable with us doing. Shuckin, jivin', skinnin', grinnin' and much of the rap community have responded giving them what they feel comfortable selling in our communities.

CNN is no different.

Also speaking for myself, CNN has NOT been a friend to us in the past and they will use whatever method they can to get us to watch. Up to and including selling us a prospective they feel comfortable with so we would only use them as our black news providers. Call me a cynic. I am.

In this media, the message board, at least we can exchange ideas and points of view. But in media where they talk and we can't talk back? That's too much power over my ability to make a decision. I would have never known the detail on Jena if not for BGOL. I never got it from CNN or FoxNews.

That's my opinion. Give em time to prove themselves. 3 years is long enough to make a decision. If that segment is around that long.
