According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, former world champion Ricardo Mayorga has been added to the list of potential challengers to WBA junior middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto, who is slated to return on March 12. Mayorga joins Pawel Wolak, and Vanes Martirosyan, as the three frontrunners for the spot. The fight is going to be a Top Rank pay-per-view event with the MGM Grand in Las Vegas playing host.

Apparently out of the running are Rigoburto Alvarez (26-2, 19 knockouts), of Mexico, and, IBF junior middleweight king Cornelius Bundrage (30-4, 18 KOs), of Detroit.

"We're looking at three opponents now. Pawel Wolak, Vanes Martirosyan and Ricardo Mayorga," said Arum. "It will be whomever we can make the best deal with. The fight will be on pay per view in Las Vegas at the MGM."

Mayorga: After I Handle Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao is Next!

By Ryan Burton

Ricardo Mayorga, fresh off his knockout of Michael Walker, arrived back in Nicaragua yesterday to a mob of fans and reporters. Mayorga told reporters that before he left the United States (the Walker fight took place on the Solis-Austin undercard in Miami, FL) he had signed a contract to take on WBA super welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. "I signed a contract to fight Cotto. I am no longer fighting (Felix) Sturm. After that Pacquiao better be ready because I am coming for him."

A source close to Top Rank, who promote Cotto, advised BoxingScene.com that no contract has been signed, and discussions are ongoing with Mayorga, and the other two potential opponents, Pawel Wolak and Vanes Martirosyan.

Mayorga insinuated that he will have the proper hunger and motivation needed to be in the type of shape needed to face a fighter the caliber of Miguel Cotto. When a reporter asked the outspoken Nicaraguan if he thinks he has what it takes to defeat the 3 division Puerto Rican champion Mayorga said without hesitation - "Of course I can beat him. Yes I did feel fat and not in the best shape (for this past fight) but with Cotto it will be different."

Mayorga was accompanied by his lawyer, Carlos Mario Pena, who said they spoke to the President of Nicaragua shortly after the victory over Walker. "President Daniel Ortega spoke to Mayorga after the fight with Walker. He said that if Mayorga beats Cotto that he wants him to bring the Pacquiao fight to Nicaragua."

Cotto is scheduled to return to the ring at the MGM Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on March 12th.

These niggas dug up Mayorga and you know what? I won't be shocked if after Cotto put those things on him.... they do put Mayorga in the ring with Manny at that ridiculous 148 catchweight.

That would kill boxing. No hyperbole. That would murder boxing. All the inroads boxing has made to get back on the top rung of sports with baseball, football, and basketball, will be completely undone.

Mayorga? I swear if someone asked me who Cotto might fight next and gave me 100 guesses, I wouldn't have said Ricardo Mayorga.

I thought the De La Hoya beating and Mosley knockout had sent this this dude into permanent obscurity.

No, No.... I can see it now.

They will comeback and talk about how Mayorga beat Forest. Then they will make the case for the fights legitimacy because he is closer to Manny's size and is well known...

You know, the stuff that is more important than skill.

No Mayweather, No Marquez, shit probably even no Berto...

This crap here!!! It is almost too funny to be upset with.... Mayorga's highlight fight on HBO will be in black and white! Didn't he just make a failed attempt to fight MMA? I guess Cotto is tired of taking all these tough fights, and after fighting Foreman got a taste of what it's like to eat light and said hell with it... I'm make a career out of it like Manny!!! These Dude's are going to mess around and put on one of these bogus fights, and end up getting Knocked the Hell out!!!

Cotto's Adviser: Mayorga Would Make Interesting Hype

By Lem Satterfield

Gabriel Penagaricano, the legal adviser for WBA junior middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto, believes Ricardo Mayorga would make for an interesting opponent. Cotto is scheduled to return on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayorga (29-7-1, 22 KOs) is among those being considered by Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum, to face Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs), along with New Jersey's Pawel Wolak (28-1, 18 KOs) and, unbeaten Armenian-born prospect Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17), of Glendale, Calif.

Mayorga, a former champion at 147 and 154, is well known for his wild pre-fight antics. Penagaricano feels Mayorga is a good fighter who will create a very interesting promotion with his wild nature.

"It's still a bit early because we are just starting to talk about the different economic options for each fight," said Penagaricano to David Castro of Fanaticos [FanHouse Espanol]. "I hope we do have a resolution soon. Of course, there are bigger fights out there, but we are discussing different options [with Bob Arum,]. He's brought this fight to our attention because it would make for an interesting promotion."

"Ricardo Mayorga is still a very good fighter. He has been inactive, but he had a great fight with Fernando Vargas not that long ago."

I'm obligated to root for him because he's Nicaraguan, but Cotto's always been one of my favorite fighters in recent years.

Alexis Arguello he is not though.

:lol::lol::lol:

That fight was in 2007!!!

I can't believe this shit...I know that the 2nd Sat. in March is a prime date for boxing matches, but this is ridiculous...The only thing good that will come out of this is the promotion...I expect Mayorga to pull a B-Hop move and demean the Puerto Rican flag...other than that it won't look pretty...Cotto will NOT let this fight turn into a slugfest...or else that will be his last fight...

Former champion Ricardo Mayorga is ready for his challenge of Miguel Cotto. The hard talker from Nicaragua is already starting with the verbal bombs. He faces Cotto for the WBA junior middleweight title on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayorga says the location won't matter. He's open to fighting Cotto anywhere, including Puerto Rico. He made a recent ring return earlier this month and stopped Michael Walker in nine rounds.

"Everyone knows that Cotto is from Puerto Rico. Cotto is nobody to me. I don't fear anyone. I'm willing to go to Puerto Rico to fight Cotto. I learned a lot in [my time off]. I do not think my time off has affected me. In fact, it's helped me," Mayorga was quoted by Carlos Gonzalez.

If Mayorga is able to upset Cotto, he wants a shot at Manny Pacquiao's WBC title at 154-pounds.

"I want to fight at 154 pounds....Cotto, Pacquiao. I can beat the Filipino. I'm ready. Pacquiao gave Antonio Margarito a chance, so he can do the same for me," Mayorga said.

Gabriel Peñagarícano, legal adviser to WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, said the strong name value of Ricardo Mayorga was the deciding factor in selecting him over unbeaten contender Vanes Martirosyan. Mayorga, Vanes and Polish boxer Pawel Wolak were the three fighters under review for Cotto's ring return on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Team Cotto felt Vanes would be a tougher sell on pay-per-view. Mayorga has already completed his side of the deal. Peñagaricano says negotiations have not been finalized on Cotto's end but he expects to wrap things up by the end of this week.

"Mayorga has a stronger name than the Armenian Vanes Martirosyan. He was one of the candidates and he's the strongest of them. We took a break this week for the Christmas activities, but we should be resuming the negotiations [this week]," Peñagaricano told Carlos Rosario.

Peñagaricano says Cotto will receive a substantial purse for the fight and a good percentage of the money generated from pay-per-view.

"We do not comment on the economic aspects. This is a pay-per-view event that generate income and there are safeguards," Peñagaricano said.

Oh when it comes to Rob...I mean Bob Arum, you know that he was going to make the fight that would get the most buzz...He sure doesn't make great high-profile matchups very often...

Wait. This is a ppv? Aww c'mon!!!!!

I wouldn't pay for this fight if it were $19.95 they are crazy as dog shit if they feel this is gonna be a BIG PPV event GTFOH wit dat BULLSHIT!

Does Arum think Cotto is a draw because we know Mayorga isn't. He'll be lucky to pull 150k for this fight and most of those will be in NY and PR (more NY than PR).

Miguel Cotto: I Guarantee That Mayorga Will Be Left Beaten

By Lem Satterfield

WBA junior welterweight king Miguel Cotto in not concerned with trash talking nature of former champion Ricardo Mayorga. Their fight is scheduled for March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayorga has often tested the patience of his opponents, including Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Shane Mosley, Vernon Forrest and Felix Trinidad.

"Mayorga has shown on a few different occasions, that most of what he says and does is outside of the ring, and inside [the ring] he's left beaten by his opponents. I guarantee that this will be the next occasion [where Mayorga gets left beaten],"
Cotto told Fanaticos [FanHouse Espanol]. (No Duh)

If Cotto beats Mayorga in March, then a rematch with Antonio Margarito is a good possibility for June.
:smh: Margarito stopped Cotto in the eleventh round of their 2008 battle in Las Vegas.

"These are things that are in the pipeline, but there is nothing concrete yet," Cotto said. "As always, I'm looking to face the big names and get wins. That's what we look for as fighters."
