Colin Cowherd Says Michael Jordan Would Be Criticized A Lot More If He Played In Today's Era: "History Would Be Much More Favorable To LeBron... You Could Have A Lot Of Flaws In The 90s."

"History would be much more favorable to LeBron. Not that he'll be criticized, but he would be far less criticized if he played when Jordan did and Jordan played now, Jordan would be pummeled... Michael is he was kind of fortunate. You could have a lot of flaws in the 90s. Am I wrong on that?"
The advent of social media and many more opinion shows on sports media than ever before mean that the stars of today are subject to more scrutiny than ever before. It does make sense that if MJ was being analyzed game by game, then he would have caught a lot more hate than he did at the time.

However, to suggest that MJ wasn't criticized harshly at the time is also false, the constant discussions about him being a selfish player and his gambling persisted throughout his entire career.

It's always impossible to compare players across eras in the NBA, and it gets even more difficult when talking about the GOAT conversation. Whatever Cowherd may say though, until James wins 6 championships, it's unlikely that the majority would change their mind on the debate.

Man, the what if game is the butterfly effect. There is absolutely no way to discern whether Michael Jordan would have taken one misstep and would have ended up like Len bias or Sebastian Telfair

Jordan was Jordan. He came at the right place in time for his talents.

We can all say maybe this or maybe that. There is absolutely no way to tell

If you want to play that game, go right ahead. There are literally infinite answers. Go nuts

I think there would have been waaay more scrutiny on his social stances or lack thereof. And his take of "republicans buy sneakers too" would have set black social media OFF BIG TIME.

His gambling and the fact that the NBA turned a blind eye to that shit wouldn't have been so easy to duck.

His first retirement and the circumstances and rumors surrounding it would have been waaay more scrutinized.

OORR you can STAY THE FUCK OUT THE THREAD? how you try that for a few weeks and see how it works out?
I blocked that piece of shit. There are some people who I don't even want to bother with even knowing they exist on this board. It's only when one of you quotes them that I even remember, "You ninjas still breathing? Fucking roaches."

Block him. He's not worth the comment. And then he can Howl at the Moon all he wants and you can't see it. Like you know he's going to do with my response

Y’all niggas still don’t get why Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan. 90’s Mike and social media Mke would’ve been the same.

Fuck them kids.
Republicans buy shoes too

AKA, he didn’t give a fuck what people think then and still don’t give a fuck what people think now. Lebron wants to be liked.

LeBron James Has 1 foot in the suburbs and one foot in the hood.

Mike would’ve had a lot of problems with the media.

- Every morning talk show would’ve debated if Mike’s harsh style with his teammates was good for basketball.

-All those years he lost in the 80s would’ve been memed, short clipped, and criticized heavily.

- Lastly, his gambling problems would’ve been the talk of the world.

All in all, none of that shit would matter to Mike because he would’ve assassinated folks on the court.

Mike wants to be liked to..you don't become a face of a global brand if you don't care whether people like you or not. He just can't take criticism. And even tho he got some of it in the analog days...that was nowhere near as fast, intense and constant as the digital era and when you throw WOKE shit in there...o_Oo_Oo_O Mike today couldn't be nearly as flippant and dismissive as he was back then. The ONLY reason he doesn't get shit today is because while Mike the icon is still popular...Mike the person is old and irrelevant.

Jordan unleashed violence on the court.. for every Twitter finger there would be a undeserving victim on the court.. opponent screaming Mike what did I do, mj would reply it’s not about you it’s about what all my haters227 on ig said

Nope.

and Tupac too.

However MAYBE with wise consul they would have hired an agency to control all that

ESPECIALLY Jordan I could see studying Jeter.

Yeah, cats like Jordan defy time and space. They will ALWAYS be how they will be. Don't matter location on the planet nor the time period. Lebron is great, but different in that he is more political. Not dem/gop political, just he will do things to be liked.

Mike don't give a fuck nor will he pretend to give a fuck. Social media wouldn't stop him. He don't want to fuck with people any fucking way. He just wants all of us out his way. The money was just a side effect to his drive.

I disagree

His father passing, his divorce, his cheating, gambling...

In a social media deep fake tmz clout chasing cancel culture?

Woo boy.

Murder anybody family member and let’s see if they gonna play the following yr? That’s not social media that’s real life… look at lebron son you think if his son didn’t make it he would play next yr? Nah instant retirement and going into a sunken place.. has nothing to do with social media

Stupid question
No one ask how any top athlete prior to espn would’ve faired in 24/7 media coverage of cable TV. Imagine Jerry West having to worry about leading 6pm sport center in dam near house hold in America.

Every era has its own pros and cons

You are not understanding my point

The op question was about media scrutiny

This current society is trash bro.

There is no longer real journalism

The respect and restraint Jordan received

ESPECIALLY because of Stern

wouldn't be there.

And even WITH THAT people still gossiping etc

in 2023 the internet social media and public would be sh*t.

Two COMPLETELY different circumstances dude....

Lebron is damn near 40 and is clearly at the end of his career. His goal at this point is to play with son in the league....if that doesn't happen then yeah he'd be done.

Jordan was at the PEAK of his career and just coming off a 3peat with no reason to not expect a 4th title.... "retiring" after his fathers murder was pretty curious. I'm retiring from a sport I excel at because I no longer have the drive and focus to compete at a high level.....then takes up another sport where drive and focus are required to compete at a high level.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

So far it seems that the retirement was just an excuse to either avoid or ride out a suspension the league had given him for the gambling issue.

But the OTHER part of that scenario is Jordans gambling addictions and unsavory associations because of it would have drawn MUCH more attention in this age.

People take off from sports for personal reasons all the time.. 1 of the golden state warriors took off for personal reasons last yr.. so nothing curious about him retiring from the nba.. nba season starts in end of oct/nov.. preseason and practice b4 than.. his father got killed months prior.. baseball season started in April of the next yr.. he had way more time to get into baseball than bball.. 6 months difference to be exact… so when the yr ended and a few months into the next yr maybe he was motivated to play a sport again

What? You think he will fold? Some cats just ain't built like that.

It's no secret I'm a LBJ guy over MJ, but when it comes to that coldness? That IDGAF? That fuck what everyone thinks? MJ is miles ahead. Yeah, he'd have to check his gambling, but all that other shit wouldn't matter to him. I think he'd just be way more careful with his gambling.

Kobe was maniacal about his and still didn't have MJs lack of fucks to give.

MJ would probably be treating the media like Marshawn.

You remember Marvin Harrison? Yeah, the killer who played with Peyton? Same shit. Some cats just built like that. Some want to be liked. Types that are already rich, tweet, and apologize. :smh:

Since we're at it:

How wild would Adrien Broner get in an era with no social media? Would he have been champ? Better than Ali?

That about sums up the wackiness of this thread.
