New York (CNN Business)Costco this week raised its starting wage for hourly store workers in the United States for the second time this year as businesses hike pay to draw and retain workers amid a labor shortage.
Costco (COST) told employees last week that it would increase its minimum wage from $16 an hour to $17 starting on Monday. Costco has around 180,000 US employees, and 90% of them work hourly. Costco's new starting wage puts the chain— which has among the lowest turnover rates in the retail industry— $2 per hour above Amazon (AMZN), Target (TGT) and other top retailers' minimum wage, and $5 an hour above Walmart's (WMT).
Costco's latest pay bump comes as many retailers, restaurants and other service sector employers raise pay, offer signing bonuses and sweeten their benefits packages in response to struggles hiring workers.

Costco raised its minimum wage to $14 in 2018 and $15 in 2019. In February, the Issaquah, Washington-based company hiked it to $16 an hour. Business Insider first reported its most recent increase.

"These increases are part of Costco's continuing efforts to ensure our hourly wages remain extremely competitive in the retail industry," Costco CEO Craig Jelinek said in a memo to employees.
There is pressure on companies to raise wages as they compete for labor. Average hourly pay for retail workers increased 3.8% in September from the same time last year, according to the latest data from the Labor Department.

mazon (AMZN), Target (TGT), Best Buy (BBY) and others have raised their starting wages to $15 an hour in recent years. Amazon said in April that it's increasing hourly pay between $0.50 and $3 for 500,000 employees.
Walmart (WMT) raised its minimum wage from $11 to $12 last month, while CVS (CVS) and Walgreens (WBA) said in August they would increasing starting pay to $15 an hour.
Wages in September across the private sector grew 4.6% from a year earlier.

Lmaoooo a few weeks ago I was at Burlington coat factory and I saw a help wanted sign on a screen.. they was offering a $500 signing bonus if you worked for 3 months.. I was like damn these retailers are really trying to pull out all the tricks to get employees

One dollar… one dollar ☝
But to the people it's meant to attract, it looks good. They don't think about what real inflation is, purchasing power, etc. If folks knew how much a raise they should be getting each year to keep up, they'd be rioting in the streets. :smh:

This is how we got from households being able to have 2 cars, nice homes, and vacations on the pay of one high school grad to homes needing 2 people working just to be check-to-check.

Well, consumerism is the American way, but that doesn't change the FACTS.

Outside of specific trades, what person can float an entire household with a middle class life with just a high school education? That includes 2 new kias in the fucking driveway.

Come on man. We all know the stats. How the government changed CPI many times to keep up with their fuckery they portray. How the credit card boom in the 80s helped mask the eroding middle class.

That mcmansion, BMW shit is just the 'fake make it' crowd. I'm just talking people middle class with the homemaker shit that was the norm.

so go get a damn education
All u need is 60 credits to be a cop, fire fighter and other civil servant jobs. You dont even need the damn diploma
Why do you expect to be able to live a middle class life on a high school diploma and no extra hustle or drive?

You're missing the point. All I said was these bullshit raises don't keep up with inflation and purchasing power going down. That's it. Simple as that. And I am right.

We have entire political careers based on fighting this shit but they don't address the real problem. That the government lies about inflation and purchasing power.

Yeah, I agree people have to take their lives in their own hands. But in 20 years, people will need to do even more to keep up with inflation and the erosion of purchasing power. Just look at the last year. While some of us have done well with markets, the average person has lost big time with inflation/purchasing power. How many people have got 15 percent raises the last year? Educated or otherwise.

Ok

If they got regular 9-5 hrs that’s 31,200 a yr to 33,150 a yr… basically an extra 1,950 a yr.. that’s a couple extra bills you could pay.. couple extra accessories you can buy.. another vacation.. some extra money to flip.. nothing to some people but something to another group
You divide that by taxes, works out to a little over $25 a week.

When I was growing up.... a lot of these jobs that a lot are trying to live off of weren't that type of job..... they were side shits you did while in college...... now people are trying to live off of them..... I got lucky.... was going to take a break out of high school and then go to college.... I worked a little then ended up going to the fire department...... just a high school diploma...... now they're starting to want the applicants to have some college... to me, you're getting enough with me risking my life for 24hrs every four days.... never knowing if this could be the day/fire that your ticket gets punched... :hmm:

That’s the shit that a lot of people don’t want to hear these days. Wanting $15 an hour for a job meant for youth

Back in '05 I was working at a dying Circuit City. There was a Costco being built nearby...... 6 mfkrs left. They were paying $15/hr back then....maybe cuz the former coworkers had experience.......

Tax man says different and that's the sad shit about min wage pay it might go up but so does the amount of taxes they take out. :smh:
Nah man.... don't believe the hype... talk to an accountant.... that ain't enough of a raise to bump you into another tax bracket.... you need waaaay more than that for it to happen

It’s Costco not construction.. that money is good for 18-25 crowd.. recent high school graduate, college student, recently graduate looking to make some bread until he get a major job, a person who just got out of prison and need a quick job during probation period.. a side gig, something you get if you recently lost job, a person who has certain disabilities, a person that needs some kind of front for another not so legal money, a temp job to get some flipping money…. Welfare recipients, people who suffered substance abuse and other shit…. It covers certain demographics

The oligarchs plan is for all of us to be selling shit to each other from stores that are part of international conglomerates that they own, and to siphon off as much off the top as they can. In this new economy, Costco is a class act, but they’re still part of the mess.
