For becoming the all time hits leader among Shortstops. Just passed Luis Aparicio yesterday. Congrats to Da Hustla;

The 'ultimate' team player! A most diserving player. His current play will put to rest--at least temporarily--suggestions at moving away from shortstop to positions elsewhere,i.e., outfield, 2nd, or 1st (Cano's recent 'hot' streak put that suggestion to rest, and Teixiera's presence at 1st ice's that concept). Jeter stated firmly, "I will always be a shortstop"!
While he has 'lost' a step (Derek is age35), he is still quite capable at that position. However, Father Time has a way of humbling all of us, eventually. It just isn't Derek's time.

There was a time when a 200-hit season was automatic for Jeter, but injuries have slowed him in recent seasons. While he currently has 153-hits, an additional 47-hits are not out of reach. Doing so will allow him to each a familiar plateau...another 200-hit season.

His record 2677 hits sent pass HOF'er Luis "Little Luie" Aparcio, while closing in on Yankee legend & HOF'er, Lou Gehrig (2721). Derek needs another 35 to pass Lou Gehrig. He'll probably pass Gehrig this season, elevating himself to #52 in MLB. He is 'Mr. Yankee', in modern times.

CONGRATULATIONS Derek Jeter!!

Derek needs another 35 to pass Lou Gehrig.

Find it absolutely amazing (and not in a Met way) that in the long, storied history of the NY Yankees, that NOT ONE of the parade of Hall of Famers has 3000 hits. Gehrig would've probably gotten 3000 if he hadn't tragically passed away, but not even DiMaggio or Mantle could do it??

I agree. You know, some of their players lost time (3-4 yrs) to War II...especially Joe D. Jeter should exceed 3000. Tonight he got three more hits, although the A's beat them, 3-0.

The magic number is now 32.

Little-known facts:

Babe Ruth played 22-yrs., ten (6 w/Boston) of which were devoted to pitching (94-46; 2.28 ERA).The remaining yrs. were devoted to the outfield. He accumulated 2873 hits, including 3-200-hit seasons and 1-199 hit season. Had he not pitch he likely would have gotten 3000+ hits.

Yogi Berra played 19-yrs. Career shortened by WW II. He accumulated 2150 hits, w/no 200 hit seasons.

Joe Di played only 13-seasons but amassed an amazing total of 2214-hits, including 2-200 hit seasons. Again, a career interupted by WW II.

Lou Gehrig played 17 yrs., amassing 2721 hits, which included EIGHT-200 hit seasons. As you know, his career was shortened by premature death,at age 38.

Mickey Mantle played 18-years, but never a complete season during that time. He acumulated a career 2415-hits.

It never occurred to me that the team never had a member of the 3000-hit club, until you mentioned it. A fact stranger than fiction.

Was gonna mention Phil Rizzuto as well, but then I see he passed away yesterday. SO forget about it.

RIP Scooter

Jeter is one of my all-time favorites, as a player.
Jeter is one of my all-time hated players; he's a yankee.
