Darnell R. Scott, 37, reportedly stabbed his unnamed relative, 50, as many as 25 times before he partially disemboweled his body

An Englewood man stabbed his brother-in-law at least 25 times on a CTA bus, partially disemboweling him in front of other riders, prosecutors said Saturday.

A judge denied bail for Darnell R. Scott, 37, who is accused of stabbing his 50-year-old brother-in-law numerous times with a 2-inch pocket knife as the two rode the No. 63/63rd Street bus Thursday around 6:30 p.m. The victim suffered numerous wounds to his abdomen, arms, legs, neck and the back of his head before the bus came to a stop in the 300 block of West 63rd Street, according to Cook County prosecutors and police.

The attack left the man partially disemboweled, Assistant State's Attorney Craig Taczy told the court, as Scott, his right hand heavily bandaged, listened. Scott, of the first block of West 65th Street, is charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm and is scheduled to return to court next week.

The incident began with Scott getting on the bus and walking to the rear, past his brother-in-law, without saying a word, Taczy said. Despite being related by marriage, the men do not share a friendly relationship and hadn't spoken for some time, Taczy said.

The brother-in-law approached Scott and the men got into a fight that ended with Scott punching the older man, authorities said. While prosecutors didn't say what triggered the blow, Scott's arrest report states the brother-in-law told police later he was hit after he asked the younger man if he had previously sent people to “jump him.”

As the two men wrestled on the bus floor, Scott pulled the knife and stabbed the victim, according to Taczy, as some passengers recorded video on their cellphones. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, according to the police report. Scott, who was arrested after getting off the bus, was also hospitalized for his injuries. Officers also found the gray-handled knife and took it into evidence, and say Scott admitted stabbing the victim.

Cook County Judge John F. Lyke Jr. noted that it was the brother-in-law who approached Scott on the bus, but denied bail after prosecutors reiterated that Scott threw the first punch. Scott was also ordered to have no contact with the victim.

Scott, a married father of three, will be able to seek a reduced bond at his next hearing, the judge ruled.

I live in Chicago. Not surprised crazy shit like that happened on the 63rd street bus line. Especially in that Englewood area the bus line serves. Hannibal Lecter would avoid riding that bus.
