Back when I was coming up, if you and your homeboy was selling drugs and he got knocked and told on you for a lesser sentence, that's snitching. I agree with your definition on snitching, but
when was Ms.Johnson not harmed if she decided to cooperate with law enforcement? The act of cooperating with law enforcement isn't without risk. Fear of being killed/harmed is the main reason criminals are able commit violent acts in certain neighborhoods. Civilians aren't going to testify in court and feel that criminals aren't going to attempt to hurt them or their family.
To me, the fear of retaliation is the real reason the no snitching mindset exists even with criminals. Most aren't not snitching because their morals are so high. The everyday citizen doesn't believe police or courts will be able to protect them from criminals.
Apparently, snitching on dead people is frowned upon. People would rather their loved ones stay in person for 30 years instead of telling on someone who is already dead and coming home. In my opinion, it's easy to talk shit while you are living your life on the outside and safe compared to living in prison. Whatever your reason I understand not snitching on the living but not snitching on the dead makes no sense.
