Carlos Santana Collapsed On Stage Tonight...Medical Issue

How many of us have collapsed at work because we didn't drink enough water?

If it did happen would your boss say "don't worry, you're only human." Or would they rightly point out that neglecting your health short changed the clients and threatened the livelihood of the entire crew?

Santana has been performing for well over 50 years. He knows you need to be hydrated to do a good show. So why didn't he do it?

Nobody goes to a concert to see their heroes die in front of them. Now that's going to be on everyone's mind when they're deciding whether or not to buy a ticket to a Santana show.

He ruined the experience of his fans and did untold damage to his brand. All because he didn't drink enough water. No excuse for that.
Wtf is this extreme ass take? First off, who is gonna fault the man for NOT drinking water? You make it seem like he’s the second coming of R. Kelly and won’t sell any more shows. He was dehydrated and passed out. It happens. Yes, folks were inconvenienced, but it was an isolated incident and I’m sure every single person that purchased a ticket and witnessed this wished him well. People will show up to his next shows and listen to his music because this is not the norm you’re making it out to be.

Secondly, I once had a coworker who passed out on the job for the very same reason and wasn’t reprimanded or chastised in the slightest. Boss gave her the day off and told her to hydrate and get better. Came back the next day and it was business as usual.

I mean seriously, what coal mine are you crushing big rocks into little rock’s at where nobody would understand a very human incident occurring?

Agreed. Always have to be careful with hydration. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are no joke. I remember having to “coach” someone at work to actually drink water. It was always milk, OJ, or instant coffee. Never water. They were older and battled cancer in their final 2 yrs. Often wondered how dehydrated they were since coffee’s a diuretic and all to boot.
Man I see so many people around me guzzling alcohol and coffee all day long. Both robbing the body of essential hydration at every turn. It’s wild to see.

I drink no alcohol, and whilst I am a strong coffee drinker, I switched to decaf years ago which makes it it a non issue. It’s just Water, Gatorade and Pedialyte to keep the trifecta of sodium, magnesium and potassium in check at all times, and if I’m playing ball, all three of these get turned up a notch.

There’s truly no substitute for hydration.

get his Abraxas record, his best work in on there

Let me tell you about heat strokes that I had no idea before getting one.

1- You don't feel thirsty or too hot before it happens.

2- You ever get light-headed for a sec only to shake it off, well it feels the exact same way, the only difference is instead of being able to shake it off it, instead, it immediately gets worse.

3- If you don't sit your ass down right away, you could die. In my case, I was bike riding very leisurely during my first bike ride for the season, I felt lightheaded while riding, but instead of trying to man up and fight through it, as I would normally do, something told me this was different. Thank god I stopped because I believe I would have passed out and most likely die in the middle of an empty park.

4- To me, the biggest cause was drinking coffee before working out while forgetting to properly hydrate, something I did a million times, but never again since then.

5- You would never see it coming. If you were to ask me five minutes before if I was OK I would have responded hell yeah.

I'm a DJ just like you.

So you know as well as I do that not finishing a show means that somebody's wedding, birthday party, or Friday night gets ruined. It also means that your reputation gets destroyed the moment your back hits the floor.

In Santana's case it's even worse because he has dozens of people who are relying on his performances to feed their families.

That's the reality of being an entertainer. When you agree to do a show you do whatever it takes to make sure that the show happens. This isn't the 9:00 to 5:00 job where you can clock out early or take a sick day.

Obviously this isn't R Kelly bad and Santana will still get shows of one kind or another because he's a guitar god. But this was still a pretty big fuck up. The kind that might make sponsors pull out and insurance companies hesitant to underwrite future shows.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Thankfully neither you or anyone else got seriously hurt.

That said, you weren't engaged in a profession or activity where heat stroke is all that common. If it was you would have been better prepared.

Santana on the other hand has spent the last 50+ years in a profession where heat stroke happens all the time. In fact, it's so common that performers often use it as an excuse to cover for more serious issues.

I don't think that's what happened here, but it is still a rookie mistake for someone who should have known better..

Bro, we’re no name DJ’s… he’s Carlos .. Fucking .. Santana.

Yes, all reputations would get destroyed in a heartbeat because we don’t matter, and it would be career suicide, but him? He’s built up a solid reputation over 50 years of music and is a guitar legend, that nobody would blink, nor should they when something doesn’t go correctly. Reputations ALWAYS precede people and he’s no different. He’s not known for doing this, or allowing anyone to starve. In fact, I believe she’s a benefactor and philanthropist off stage, so any monies owed/lost/recouped shouldn’t be an issue with him.
To this day, Lauryn Hill is known as a serially late artist, and STILL sells out shows with that rep hanging over her head. Santana will be MORE than alright here.

You’re taking an isolated incident and applying it to an entire body of work and that’s extremely disingenuous.

I would be genuinely shocked and surprised if any insurance company or sponsor in their right mind, would pull out over an isolated incident like this. There’s simply too much money at stake and the name is way too huge to allow a human error, something that 99.99% of people would understand, screw up any potential chance to make more money.

If he does this 5 more times, we can revisit the idea but as it stands, it’s an overreaction at best.

No, I wasn't engaged in anything professionally but the thing is at the time I didn't think I did anything out of the ordinary or certainly something that could have placed my life in jeaopody. The way I see it (and I really started thinking about it after Kevin Samuels died) that there is a thin line between being alive and dying, and as far as we know we could have all been within an eyelash of dying without knowing, thinking it was just heartburn, being a little lightheaded or just not feeling right, but being that it only lasted a few minutes think nothing of it.
My point is Santana could have done something he did a million times before and gotten away with it, only for some reason, bite him in the ass that day.
So yeah no one is perfect but sometimes during moments like this, if you are lucky to walk away alive, it can give you a wake-up call to take things more seriously, even the benign activities that you've done a million times before.
Be safe out there....

He hasn't spent the last 50 years as a 70-year-old man though. He could've just misjudged what his body is capable of doing at his age. Even athletes, who're likely more aware of their body's limitations than most people are, can misjudge their capabilities as they age.

This wasn't some diva shit that ruined the show but a health emergency. I can't blame the man for that.

Nah...

He's an OG...and you have no idea what's even in his rider...or his medical condition...

He has nothing to be embarrassed about and this does absolutely nothing negative to his brand...

He doesn't owe anyone shit...

Venues/Promoters are insured/bonded for many reasons...refunds are their responsibility not his...

It's incredibly silly comparing your level work to his
