Numerous Complaints from Neighbors

After the shooting, a neighbor contacted WYFF News 4 about Lane. The neighbor said they had videos of Lane heading to his car at the Huntington Downs Apartment Complex on the morning the officer was shot. Watch that video below:

The neighbor also shared a video from Jan. 1 that showed Lane walking around the Huntington Downs Apartment Complex, armed with a gun. She said this is the same day he banged on a door to an apartment at the complex and threatened to shoot everyone up.

The neighbor told WYFF News 4 that Lane had made shooting threats in the past several weeks, including toward police. The person who contacted WYFF News 4 said the threats had been reported to authorities.

When asked about these reports, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office told WYFF News 4 the following:

"The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was familiar with David Lane after receiving multiple complaints from neighbors on January 1 and January 2 regarding concerning comments and behavior. Deputies responded to and investigated each complaint and determined that while the comments and behavior were concerning, they did not warrant criminal warrants for an arrest. Out of an abundance of caution, administration at the Huntington Downs Apartment Complex coordinated with the GCSO to provide off-duty deputy security to help ensure the safety of residents. That security detail began on January 8."

"Every time he would talk to me and tell me how his neighbors were stalking him and how he would, you know, hold a gun to the wall or the door in case his neighbors tried to break in or something," said Anthony Oglesby, Lane's former coworker.

Another coworker said that a while back, Lane sent him a video of a gun out of the blue.

"He has several weapons. Two years ago. He was basically bragging to me about the gun that he just got or just purchased and how, has a speed loader. And it was just a video that he sent me randomly," said Brian Frank, another former coworker.

Lane's Financial Situation

We learned Lane's apartment complex filed to Lane to vacate his unit on Dec. 4, meaning they were terminating his lease. The judgment was supposed to come down Monday, Jan. 12.

Frank told us Lane's bank account was in the negatives.

"And he asked me to borrow $1,500. And I said, David, I don't have that kind of money. But he, they definitely seemed desperate. And desperate people do desperate things."

One neighbor who did not want to go on camera says they were afraid that after Lane shot the officer, he was coming back to shoot neighbors. He was on Roper Mountain Road, the road Huntington Downs is on, when deputies spotted and chased him Sunday morning.

Neighbors and coworkers tell us it was just a matter of time.

"I knew that he had mental issues, and it didn't come as a surprise that he did that. Truthfully, it wasn't a shock," Anthony said.

The incident in Greenville County is the second officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026.

This is the first officer-involved shooting for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office in 2026.

In 2025, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office had seven officer-involved shootings in 2025.
