‘A beatdown for the ages’: Inglewood High’s 106-0 football victory draws jeers

In high school football, the talent gap between future pros and average Joes can be quite wide indeed, and lopsided scores are nothing new.

But a 106-0 win? That will draw some attention, and after this weekend’s game between Inglewood High School and Morningside High School in Inglewood, many eyes in the sports world are on the City of Champions.

Despite scoring 59 points in the first quarter alone, Inglewood High head coach Mil’Von James declined to play backups and was initially reticent to use a running clock to shorten the game, according to Morningside football coach Brian Collins.

Inglewood High even went for a two-point conversion pass, instead of the traditional one-point kick attempt, after scoring to take a triple-digit lead, which Collins told the Los Angeles Times was “a classless move.”

“I told them, ‘Go play St. John Bosco and Mater Dei,'” Collins said in reference to two of the area’s powerhouse high schools that recently produced the starting quarterbacks at top-tier programs Clemson University and the University of Alabama.

James has also been criticized for allowing quarterback Justyn Martin, a blue-chip prospect and UCLA commit, to play when the game was well out of reach. He threw 13 touchdowns.

James has not responded to an email seeking comment on the game.

In a statement provided to the Times’ Eric Sondheimer, the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section, which governs most Southern California high school sports, said the 106-0 score “does not represent” the organization’s ideals of character.

“The CIF-SS condemns, in the strongest terms, results such as these,” the statement read.

Other high school coaches were similarly incensed. Matt Poston, head coach at Tesoro High School in Las Flores, said he hoped he was “reading this wrong” when he looked at the score.

“We’re supposed to be teaching young men life lessons through the game. What message was this staff teaching last night? Sad,” Poston wrote.

The national sports media is also weighing in. Legendary basketball sportscaster Dick Vitale took to Twitter to call James “SICKENING & a DISGRACE to the Title of COACH!” for the beatdown.

“Congrats on teaching good sportsmanship,” Vitale wrote sarcastically. “U SHOULD BE FIRED!”

Sportswriter Nick Harris highlighted some of the most eye-popping stats, calling the game “a beatdown for the ages.”

While 106-0 is a score rarely seen at any level of football, it’s not the largest margin of victory.

The most lopsided football score of all time is widely considered to be Georgia Tech’s 222-0 win over Cumberland in 1916, when Cumberland had discontinued its football program but was forced to play the game, putting together a squad of fraternity brothers and other students.

See this is why I had to get out of coaching, because I don't give a fuck about sportsmanship! Summer of '93, I had a bomb ass 13-15 year old squad. Just know my C, PF, and SF all could dunk, no ringers either. We went from Harlem to play a game in Webster PJs, bad move. Well shit was getting out of hand, ton of oops, a lot of Mark Jackson shimmying, loud obnoxious laughter, and a 40 pint blow out by the end of the 3rd period.

Well niggas started throwing glass bottles at our huddle, then my niggas started throwing the chairs from the sideline, and a fucking melee broke out. We were only 20 deep and had to let off a few shots after so we could duck out in the pickup trucks. We was thinking about going back up there later that night to make it super spooky for them niggas. Well I learned that day, if we want to do niggas like that, we need to do it on our home turf Milbank on 118th Street.

As far as I'm concerned, I feel that the refs should have called the game.

If a player touches the field, his job is to play his ass off. A coaches job is to coach his players, and to out coach the other coach. It's the referees job to manage the game, and to keep order. Refs are the ultimate authorities in the game.

Plus, the other coach could have threw in the towel. Everyone is on edge about the coaches... Get on the authorities who are supposed to be running the damn game.

Don’t be mad at the coach be mad at that shitty team that couldn’t play defense..they wouldn’t scored that much if they knew how to play… I’m suppose to apologize for my talents fuck outta here.. this ain’t Apollo kids where everybody is a winner..this real life… in real life some people will achieve greatness and some people will fail.. ask yourself do you want to be on that side of failure again, if not play better

If there isn't a rule against it then what's the problem, there have been major blow out game over the years and there was never any mercy rule put in place so why cry about it now.

Name the last nfl/college team that dropped 100 points?.. or how often does 100 points in a football game on any level happen?.. in order to score 100 points in a game has to have some type of talent…or that other team really has to suck

Dude Deion sanders even had bad games and got scorched by jerry rice.. so off that 1 game would I think Deion was garbage?.. sometimes somebody or a team can be extra talented or just have a great day or great game or the opponent could just have a shitty day

What does it teach them kids? Answer: don’t be at the bottom. It’s no different then the Air Force using a drone to drop a bomb on the head of a Somali who lives in a hut. When it comes to the military the States are lapping everybody.

Drone strikes in Somali

It's not my job to take it easy on anyone or get my players to think that it's okay to half ass it

I might put the backups in, but I'm going to try to score. Oh best believe it. I'm playing situational football. So, there may be a time later in the season where a two-point conversion is necessary. This is practice for that.

You don't like it, stop me. But don't show me any Unwritten rules and expect me to obey them. No

I blame those hoe ass referees, they should've ended this, i remember when Clemson was beating the shit out of SC State a few years back
At the start of the 3rd quarter the refs told both coaches they wouldn't stop the clock so the game would end faster...
