Computer Buying Question: i-5, i-3, core 2 duo, or turion 64/Acer or Gateway???

I'm in the process of getting a new laptop and I want to budget for something $800 to $700 and below. Here are a few choices I was looking at. (Most are either Acer or Gateway)

And I was wondering if anyone had any insight on the benefit of the core i series vs duo cores? Any suggestions would be very useful.

Also, I'm not sure how many of you know this, but Bing has a program called Bing Cashback which gives you percentages off from a ton of sites. They include Best Buy, New Egg, and Tiger Direct to name a few.

In addition, since I do not download much, here are some of my favorite xvideos scenes. These are choice cuts:

hp dv7 series laptop give you a lot for the money....

While I did see some DV7's, I would never buy fucking HP anything again if I can for two reasons.

A) They dicked me on a Compaq laptop I purchased several years ago. I remember spending hours on the phone with non-English speaking Indian tech support, to not get shit fixed and eventually having to come out of pocket.

B) But then I didn't learn my lesson of course and decided to buy the HP Tx1000. That was the biggest nightmare I have ever had with a computer. Tech support was terrible and the shit systematically died on me. The motherboard used to get so hot, I couldn't leave it on tables (160 F). I have an expensive brick now. And I'm not alone, this is a product that HP shamelessly refuses to recall despite the fact that thousands of people have complained.. Google tx1000, just speaking about it makes me angry. FUCK HP!!!

But thanks for the suggestion.

Post the full specs on each and I'll tell you which one I would choose.

Any input would be appreciated....

I almost agreed with you there Mistah Mafioso, however if you clicked the O.P.'s link you'd go to the website's page, anyways based on the overall specs & your budget I'd go with this system RE: Acer Aspire AS5740-6491 LX.PM902.130 Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-430M 2.26GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Blue The laptop is fully equipped, you've got both HDMI out as well as VGA, so plugging in the laptop to any monitor/TV should be easy as pie, also the laptop has 128MB dedicated Video Card memory which leaves the rest of your 4G.B. ram for your computer, the hard drive size is good also, but you stated earlier that you don't download movies. I'm not certain if you're looking at using the laptop strictly for personal use, but if you do decide to do some business with it it should be good as well, it has all connectivity options, the weight may be a lil off at 6.16lbs, but 4 hours of battery life is extremely good, hope my explanation is good enough for you !

Checkout Office Depot, I bought a Toshiba that I'm really happy with for under $600. They usually have a fair selection.

That's weird. A few months ago, my boy picked up an HP from Craigslist with what turned out to be a MB problem. Called it in with the serial and talked with the same Indian guy for about 20 minutes. They sent a box to ship it and in a week he had it back and didn't come off one quarter. Working like new money.

On the question, look at that i5.

i had the same issue with HP and my 2 HP laptops. they get hot as hell, non english CS, and the motherboards suck. i too have an expensive dv series brick. the new asus is the shit though

I just added a Gateway at the bottom. It seems Acer and Gateway are offering the best deals right now on loaded i-5 computers. If it came down to it, which company would be better to make the purchase from?

If memory serves me right Gateway Computers was brought by ACER.

Acer owns Gateway and Gateway owns eMachines so essentially they are all the same damn thing. Truthfully, I think most of laptops use the same got damn parts anyways. Shit if you're going for that Acer you might as well cop that eMachines - model eME725-4520 laptop $298 on http://www.mycheaptech.net. They look practically the same, I think it has a gig more memory and more storage though.

I got a desktop that runs like a champ, but wanted a cheap laptop. I copped this shit in store for less than $320 with tax and this shit runs like a champ. Get yourself a warranty on it and you're good.

acer is the best pick nowadays

the put out some low rate ish, but u can easily upgrade for few $

and they actually live up to their warranty, they giving 3 yrs on most they ish and they actually stand behind it! AMAZING!!!

thanks a hell of a lot for the input everyone. im prob gonna cop that first acer since they are all pretty much on the same level.

Here's some info I got from a post on Amazon about the difference between i-3 and i-5 cores:

CPU - The short version is that the i-5 outperforms the older "Core2" chips and is slightly better than the (also) new "Core i3" chips. As noted in the description it's 2.26GHz part that can "Turbo Boost" up to 2.53GHz. What isn't mentioned is that this is a dual core part with 3MB of cache. That may sound a lot like the old Core2 chips but don't be fooled: this chip will outperform the old Core2 by 20%-50%.

If you are trying to decide between the "Core i5" and "Core i3" I would recommend the Core i5 to gamers and people who run high end applications (like CAD software) and the Core i3 for people running business applications (like MS Office) and web browsing. If you want to know more read on. If nerd stuff bores you then just trust me, this is a great chip to have in your laptop.

Okay here is why the Core i5 is a big deal: The Core i5 (and Core i3) have Intel's newest, fastest and smallest CPU core (also known as the "Westmere" core) which is two generations newer than the "Penryn" core used in the Core2 line. Because with each generation the parts get smaller they get cheaper to make.

Also with the Westmere core Intel has bundled the chipset and a new graphics chip onto one package which also reduces cost (and allows Intel to do some new and cool performance tricks). One thing the Core i3 and i5 have that Core2 does not is "hyperthreading." Hyperthreading is a feature that makes two CPUs act like four. To do this Intel has enabled each CPU core to act on two software threads at once. So the two CPU Core i5 is almost as good as a four CPU part for a lot less money and requiring a lot less power (there are a few four core mobile CPUs out there but the battery life is terrible and I don't recommend them).

Hyperthreading is something that every user can benefit from: no more watching your computer slow to a crawl because your anti-virus kicked in. Windows 7 just dumps that off on a new thread and you keep humming along surfing the web or playing a game. The main difference between the Core i3 and i5 is that the Core i5 has "Turboboost" (which can speed up your CPU or the graphics chip as needed) and the Core i3 does not. If you aren't stressing the CPU or the graphics chip then the Turboboost found in the i5 isn't going to do a lot for you.

I'm actually looking at copping this Gateway this weekend...

gateway-nv7915u_large.jpg

Gateway NV7915u

Key Specs
Processor: 2.13GHz Intel Core i3-330M
Memory: 4GB RAM
Storage: 500GB hard drive
Optical Drive: DVD±RW
Screen: 17.3 inches (1,600x900 native resolution)
Graphics: Integrated Intel GMA HD
Weight: 7.4 pounds
Dimensions (HWD): 1.5x16x11 inches
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

The 17" screen for its price was more the issue than the processor, which is i3. I would love the i5. But can't afford it right now.

I plan on building my own desktop sometime this year.

The crazy thing is if you look close enough you will find great specs for a great deal. Check out Gateways huge list of laptops, they offer a ton.

You said you were looking for an i-5 17in, or just the i-5? Either way I found this for $679.99 doing a quick search:

DAMN BRUH,

I was JUST eyeing that one.

I don't think the memory's expandable on it though. The Gateway NV7915u can go up to 8GB. I'm trying to figure out if the option of more memory would be better than spending the extra $80 or so on a higher processor on a rig with no expandable memory option.

Maybe you can help me with that one.

Expandable memory option or higher processor speed?

I recently bought the ACER 5740-6378 and I love it. Here's why:

Memory size: 4gb:yes:
Memory type: DDR3:yes:
Display: 15.6 inches:)
Processor: intel core i5:D

All for $599 at Costco.

If you can find a laptop with these type stats for less than $700 you can feel good about buying it.

I wouldn't have any of the brands mentioned in this thread so far on my shopping list. Oh wait, somebody did mention Asus. They're pretty new to the laptop game, but they make solid motherboards, and that's the backbone to any computer. If the warranty period is over and a part of that goes out on a laptop you might as well chuck it. Anything that isn't soldered to it can be replaced.

The nicest thing that I see to your price range:

You can only take advantage of the more than 4gb, if you have a 64 bit operating system. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and money, not to mention, when will you ever use more than 4gb of ram? If you're going for a high end gaming rig, or CAD, or Photoshop, but just for everyday use, go for the faster processor more than ram.
