YONKERS - Boston Celtics star Sebastian Telfair was arrested early today after police said a loaded handgun was found in his car when he was stopped for speeding on the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers.

Telfair, 21, who gave police addresses in White Plains and his native Brooklyn, was stopped shortly before 4 a.m. on the northbound Bronx River Parkway when police said his 2006 Land Rover was clocked going 77 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone.

Police said Telfair, who was driving, produced a Florida driver's license that had been suspended. Westchester County Police Officer Adrian Camacho subsequently found a loaded .45-caliber handgun under the front passenger seat, Westchester County police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.

Telfair and a passenger in the car, Al Eden Fuentes, 28, of Queens, were both charged with second-degree possession of a weapon, a felony. Telfair was also hit with a misdemeanor charge of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and issued summonses accusing him of speeding and driving without a license, violations.

"He was very polite and cooperative with our officer,'' O'Leary said of Telfair, who along with Fuentes was being held by county police.

Both men are expected to be arraigned later today in Yonkers City Court.

Telfair, a cousin of New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury, was the 13th pick in the 2004 NBA draft and played for the Portland Trail Blazers until being traded to the Celtics last year.

In February 2006, while still with the Trail Blazers, he was questioned, but not charged, after a handgun registered to his girlfriend was found in his pillowcase aboard the team's plane at Boston's Logan International Airport. He was later suspended for two days and fined by the Trail Blazers.

In October 2006, Telfair reported that a $50,000 chain was snatched from his neck while he was outside of Justin's, a Manhattan restaurant owned by hip-hop mogul P.Diddy. That incident occurred shortly after rapper Fabolous was shot outside the same night club. Telfair was questioned about the shooting but said he was not there when it happened. He was unable to identify the men who stole his chain.

Reached shortly before noon, Celtics spokeswoman Erica Hunt said that at this time the team would have no comment about Telfair's latest brush with the law. The NBA also had no comment.

Re: Celtics G

not related to the story, but i can't help but comment on the celtics' backcourt situation.

they LOADED themselves up with backcourt players in anticipation of the allen iverson trade last summer. but when danny ainge couldn't close the deal, the celtics found themselves STUCK with too many guards.

AT THE TIME, i thought to myself, well, it may not be ideal, but it's certainly not the worst situation for a team to be deep in backcourt talent.

BUT THEN I ACTUALLY WATCHED THEM PLAY. :(

good lord. ALL THOSE GUARDS (in all, 6 or 7 players on the celtics roster could line up in the backcourt) and not a one in the whole bunch is decent trade bait.

Whenever I see Bassy, I think that he should have went to college.

There's no telling how nasty this guy would've been had he
took 4 years to hone his craft at the college level. At a good
program like G-Town or Carolina. But he went for the fast money,
now the money about to run out (if it hasn't already) and he's
barely 21

If he doesn't hit next season, he will be in the NBDL soon.
The initial contract with the signing bonus is up. The next one
might be for peanuts

It's not that he can't play, he just got Steph disease...he can
pass...and he can shoot...but he can't pass AND shoot. Not good
when they are trying to phase brothas (especially city cats)
out the game anyway

Man, Telfair's shot has been inconsistent his entire career. He can score from the position (I guess that is what you meant)

But your assessment of his game before still holds true today. He can pass and score but he can't pass AND score or in other words he has those skills but cant apply them at the same time. He also doesnt understand "time and score", when to run the offensive set to get a good look or create a shot on his own. He has no idea when to take the jumper (that most teams give him) or penetrate and pitch to an open shooter on the wing.

I hope he gets it together soon because I'd hate to see him out of the league because he couldnt get his life or game together.

Honestly, he needed to go to a schol AWAY from all that. G-Town or any other big name school wouldn't work for him because he'd be on that Marcus Vick-type bullshit.

Had he gone to a school in the middle of nowhere, like Iowa State or even OSU or Kansas he could have concentrated on his game.

All the faults in his game mentioned above would have been addressed by coaches at the collegiate level.. especially at a top school with a good coach. What most of these kids lack the most is good decision making skills..on and off the court..and it translated into behavior off the court like this with the gun charges and on the court wiht the inability to know when to shoot and when to pass etc..
