Four months after his satirical approach to news coverage aired, D.L. Hughley's CNN show, "D.L. Hughley Breaks the News" is going off the air. Initial reports cited an unnamed inside source close to CNN who said the show was being canceled due to "budgetary constraints."

After its initial run, the show was panned by Advertising Age and other critics, some of which compared the successful comedian to Flava Flav. And while both the current economic climate and the initial reception to the show didn't help, CNN states neither played a part in canceling the show.

"D.L. approached CNN about being permanently based in Los Angeles, where his family lives," CNN representatives stated via press release. "To accommodate this, we agreed upon a new role where he will be a contributor for the network based in Los Angeles. We are eager to continue our relationship with D.L. who is a tremendous talent and a valued colleague."

After only five months of breaking the news, the comedian D. L. Hughley’s CNN show is concluding at the end of March. “D. L. Hughley Breaks the News” was billed as a Saturday night talk show tied to the week’s news. It averaged 750,000 viewers and was taped in front of a studio audience in New York.

In a statement on Thursday, CNN said Mr. Hughley, above, wanted to be permanently based in California to be closer to his family. “To accommodate this, we agreed upon a new role where he will be a contributor for the network based in Los Angeles,” the network said. CNN isn’t leaving the comedic news business entirely: its international channels will continue to play hourlong recaps of “The Daily Show,” the Comedy Central news satire, each weekend.

I saw this coming. My roommate the other day commented on how whack the show was to her. We both thought so. I actually like D.L. I hope he rebounds.
